I think it's a fair path to take, makes sense, but paying so much on the bench is really hurtful to the team. You basically end up with a premo less. I reckon I'll stick with mostly cheapies on the bench. Happy to take 1 or 2 expensive players on the bench if they're required, but no more.
You can also end up with an extra premo at the end of year or the ‘A’ graders compared to those who are buying out of the bargain bin. Happens every year as everyone is so eager to get to full premo before everyone else that they cut corners which bites them in the butt at seasons end.

Last year I shopped in the bargain bin, ended up with trades left and a stacked bench, which allowed me to avoid donuts late in the year and claw my way back after a terrible start to the season (my starting side was garbage). Others ran out of trades early because they spent all their money and trades getting the top-tier and very expensive players. It's SC, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

I've never had a problem with cash gen starting with mostly cheap rookies, and that's coming from a bloke who is very cynical when it comes to rookie options and their cash gen potential.

Back in the day if you went mostly GnR and traded conservatively, you were almost guaranteed to do well. Now with a million trades and boosts, SC strategy is wide open, lots of different things work.
