Skills weren't always there, but could never question his commitment to the Swans each and every game he played for us. Had the hard edge, too, that we seem to lack in spades. A few of the current playing list could take tips.

The only thing Zac Jones had was an amazing ability to kick it straight to the opposing side. Bloke was a bust

Hey Lad, first time listener, first time caller. Rugby league guy here but trying to get more into Aussie Rules. As a NSW resident figured the Swans were the best team for me so you might find me lurking and asking questions trying to figure out the game and the team. Any good resources you could recommend to learn more of the rules and such?

I have a pretty basic knowledge but happily watch some videos or listen to some podcasts to get a grip on the league in general and also the team.

I’d suggest the opposite to Kiama Chris. First thing to do is to go and watch a game live. If you want to pick up the vibe of the crowd, get a seat at ground level. If you want to watch what’s actually happening on the ground, try to get a seat up in the stands, preferably on a wing. If you can find someone to take you who can explain what’s happening, great. But even if you can’t, you’ll get a sense of the shape and flow of a game by watching it live. You can’t get that on TV until you’ve seen it live.

I went to my first game with a group that was a mix of fellow debutants and theatre goers. Didn’t understand what was happening but fell in love with the sport all the same. Once I was hooked, the learning part came naturally.

Welcome!

My suggestion:

(1) go to a game live. You’ll get the feel for it quickly.

(2) If a Collingwood supporter boos, the umpire is correct.

(3) If a Bulldogs supporter boos, the umpires haven’t been paid their “brown paper bag money” that week.

(4) If a GWS supporter boos …. you’re hallucinating. There are no GWS supporters. Seek medical attention.

(5) The bloke wearing no.12 for the Swans is going to win the Brownlow Medal. Several times.

(6) The pissed bloke doing a shocking Elaine dance in the aisles will be caesar88. Do not be alarmed, he’s a ubiquitous fixture.

McKirdy article on match sim now up;

There was a real focus on “taking the sting out of the game” from the defence of the main side, as Dane Rampe, Lewis Melican and Nick Blakey attempted to slow down the pace of the play.

Tom McCartin had some nice moments ahead of the ball as he develops his forward craft. His best involvements came when he could outmuscle his opponent, with the 25-year-old still getting his head around some of the leading patterns for his teammates.

There were a few push and shoves as well apparently and McKirdy noted;
Defensive physicality is clearly king for the Swans in 2025, and it will be fascinating to see what sort of impact it has on their fortunes.

McKirdy's 3 players who stood out;
Will Green, Blakey and Jordon (as a 'pure' midfielder).

Just some observations;
Melican IMO is right up there as one of our most important players.
Always been a fan, but so cruelled by injury.
Really hope he can be' the man' down back.

Like the seeming focus on physicality.

There's been a fair debate about who should/will be another small fwd this season.
I've been a long term advocate for Corey.
Speed,toughness, determination, although McKirdy did note Corey wasted some opportunities.

When he joined us Jordon was praised by Longmire for his midfield craft in the pre-season.
During the season he got pigeon-holed as a tagger.
I think he offers more.

And lastly huge call out to McKirdy (and I'll say it quietly to News Corp).
Great to have a dedicated Sydney based AFL reporter.
Shame the AFL administration hasn't followed suit.

The two sides were split relatively close to seniors and reserves as Dean Cox begins to formulate his preferred combination. Isaac Heeney, James Rowbottom and Chad Warner started alongside Will Green for one side at the first centre bounce, with the quartet up against captain Callum Mills, James Jordon, Angus Sheldrick and Peter Ladhams.

Chad got a mention for a six bounce running goal from HB.

From the first two major match simulations, it’s clear that Lewis Melican has adopted the role of the backline leader with Dane Rampe and Nick Blakey working alongside him. Melican was incredibly vocal communicating with his teammates, demanding them to fill gaps and marshalling them to great effect.

He was on SEN and typical he rates GWS higher with more variety , i reckon he's 65/35 to them

We simply can not run a key defender unit of Melican, Rampe and Blakey.

I am huge fans of all of them but that won't cut it. You can take all the contested marks in the front half that you like but it won't mean a thing if our defence isn't elite.
I still think the TMac thing is simply as a back up, or an in case we need him there he's at least prepared option.

I don't disagree however the article did mention that basically we rotated pretty much all our defensive tall back-ups (Hamling, Francis, Andrew & Snell, with Edwards still recovering from an infected leg) through both teams.

McKirdy notes, Francis took some strong grabs, particularly when the wet conditions set in.

So at this point in time it looks like we are persevering with the Tom fwd experiment and seeing who, if anybody, can step up down back in his absence.

One thing that im really happy about this season is the growth of the younger midfielder/small forwards.

Arguably our weakest area of the side so great to here a lot of positives out of Cleary, Campbell, Shelrick and Co Warner.

Hoping that we do end up having 2 of Cleary Campbell Co Warner Hanily partnering Papley as a small forward in our best 22.

I just haven't particularly loved what I've seen of Francis at AFL level (although to his credit, I've never thought him detrimental to our senior back-line when he's played there. He seems to slot in from a group perspective without much fuss.)

Edwards & Snell I'm extremely bullish about, but neither have played an AFL game yet.

Hamling's form-line is such an unknown given where he's at in his career.

I look at any of them and I don't see the options to help make our defence elite this year, which I think is integral to pretty much every premiership campaign in memory. Not that McCartin isn't imperfect himself, but I think he is our best chance at achieving that elite defence, just based on his size, experience in the role, and chemistry with Melican & Rampe which was (at times) on display last year.

I thought maybe it was just a pre-season experiment as you & Adnico have said; I know Clarkson used to train defenders forward and forwards in defence a lot in pre-season (I'd have liked to see him try that on Buddy!) But we're nearly in Feb now and I'm starting to think... it's happening for real.

Makes me a bit nervous.

Cox's interview on RSN this morning (from 5 min mark) pretty much explains what's going on.

Francis in defence as a key is ordinary

Even Rampe is cooked

Blakey plays loose and soft af times , gf see

That defence will struggle

GF winning sides are normally built from defence
Very well could be the case. Another issue linked to that is the midfield preventing numerous quality entries for the opposition. How often do teams waltz out of the centre bounce against us? Or like in the GF, find numerous options in the corridor unopposed?

If the mids can stop the ball movement, then that would help our undersized defence big-time.
