Delisted #29: Alwyn Davey- Not offered a contract for 2014

Alwyn Davey is the worst mistake of the current coaching department and match committee. He was in great form before he broke his arm. Since coming back they have completly stuffed up the management of him. In and out of the side, only in as a sub, missing weeks all together to be the emergency ect ect.

Blistering pace is an enormous weapon to have and with Winderlich and Dempsey out injured Davey should be very important to the side. He should have been given a few games in the twos and then brought back into the side not as a sub so he had a chance to work into the game. With ruckmen filling in for an injured Gumby and Hurley our forward line lumbers around enough. We need Davey in form and full of confidence to provide that zip and energy around it.

Completely ineffective and back into his "Look at me! I'm a CHF" bad habit last week

Opportunity's still there but been pretty disappointing in the real stuff.

Winders/Jetta/Zaha/Reimers have been better, the first 3 by a huge stretch.

Really....you heard him say that did you, "Look at me! I'm a CHF."
What a ridiculus comment! How do you get that from watching him or any other player play.

His inside 50 because his a forward! Do you think players who start in the pocket should stand there all game.

And what subs have you seen come into the game and make a huge impact.

He did what little he could in an all round pretty disappointing game from our boys.

I got that from where he was turning around at 40 out and leading straight up the corridor like a CHF and from where he was doing the same thing early last year & all the year before that.
If you're that small you either lead very wide or not at all and push for 'front and centre'.

While I agree he should avoid trying to be the lead up option, sometimes we get caught out b/cos all of our players get sucked up into the press and we are left with no one forward, so someone has to present

But for some reason he's always a bit eager to lead at it, he should be the guy level to where the ball is running back with it and using that pace once the ball hits the deck.

It's a bit hard with him because he really can only do one job; and it's not like you can really work on a lot else other than that job @ AFL level; so he's either in the 18 or no use at all.

He's 27 and he's still making silly mistakes like postitioning - do we draw anything from that?

He cant out muscle or out mark most defenders because of his size, so his only ability to mark is on the lead. And with the acceleration he has, he can get front position on any defender, and come at the kicker hard and fast.

Your saying he shouldn't take the corridor because of his size!

To resign a forward to areas he can and cant lead, especially because of his size, is foolish.
As long as he doesn't cut off another forwards lead, you want your forwards presenting wherever there's space.

The only reason the first three have been better is because they've played! Being injured and coming into the game as a sub doesn't prove anything.

His preseason was great, just needs to be played consistently before you can make that call.

Clearly I'm a big fan of his :D. I just want to see him in at his best!

it's always seem absurd to me that we harshly criticise stanton, prismall, myers etc when davey has literally done nothing since his first season. yeah yeah yeah injures but really.
He was very good after coming back into the side last year. It was almost instant he got dropped - realised he'd better figure out what his job is, came back a much better player.

3 or 4 times I noticed the leads up the guts against Richmond, for 1 completed mark & the other times the ball went straight back at a million miles an hour. They were dumb attempts with little awareness of what was around.

5'2" blokes cannot take booming CHF marks in a contested part of the ground. If he gets into total space, fine & good but he wasn't.

Quick! ring Jimmy and let him know; this is very important!!

I still reckon for a small crumbing forward he fumbles way too much when the ball is on the deck.

That's definately one flaw in his game. Iv'e heard it described as his feet are moving faster than what his hands can keep up :D

He does appear to be over excited or a little erratic when he gets his hands on the ball.
Would be far deadlier if he was a little more composed and think his way through a bit better.

I don't believe Davey will be disheartened - with his earlier injury interruptions, of course both his touch and his tank aren't going to be up to his usual standard.

Playing in the dreamtime game would have been special for him - and I believe this had something to do with his selection. And you can't fault his endeavour - in fact he was a little over-enthusiastic to begin with.

But at the same time Colyer's impressive and sustained VFL form cannot be ignored - and Colyer currently has the fitness base to go the whole game. He almost demanded to be rewarded.

If I were Hird, I'd simply tell Davey that if he gets a good run, and plays some good footy he'll be back in the the seniors in next to no time.

Spot on - particularly the bolded.

Looking at that youtube clip of his first 14 games (which i've seen before and i attended probably half of those matches too), it is like watching a different player.

Confidence is without question the most important quality in an afl footballer - no player can do well without it, and Froggy has struggled with this big time after those first 14 games.

The way he ran to a contest, the cut back inside and accelerated through traffic was a feature of his game, and seems like a feature he is almost too worried to try it now through fear of stuffing up.

Obviously the mindset of attacking a situation with the thought "this is what i do, i'm gonna nail this" is almost always going to deliver a different result than "just don't stuff this up".

I'm not sure if he can get back to what we all saw glimpses of, but either way he just needs to roll the dice and back himself in over and again - he won't make it otherwise.

Slatts 20 is right also - after i had severe doubts he'd ever find his mojo again, last year he came back and i was saying that was the first time since '07 he'd played with that mojo and was getting him close to his first year form....the signs were really good until he got hurt again.

He really just needs back himself all the way, and he's just such an effective player, so good to watch when he's going, and a genuine team lifter and momentum changing style of player when he's at his best, i for one hope we give him every chance to find the afore mentioned mojo. :thumbsu:

Go Frogwyn!!

.

Alwyn sets the tone of a game, he pressures the opposistion, last night was made for him particularly the first quarter as melbourne were so slow out of defence. He fires up his teammates and the crowd get taken along with him because he is that buzzing type of player. I think he has been poorly treated, he came on v richmond late and was obviously so wound up made some critical errors. He`d be one of my first picked purely for the fact that the smallest bloke on the ground makes his teammates walk taller.

And the fact that he hasn't played well - at AFL or VFL - all year since breaking his arm. Do we just ignore that because you get excited watching him play?

**** ! I can`t win with you. He has been totally stuffed around, particularly with this sub thing, would you at least admit that just in the way he goes about it IE, the tackling, the pressure the chasing, the 1%`s that often go unnoticed, the things he does when the ball is not in his hands, makes Essendon a different proposistion.
