Not sure we want him to kick the ball just for the sake of kicking it. He wins the ball in tight and has very creative hands, rather he play to his strengths then one of his clear weaknesses

Obviously he'll have to kick the footy in a game but I'm not sure I'd make it his clear focus. If he was giving dodgy hospital handballs because he didn't want to kick the thing that would be a different story but I don't see that happening

-Handball to kick ratio get closer to 1:1
-Tackle count higher
-Hit the scoreboard
-String 30-35 games senior together with a winning record
So, we revisit this in 2025 at some point? On the proviso that we actually win more than half of them.
Also, how often would you like him to hit the scoreboard?

It just sounds to me that you want him to be an elite mid before you'd reconsider your position and views on him lol

Beat me 2 it lol. Difficult to have a winning record when many believe we won’t win much at all. Kid needs to play.

I see Dow as a similar player to Shane Edwards. Smart, evasive and quick. He's quick with his hands and can release players starting our chain. We have missed that for the past 3 years.

Now we just need a Lambert replacement and we are set.

This is what I do agree with Yze tearing down past champions. No one is a replacement.

Every player is his or her own player, own skills and way and has their own journey. Dow may become a great contributor but he will be no replacement, nor will anybody else who makes it!!!

Some people here need to read books more as they live in the past!!!

Apparently Dow is improving which is great because I think he is quite versatile potentially so if he is more competitive in one role he helps his chances in other roles to make our team stronger

i basically said this yesterday and again today in the KMac thread. Great observation as Pickets best is very often in the second half and mainly last quarters.

Not convinced personally.

I think his handball to kick ratio is very far out of skew. I admire his ability to be willing to be involved around stoppage but we already have Taranto who is limited in the kicking area of his game.

His game in my opinion does not translate to fast ball movement. He would be an absolute nightmare for forwards to lead to as he is choosing hands over kicking 90% of the time.

I think he will get games with Prestia possibly injured. But this being his 5th year in the system I can’t see the ratio changing much.
Tom Mitchell handballs a lot..

Hopefully its Dow for Cotch in the 22.

This is a very big concern. Taranto, Dow and Prestia midfield is not a good combo.

He’s a ball winner. We need to back him in and start setting our runners to come from behind to support him. He could be our best stoppage mid by seasons end.

Seems to be a ball winner...and he's also the size of a whippet wringing wet!
He's very elusive on his feet...avoiding the gorillas! Couple of heavy tackles on him that stick could see him crippled by Seasons end!

Think his size is quite deceptive
He’s very well defended so makes him look super skinny but he isn’t getting pushed off the ball or anything so he’s obviously got some decent core strength

I wouldn’t go telling him to add the kgs otherwise it might slow him down when his speed in the contest is one of his biggest assets

Similar to Bolton and Edwards

I don't see it with him. I think there's a distinct lack of football IQ and skills required to be a modern effective AFL midfielder.

There is nothing to lose this season so by all means give him games and opportunity.

But I am not as hyped as some by his preseason performance. He was okay at best. He's a 5th year mid who hasn't even been tearing up the VFL in previous years. The odds are stacked against him based off this.

If he had a high footy IQ he's be a gun. So maybe a good, creative distributor who brings players into the game, a few of them have won Brownlow's over the years, Mitchell, Priddus. He has been our best mid in two early games which should give him a lot of confidence going forward. Plus he gives us a bit of spark due to his quickness around the pack, without him we are rather slow.

He has played only 3 seasons, and was probably played too early due to his low draft number and not having the body for his inside mid position. He is only 22 years old, turns 23 in Oct. so he is still pretty young.

As you could see last night it’s ok to have one mid that is handball first when you’ve got speed and elite kickers around the contest.
I reckon Hopper & PrestiaTarranto is too many of the same type.

I do remember having a slow look at a qtr of a Dogs loss. Around ball ups Libratore was just quick getting hands on the ball around stoppages, often bang it on his foot. Bont there too.

Vs Pies, TT 6; Prestia & Dow 5 clearances..

TT, JH hanballed more than Dow vs the Pies.

It’s not like we really got dominated at clearance
Pies only had 4 more for the game and only 3 extra centre clearances and we beat them for contested ball

They were just more efficient with ball in hand and happy to hold ground with uncontested ball and marks where we went a lot more aggressive down the line to contests

Who is going to tell Yze it is probably not going to happen this year??

Focus on development and the years ahead

Season hasn't begun and we are looking forward to the next preseason. It was a practice match, reknown for being half hearted and sloppy... Prestia didn't go when he had to, Bolton was lazy, Dusty couldn't kick straight.... let's just wait 6 weeks or so before we throw in the towel.

I did not say throw in the towel, I am just saying the premiership this year could be a little on the too ambitious side

For example, if Kane Mcauliffe becomes a superstar, 2026 would be more likely

No point looking ahead. Last season was a bit of a waste, new coach, new players anything could happen. Gain a few, lose a few next year, so who knows. Premiers 2024, the odds are good.

He's more like a young Greg Williams in my eyes. If he can develop a lot more and somewhat come within being 60% as good as him, we have a winner. As one of my favourite lines ever from Clint Eastwood goes, " A man's got to know his limitations!". If he understands his hands are far better than his feet and releases the ball that way, he will be a weapon.
Greg Williams kicking was elite
