Hey North fans,

A couple of weeks ago we analysed LDU's game and where we saw room for improvement.

This week one of our discussion points was on Tom Powell. I'm a huge fan of him and I am extremely excited about his future.

I would love to hear your thoughts on him and where you see he can take his game

he's very light, but he still plays like a strong midfield bull. when his weight gets up there he's going to be a force. can't really think of much else he needs to work on

Yeah, you missed on one point in your article. Hes not slow.

Powell is quick. Much quicker than described preseason. Definitely a sub 3 second 20m type.

He spreads with good speed. Has out sprinted plenty of handy types at AFL level already.

He often ranks in the top handful of players for average speed no?

Powell’s quite rapid when he wants to be - haven’t really seen many burn him off.

Yeah okay that's interesting to learn. His stoppage craft is so good for a player of his experience that maybe he just seemed slow on the tape.

Thanks for the feedback

His situational awareness is incredibly good. So good he seems to know where everyone within about 30 m is at any given point in time and approximately where they will be a second or two later.

Great skills and athleticism but its what is going on behind his eyes that really stands out.

I thought his kicking was his weakest point earlier in the year. (From the little I saw of him.) He mentioned it at one point soon after as something he needed to work on and its certainly not been an issue in the last few rounds. (He had a hip operation in November 2019 so that might have had something to do with it.) So it seems like he is quick to work on improvement as well. Seems like a very high quality player.

Check out the Geelong game if you get a chance. He went level pegging with Isaac Smith in a flat out foot race, leveling the contest despite starting at a disadvantage.

Yeah its what makes him so unique as a first year player - His vision to see over packs and read the different layers of a stoppage and then actually execute well placed handballs is incredibly impressive.

As I said in regards to his statistic rankings for 1st-2nd year players, he already has an incredibly balanced inside / outside game. I haven't noticed his speed as of yet but from what everyones saying, that's a strength of his game as well.

To see so little weaknesses in his game so early on is really encouraging to see. I think he will become an elite midfielder in the competition.

Is there a statistic that measures the quality of disposals? If so iam sure Powell would rate highly.

We drafted Simon Black at pick 13. Incredible stuff. If the recruiters new how good he would be we would have taken him with pick 3.

Went yard for yard with Isaac Smith chasing a loose ball down at Cousinphucker Stadium the other week.

A training drill pic was posted to Twitter last week that had Tom smiling.

Not sure if that's the required intensity we want to see from first year rookies.

Other than that it's looking pretty good.

Mental to think what he's going to do when he's in triple the amount of stoppages.

One thing supporting North Melbourne post 2002 has taught me - don't assume linear progression out of any promising player.

He was, in the very true sense of the word, an astounding footballer. If he had come over to Victoria at 23-24 and stayed then I am confident we would be talking about him alongside Leigh Matthews & Greg Williams. The only man who ever gave Matthews a complete & utter shellacking.

Now, young Tom has a ways to go, but the kid's triangulation capability with handball, is right up to the level of the best I have seen.

His ability to trap the ball and release to the outside, is elite. It jumped out the first time I studied him.

Agree, and it's the consistency he's doing it every game so early in his career. Imagine what he will be able to do at say, 100 games in. LOOK OUT

Wonder if he feels a lot less pressure being outside a top 10 pick?
He has shown up a lot more fancied draftees, just goes to show how much drafting is a bit of a lottery. Surely tom is the prototype scouts should be looking out for?
I think it has a lot to do with his strength, his football mind, which has allowed him to step up so well.

Looking at someone like LDU who was an underage bully, it clearly stands out at junior level and of course will take time for him to be able to replicate that against men. We are just starting to see what he can do in the clinches.

Whereas someone like Tom doesn't have those eye-catching moments of physical brilliance, his decision-making ability carries with him as he progresses.
