The Mercuri saga was just tragic for the guy and a total debacle for the club. It would have to be lightening striking twice.
 
Don't know I'm supposed to sleep with these arousal levels beginning to peak after hearing the news. Absolutely delighted and I can't wait to watch his career unfold over the next five years. I hope it includes a premiership or two.

Things have changed with free agency. This will take past his FA eligibility years (years 7 & 8). As a restricted FA we could end up paying more if another club tries to poach with a huge offer and we have to match to keep him. Worth the risk these days.

Mercs was 26 when that five year deal was signed.

Great to hear this.

Steven Peake was discussing this on SEN last night and how good it was. He also made the comment that Dyson is one of the nicest guys you will meet

I'd hope it went like that but given our club's performance with any sort of corporate governance recently, I'm more inclined to believe it happened like Jade suggested and we threw in a few more pairs of jocks so he could find a new lucky pair.

I think that the contact offered to #2 and the aftermath were pretty prominent in AFL circles, as it showed that putting so much time into a player left some risks (both football and personal).

I don't have the stats to back it, but I'd be surprised to see many more 5 year contacts through the 90' and early 00's after his, as clubs mostly worked with 3 year blocks for their best players.

Buddy's deal, of course, was something different again.

Mercs form drop off wasn't entirely football related either.
