I can see Powell playing th same type of role that Liam Shiels played at Hawthorn. Will need to learn to play his role, as he is never going to be the main man in this midfield. If he can play some half back, some run with and some wing, he will keep his spot. If he is under the impression that he is going to get Genuine midfield minutes then I think he will be dissapointed

He's not looking any better or different to his size this year.

So hopefully it all comes together and he finally becomes that consistent damaging ball winner we know he can be.

I rate Tommy.

Was good being reminded of his U18 numbers by Shermanator.

I'd absolutely pictured a stodgy Tom Mitchell type.

Tom's height and class with ball in hand were not what I expected.

If he can somehow that sheer weight of possession from juniors to his AFL game he'd make a really interesting player.

In the closest thing they did to match sim drills today, he was spending time in a “sweeper” type role just in front of the designated defenders.

Yeah that's a reasonable thing to inquire about.

First and foremost, they play a different role.

Moreover, I think Phillips is set for a massive year. He's looking fit and fully recovered from his illness, and I think he knows that this is his last chance. I'm expecting big things from him this season.

At the risk of being called a Powell hater or anything similar, I think he might struggle to stay in the 22 this year.

Yes Scott built like a twig with shit disposal is integral to our side.
When we're stagnant, guess who's moving, providing an option, and imploring someone to come at him, despite his crap disposal? Bailey Scott.

When we're down and out in the last quarter having thrown another game away, guess who's still hunting ground balls like it's the first quarter and looking like an AFL player compared to the rest of our unfit plonkers? Bailey Scott.

Whose performance generally doesn't waver when most of the rest of the team fluctuate like my IBS symptoms? Bailey Scott's.

If you don't think he's important, you haven't been paying attention. It's not his fault that someone with better disposal hasn't displaced him yet. I think he and Sheezel are the only two players over both of the last two years who could be trusted to do their jobs with any sort of consistency. Maybe throw LDU in there too when healthy. Scott has a limited ceiling but so do a multitude of wingmen. It'd be nice if some of the team could take a leaf out of his book, frankly

Still can't believe we sacked Curtis Taylor after he placed in the B&F.

He’s legitimately scared of physical contact. He’s not setting an example for anyone outside of his aerobic endurance, which is in part due to his size. The fact you’re lauding a very limited and average footballer further emphasises why we have won 6 games in 2 years.

Scott isn't scared of physical contact lmao

You could argue he over errs on the side of staying outside the contest as an outlet, but considering the number of blokes we've had that say '**** that' to structure and just see ball get ball it's almost refreshing.

Not as scared as Taylor or Stephenson or Fisher or Stephens, but sure, I take your point. A wingman isn't a hard-at-it physical specimen. Colour me shocked. He obviously sets an example in the way he prepares and never stops trying. Also, my 'lauding' (I'd call it regular praise, it's not like I'm enchanted by his football ability) of him isn't a reflection of anything except the pathetic fact that we have a pack of footballers who are orders of magnitude less effective than they should be. He's one who is as effective as he should be, therefore he gets mentioned, and gets defended when people like you come along and shit on them.

Also, my views do not impair or improve the team's performance one jot, so it's not an emphasis of why we've won six games in two years at all. You'd have to ask those who actually spend time at the club to get the reasons for that

some people are so ****ing dumb. they see a guy get the ball 30 times on the outside and instead of intuiting that maybe that's what the coaches are telling him to do it's "uurrrrrr weak man be cowardly"

At the risk of being called a Powell hater or anything similar, I think he might struggle to stay in the 22 this year.

I have him and Parker playing the same role, and I think Parker edges him out.

From the other thread, here's how I see the 22 this year;

B: Archer - Logue - Corr
HB: Goater - Comben - C. Daniel
C: McKercher - Sheezel - Stephens
HF: Zurhaar - Darling - Simpkin
F: Curtis - Larkey - Duursma
R: Xerri - LDU - Wardlaw
INT: Parker, Phillips, Ford, B. Scott
Sub: (From) Powell, Fisher, Konstanty
Goater most likely will not be ready R1. TP can play HB until Goat has enough fitness.

Then move TP to Stephens’ wing spot. Tom now has the fitness. Imagine him in space on the wing delivering darts inside 50 or causing havoc pinpointing an inbound kick to release Kerch in the middle…

Nope. There’s been more than enough occasions where he hasn’t gone in hard at the ball when required.

In the closest thing they did to match sim drills today, he was spending time in a “sweeper” type role just in front of the designated defenders.

Love him and want him to stay. But honestly believe he’ll request a trade if we keep using him off half back.

He’ll be after regular midfield minutes elsewhere and will easily get it.

I'd prefer him to stay obviously, but in all honesty if he is entering his prime in a year and good enough to be starting 4-6 mid at any club in the land that's actually a good thing for us.

He’ll be in the same boat at either Adelaide and Poorta. Not gonna change. He needs to go to that level above, work harder defensively (which means chase) before he can be considered a regular midfielder.

He ticks boxes, just not every box.
