Can someone tell us more about what kind of a player he is? What's he good at, what roles has he been used in? All the stuff we get about a new draftee.

Here's his draft profile from RMC in 2017: https://central.rookieme.com/afl/player/ben-paton/

And here's his Wikipedia page which fills in some more good info about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Paton_(Australian_footballer).

What they reveal is that (at least pre-injury) he was quick and had a good vertical leap, both useful attributes for defenders (and, no doubt, footy players generally).

I'd still like more up to date information and news about how he played and was used at Saints, if anyone knows?

That broken leg was a real shame, because before that he was looking like being our no.1 lockdown small defender for the next dozen years, but he hasn’t gotten back to that level since.

He’s a very good height for that role (as he can play on the smaller, quicker types, and also the medium sized HFF types), and he’s got a good leap, so he’s very competitive in the air.

He also uses that leap to intercept mark well, something he’s good at. He took lots of intercept marks in the VFL last season.

Is very dual-sided, so much so that in the U18’s he would sometimes kick out from full back on his non-preferred left foot, which is something you almost never see.

Can potentially also do tagging/run-with jobs on a wing, or perhaps even in the middle.

Wish him all the best.

Was a really good lock down defender prior to his broken leg with a somewhat fearless attack on the ball.
Since the injury however he has struggled to make an impact and seems to play extremely cautiously.
He has lost a yard of pace so that point of difference is no longer there and his vertical leap is not what it was.
I wish him well but fear his injury has seriously curtailed what was a very promising AFL career.

I was about to ask when he suffered his broken leg before realising I could easily look that up. Pre-season 2021. So that’s four seasons ago.

I’m trying to reassure myself with the Gary Rohan story. He also took a long time to regain confidence, though he had other injuries and some personal tragedy to deal with too.

Still, a change of scene served him well. He gave Geelong several seasons of valuable performances.

Just because he did doesn’t mean the same will apply to Paton, but we can choose to be hopeful. He didn’t cost much draft capital and probably isn’t taking up much salary cap.

Frankly Haz has too much razzle-dazzle to be compared to Smooch. Sure, he locks down well, but he doesn't wear his opponent like a glove so you don't even know he's there in the same way. You wouldn't catch Nick Smith scoring a GOTY contender!
Not enough rizz or gyatt in this post. I am shook.

“I back myself in to play”

Not saying he's ugly or anything, but I feel like I have seen at least 2,000 men in my lifetime who look exactly like this guy.

Unless I've just met Ben Paton 2,000 times.
