If Hurley was allowed to play back, I'm very confident we'd be rating him ahead of Heppell. Trouble is, he probably won't get to do that 'til JD reaches maturity.

This I agree with.
I don't think he'll ever be as good a forward as he is a backman, did you see what he did to Matthew Primus in his first game? I haven't ever got a man-rection quite as hard.

Tredrea, not Primus.

Unless there was a bit of the game where Hurls marched off-field, up into the Port coaches box and gave Matty Primus a bit of that off-field aggro that we've heard about, and I missed it.

I assume you mean Tredrea? :p

Even what he did against Cloke was very encouraging, considering the the form Hooker had played him into. I still claim the best game he's played for us is against J.Roo - absolutely smashed him.

Yeah look, I rate Hurley but it's to the point where he's so talked about that I just wanna see something happen, I haven't seen a game by him that made me go "Woah! What a star" since he beat Hawthorn and got us into finals.
Doesn't have to tear it up to be absolutely vital to structure, now and for the foreseeable future, whichever end of the ground he ends up at.

Oh shit! Hahahaha I cannot believe I said Primus, it was because I was just having a conversation about Les Claypool, Primus' lead singer/bass slapper.

Yeah but the difference is, Heppell tears it up, something chronic.

But isn't vital to structure. So, obviously a tradeoff there if we're considering future importance.
Yet most people wouldn't put Heppell up there with Hurley in terms of importance?

Maybe, mind you, it's been a while since I have seen someone come in and instantly become so important to a side, such as Heppell has.

Really depends what you classify as youngster. I maintain my view that in his draft I would have taken him at pick 2, I don't see how Swallow hasn't justified his position, and rightly so the bloke is a gun for the Suns. Look is he the 2nd best kid in his draft, well in my view yes.

Bennell not just an outside player. Id prefer him over Heppell. Remember hes also playing for GC and the team is so inconsistent that its hard as a player in just their second year who was/is home sick to be consistent aswell.

I think Darlings upside is limited. I reckon we have almost seen already what he can do. Hes a 191cm forward who has shown can play as a key forward due to his strength. I think he was a 40-50 goal forward this year. He might become a 65-70 goal forward.

As for best youngster as alreaady said depends where you draw the line. I still funnily enough think Hurley is the best youngster and has the most upside. Oh wait i forgot about NN as most upside.

The 2010 draft looks a beauty. Id pick him at 4 behind the number one and two that year. Swallow is a star and been hampered by injury alot so far yet has still been very good, any other kid with his injuries would have done bugger all so far. I also think people are forgetting Gaff, hes been very good and has shown plenty of upside and consistency. I think once he gets attention he may well struggle which should well be next year.

Just to go back to an earlier point, for a moment:

Heppell > Gaff > > > > > > > > > > Darling.

Darling is going ok, but he's not going to keep getting better at the rate of the other two.

A true CHF can actually play bloody well without kicking 8. That's a modern thing and far too simplistic.
Watch the dreamtime game this year, Hurley & Crameri both tore them up playing as big leading targets, but I think only 1 or 2 goals between them. A casual glance at a stats sheet wouldn't give you anywhere near the picture.

Players like Gaff and Heppell are marvels, in that you don't see many step into AFL with the sort of form they did and maintain it. Gaff for me had a far better 2012, consistently effective; Heppell had a messy kind of year, IMO, but I do expect an awful lot of him.

Franklin seems to be the only player left that can dominate a game just by kicking goals, not that that's all he does.

Riewolt can according to richmond posters and the media, and yes that is all he does (apart from throwing fits and giving the bird to supporters and/or the opposition bench).

I would be embarrassed of Jack Riewoldt if I was a Tigers fan.

Everything about him screams "imbecile". Hardwick should shut him up for good.

Edit: I think we get distracted by the argument about who is the "best". Heppell is very easily in the top echelon of players drafted in the last 3 years which is all that matters.

When the alternatives have been Brad Miller, Tyrone Vickery and Jake King, you have little choice but to back him in.
