Hands are worse than Josh Eyre . The only chance he has is if he morphs into a defender. It’s a shame as he is mobile and makes a few tackles.

I’m going all tin foil crackpot here but I would like to see him played on the wing for a bit. Just like they did with Richo that time he nearly won a Brownlow. Get him out of contested situations and in situations where he can use his height and wheels to an advantage.

Yet in was it 2019 he was drifting across packs and clunking them quite regularly before his perpetual run of injuries commenced.

Just isn't close to the same player. Give him 6 weeks in the VFL to find confidence and form then reassess

Got to admit, morphing forwards to defenders is our specialty… might be crazy enough to work.
Even just play him in defence (VFL) just to get confidence running at the ball and actually touching the ball.

He seems to be in the trying too hard mode where nothing works. Think he is just devoid of confidence. Probably has a eye on Caddy too just making it worse.

He may amount to nothing for us which is a shame but I think someone would pick him up for nothinng.

Commentators seemed to talk him up all the time.

The main stuff and obvious stuff that you want a key forward to be good at, he struggled yesterday with (Eg: Marking)

But I think his ground work and follow up work is deceptively good for a “key forward” or at least someone his size. And it’s something as a forward mix we need to be aware of, when we’re also playing Wright, Stinger and Langford (the latter 2 okay when the ball hits the deck offensively, but aren’t providing a lot in terms of pressure).

It’s particularly notable if we do what I assume we’ll do in the next week or 2, and drop him for Draper to play 2 rucks.

Wright, Draper, Stringer, Langford is just asking for the ball to get strolled out of there.

Doesn’t need to go to the wing to be out of the contest, he is doing a great job of avoiding it right now

Could be wrong but stringer had the most tackles by a forward for us last year

I am one of Jones' biggest fans, but it does seem that his best attributes (runs all day, good tackler, repeated efforts) are not those of a key forward. Also, from reports, Caddy did not look ready to come in based on the VFL praccy match.

Yes I thought he had very good hands when he came to us - even his very first practise match against WCE over here in Perth I remember people were excited about his marking hands. How does the attribute we desperately need disappear.

Jones has a very nice leap and sticky hands once he gets a run and jump at the ball and his timing to jump is often perfect

Was definitely meant to be a good marking player when drafted. Needs a good block of games in the VFL to get his timing and confidence back if one of Draper or Caddy are fit to come in.

This is correct right now, but wasn’t always the case. In 2021 he was floating across packs and clunking genuine contested marks. There was a fair bit of J Hird about it and he was totally honest in his attack on the ball in the air.

What on Earth has happened?

He did halve a huge amount of contests yesterday

Feel like the issue was his inability to get separation. Not sure why he couldn’t.

At peak confidence he has shown he can mark the footy in packs. It would be a solid start back towards his best if he was able to get his hands on some easier grabs
