Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

What is this rumour circulating about Davey not getting along well with Knights and possibly wanting out by seasons end (rumoured to be Melbourne to be with Aaron)?

Anyone know what is happening here? Any truth behind the rumour?

The first that's been heard of this rumour was from a Melbourne poster known as 'davey_magik' or something to that effect.

Given we've heard nothing else of this rumour, one would think that it's a kid dreaming of uniting the two Daveys.

Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

2 more years for Alwyn. :thumbsu:

ESSENDON has rebuffed interest from Melbourne in Alwyn Davey and will re-sign the youngster on a two-year deal next week. Davey, who is already training after a knee reconstruction early this year, has agreed to terms on a new deal.

It is the last of Essendon's key signings, with coach Matthew Knights intent on focusing on the 2009 season.

Coaches, team-mates and supporters sorely missed the excitement and skill that Alwyn Davey brings to the field each week in 2008. The explosive forward managed to pull on the jumper five times bringing his career tally to 19 games before enduring another season ending injury (knee). Davey’s speed, natural talent and intense tackling pressure is a huge asset for the team and the return of Essendon’s pocket-rocket in 2009 will be a massive boost. Entering his third AFL season, the 24-year-old’s rehab has gone to plan and, surely, his luck must turn around soon.

Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

He was one of our most important players tonight. He may not get alot of the ball but he puts so much pressure on the opponents. We missed him more last year then people realise.

Alwyn Davey

Okay there was a little bit of time between players, but I figured whilst there was still good discussion in the forum [Captain, PSD, Rookie Draft] there was no real reason for me to do a thread. There is still some good discussion but I am pretty busy for the next week, so I thought I would chuck this out there. Done in a short amount of time, not proof read, forgive my laziness. Davey is one of my favourite players.

Description:
Alwyn is the younger brother of Aaron Davey [Melbourne] and cousin of Brownlow Medalist Gavin Wanganeen. He earned the nickname ‘Froggy’ for his unique running style and ability to run down opponents with a great lunge to bring them down. 2009 was his 3rd season with Essendon, and showed his potential in 2007 before going down with a broken arm. In 2008 he went down with a serious knee injury which sidelined him for most of the season, and into the pre-season. He is a typical excitement machine, who is able to make a crowd take a collective breath as he viciously tackles an opponent. With his explosive pace [held the 20m sprint record at Essendon for a while] he can do amazing things, and is also a decent shot on goal. He isn’t limited by his height or size, displaying his courage on a weekly basis. This was shown by him earning the AFL Army Award in 2007, he had 3 of the final 6 nominations. [Does anyone have the footage of this?] Also earned the Rising Star Award for Essendon in 2007, and 5 nominations for goal of the year in 5 games.

Season Review:
Coming off such a serious knee injury, there were not huge expectations on Alwyn for 2009. He did start off in some good form but really slowed down as the year progressed, which highlighted his interrupted pre-season. He did injure his shoulder at the end of the season forcing him to miss the Hawthorn game and the final. He also missed the West Coast game with a knee niggle, a game in which his speed and defensive pressure was missed. Froggy may have had a fairly average year, but he managed to have the equal 3rd most tackles for the year, was 5th in inside 50s, 5th for clearances and 5th for goal assists. He polled 78 out of a possible 800 votes in the Crichton Medal to earn 19th place. He also earned a Brownlow vote in the North game.
He refined his game in some respects this year, but at times was unable to run out games. He was the only one that applied defensive pressure consistently through the year. He was able to kick goals with 3 against Richmond [Rd 9], and also is still able to use his explosive pace to run down opponents with 8 tackles against Fremantle[Rd 2], 1 goal and 2 goal assists. Some other memorable moments include him running down Jack Watts from about a 10m gap, and him tackling Sandilands in a David vs Goliath remake. [Anyone got a pic/video of this?]

2010 Aims:
With a full pre-season we all want Alwyn to recapture his 2007 form. He needs to be able to kick a little more accurately, almost kicking the same amount of goals as behinds. This may be expected as his shots on goal are usually while he is being tackled by two people. But if he is able kick 20-25 goals next season, this would add another dimension to his game. He has been formed into a defensive forward this year, due to his tackling ability. His role is becoming more and more important with many other teams working by rebounding off half-back, and if Froggy can stop this a few times a game, it would cement his spot in the side. He leads the way in regards to defensive pressure as Essendon may have a fairly tall/slow forward line in 2010. He doesn’t have much competition for his spot though, which is a bit of a worry. Jetta and Colyer are the only others that could fill his role, but it is questionable if they could offer the same defensive pressure and travel back to help out in defence. Atkinson is another name floated as a possibility to replace Froggy, but it is unknown if he is able to kick goals.

My rating: 5.5/10

Re: Alwyn Davey

He looked to me like a guy that had missed a year off footy.

Wasn't as sharp as previous seasons and looked like he was getting lost in the play at times.

Given the chance of a full pre-season and added responsibilty through the midfield, he should take big steps forward next season.

Re: Alwyn Davey

Watching Alwyn last season i thought he had lost some confidence. He fumbled the ball a bit and seemed to play for a few too many free kicks. Hopefully next season he is in better form.

Totally agree, for me I feel as though 2009 was a waste for Davey. He lost his energy and his side-ways movement, but that is very understandable considering what he went through in 2008.
He has been performing well at training so it will be as though he will be an extra addition for us next year. Really looking forward to watching him again.

Re: Alwyn Davey

Davey becomes very important to the EFC in 2010 with the loss of Lovett. I believe he struggled last year and it looked like a lack of confidence in his own body to stand up after the injuries he has had. If he does recapture his form 2007 we as a footy club will be in for a very good year considering the horror draw we have.
Go Bombers 2010

Re: Alwyn Davey

STAY AT HOME FROGGY.

Jeez it annoys me to see a garden gnome trying to play as a hit-up marking option.

Has an important role, is very good at that role, but needs to focus on that, not trying to do everything. Especially when he was clearly only at about 90% most of the year.
If you're 2'3" and can only kick 35m, you're not going to be the best player in the comp

I agree he had somewhat of a frustrating season, and he was never at full fitness [don't actually know this, making an assumption]
But if he was to stay at home, is there anyone on the list that could feasibly replace him?
I think that he did a decent job of being the defensive forward this year, but still has much to improve on. But I personally would like to see him work on the forward part of defensive forward. I would like to see him be the goal sneak we are missing. I don't think he needs to be the best player in the comp, but if he did his role well, and also got a few goals I would be happy.
Our forward line was, at times, like watching a dog trying to **** a doorknob, and as they play more together and work out each other's roles they will work better as a team. You are quite right in saying that he shouldn't be a real marking option, but should be a crumber/nagger forward.
sorry that went in circles... If he wasn't in the team who would you replace him with, or do you think that there would be another way to cover his role?

Re: Alwyn Davey

I'm pretty sure he meant stay at home in the forward 50 and not venture out of the 50 as a leadup forward when that is not his most effective role.

Re: Alwyn Davey

Frustratingly in 2009 - thought that he was our CHF on many occassions.

Do you think that with the different structured forward line that he won't be caught out playing in such a role? He is obviously unable to play it successfully, but with more time playing together I don't think Davey will be forced into playing as CHF at all.
