Is it a fair question to question his kicking distance yet for a big forward? Or are my eyes really starting to fail me?

If he’s clunking them from 20 meters out from goal, does it really matter?

No it does not. But....for a big forward to be worth the effort they really need to kick them from outside 50 or close to it. On initial observations it seems he cannot.

I think perhaps we could have a little patience instead of making snap calls like this on the back of one preseason game. Particularly when it’s one of the few he’s played against actual opposition in the last 2-3?

Maybe see how he goes kicking for goal in a few VFL games before declaring he can’t kick from 50.

First attempt was pretty average. Maybe he does not have a 50 meter leg. Not overly concerned as long as the 1 to 40 range works.

Looking at his under 16 highlights he certainly doesn't look like Joe D but you would think that 50 metres is well in his range. It could still be lack of confidence in the knees.

There were multiple set shots that fell short at that end of the ground from both teams. There seemd to be a wind blowing towards the opposing corner of the ground from which the main camera was.

You could tell because the smart defenders were playing in front at the clubrooms end of the ground as the balls were constantly falling short and being held up in the air.

Wanganeen put one through at half post height from 40m at the other end. I'll wait to see how Baldwin goes in more controlled conditions to see his kicking range.

So you're saying Devon Smith can actually kick 40m and it was the winds fault

His kicking looks a bit unusual in that he jabs at it, rather than having a long swing of the leg. The fact that he ran out looked like he knew he would struggle for the distance, rather than it being a miskick. On the positive side, I remember when Lloyd first started (admittedly only 17yo) he popped it up and lacked penetration, and look how his kicking turned out.

I thought he was renowned for having a cannon.

In any event, he desperately needs 10 games in a row for all the obvious reasons.

You're a cruel individual if you're thinking about exposing Baldwin to a AFL tall defender at this stage.
