Problem is that we haven't got much smaller in all honest

Basically replaced Arnold Reid and McAndrew with Andrew and Podmore-Taylor and wouldn't be surprised if there are other VFL listed players that are taller like didn't we have Will Kelly last year (a 194cm winger?)?
I guess the difference is with less AFL listed talls, we're not forced to play with an overly tall, unbalanced lineup. Podmore, being VFL listed, only plays if needed whereas McAndrew this year played if fit, even if Ladhams, Green, Buller and Reid were selected.

I reckon there is a bit of Stephens in some of them. Some are just not up for AFL with all of its demands. That is why you have a VFL. It weeds out the weeds and grows the grasses. That is life.

Blaming players being played out of position as a reason why players don't come on is IMO just chatter.
Those players that are AFL quality will find a way.
You're miscontextualizing what I was saying. I never said that players being played out of position is the reason they don't work out. I acknowledged that it very well could be that they simply aren't good enough. But if a player is not showing much, the only way to guarantee they fail is by doing nothing with them, or not trying anything at all. I think we owe it to ourselves and our senior depth to actually try everything we can to get something out of these players. If after all of it, they still haven't shown much, well fine, at least we could delist them knowing we'd tried our best to make them work. It's better than just deciding they're a bust because they struggled in the first position given to them and then being happy with them just being list-cloggers for the next two years. That is literally a waste of everyone's time, and a list spot.

Would it kill you to post a link - like you so often ask others to do?
Even though it was posted in the previous years thread, ill just add it to here

Swans VFL 2024: senior AFL listed players playing uninspiring footy, often in weird roles, younger players not really developing, no effective forward line, NEAFL players not really up to VFL standard, topped off with some baffling coaching.

What’ll change this year?

Probably not much.

I just hope we see something to get excited about in the VFL ranks this year. Like Snell emerging as a legitimate AFL option, or Will Green developing rapidly.

Because 2024 was a tough watch.

For the stats-inclined... this website called VFL stats, they have basic stats for the league (kicks, handballs, contested possessions, disposals, marks, tackles, hitouts, goals, behinds)

However on this website, it offers far more stats for the VFL, including disposal efficiency, inside 50s, rebound 50s, contested possession rate, intercept possessions, clearances, contested marks, score involvements and tackles inside 50.

For those who may struggle with the website, follow these instructions:

1. Under where it says Highlight column, select 'team' from the drop-down menu.
2. Check the boxes for the statistic categories you want to show in the table. (I personally just checked them all.)
3. Scroll down to the table and find the white bar that says 'search' under team and type in "Syd". This should bring up Swans players only.
4. Select each stat in the purple bar at the top of the table to see the rankings for that particular stat.

Hopefully I haven't confused anyone even more with those instructions.

DFS Australia is also starting to log VFL stats for season averages as well

Also on player profiles you can select games to find "limited" averaged stats like FP TOG etc

Great tips caesar88 . Can we pin this to the top of the thread somewhere? I'm sure I'll want to delve into this during the season and it's going to be a bugger to find your post about where to go and what to do.

Will Hamish be running around with us in the VFL again?

Admittedly I found much of last season unwatchable but thought he was one of our more reliable players when involved. Far less prone to fundamental errors and brain-fades than many of our listed boys.

I don't know. I will be travelling up to NSW over Christmas and New Year and catching up with family including Hamish. He is a great decision maker. He rarely does much wrong. He can tackle having played rugby union in his junior days. IMO he lacks pace. But he has pace between his ears. They have played him everywhere including on ball.

His dad was a champion RU player until he did his knee badly when he was about 23. He then went onto coach two Sydney RU sides including Randwick. He also was a selector for an Australian U19 RU side that beat the All Blacks for the first time in NZ.

Hamish gets a few BOGs at UNSWES from time to time throughout the year.

He probably just falls short at a shot at AFL. If he had the pace of Cunningham I reckon he would get a gig.

Thanks for that

Good call

I cannot imagine that Pointy won't be a better and more consistent coach. Be interesting to see what, if any, impact Kennedy has.

How will you know ?
It will be difficult until you see enough games to see patterns.

Macca:
1) consistency in position selection
2) a forward line that acts like one
3) something that looks like a game plan
4) running games out
5) decent level of pressure

Kennedy much harder to tell:
1) Newbies playing with confidence and intent
2) Seeing him spending time with the players on the sidelines discussing things
3) hearing players mention his help

A few years ago at a NEAFL game Laidler and Perrin were coaching and I overheard a conversation they had about McInerney. It was just a few words, simple but excellent coaching, and I think had a big impact on his play to this day. I know plenty don't rate Laidler but I do.
