Player Watch #29: Will Phillips [Part II] - Extends to End of 2025

If his preseason is as good as has been mentioned by the track watchers, he was probably going to play rd 1 with GW in the side.

I’d like to know if wilphi has been killing it at a level that LDU / sheez play at or at a lesser level
From what I’ve seen he has outperformed both Sheeze & LDU in match sims, but it’s only pre-season training so not sure that means too much…
I want him to succeed so bad, but gotta keep training performances in context. He may be going at 90% to earn that spot, while LDU/Sheez are cruising at 50%.

Impossible to tell until we get some opposition.
This.

Whilst I'm gutted for George, this is perhaps the best season we've been prepared for something like this. According to all reports, Powell has been tearing it up and Will has come back in top shape and seems ready to fulfil some of his potential. George may be out but I'm comfortable Luke Parker and Will can cover him until he's ready to return. In fact I'm kinda looking forward to it...

If Phillips holds his own and fulfills his potential, George might struggle to get back into the team

He's a good player but he won't be keeping Wardlaw out.

If he's doing that well we will just play both of them.

Every pre season. It's match sim people, this time last year Will was flying. Didn't make the round one team... again. He's on a one year contract for a reason. He's the only midfielder we have that's unable to rest anywhere other than the pine, I'm sure if we were 💯 on keeping him last season while he was out of form we should have been playing him forward or back, in the two's and seeing what he can do. Great that he's doing well in match sim but the tank and lack of versatility still has to be a concern.

Haven't seen training but for me getting to the contest repeatedly and being able to chase and breakaway at speed are the two things he has yet to consistently show. If he does, then he has the other tools to be effective. From the track watchers, he appears to have improved this.

All positive so far, looking forward to the practice matches. He'll be given every opportunity to prove himself but the lack of versatility is a massive issue. I'm lost as to why he wasn't played anywhere other than mid in the two's last season.

I'd promise Will Phil the first 12 games of the year and say "show us what you got." The kid bleeds blue & white - just needs a fair run at it. That's all I'm asking. The club owes him that much.
The club owes him 0. He was taken as a high draft pick and failed to cement his place in the side entering his 5th season.

Oh fair suck of Sav, club owes him everything. He won't blow a hammy like bloody Wardlaw. I am reminded of another Aus sporting champ in the way Will moves. Cliffy Young.

Not an insult but a compliment. Cliffy was a superstar, maybe Will should wear gumboots!

Cliffy had a better tank.

Yes. That's exactly what it's looking like. We are all of course hating George's injury, but we have a vastly improved Phillips and a certified gun in Parker, so it won't cost us as much as it might have in prior years.

He wasn’t flying last year in the preseason.

This is is his first uninterrupted preseason. He’s put on size, stays back after every training session, is running like a maniac, smashing match sims etc

Add in his sheer determination, competitiveness and incredible attitude and we can’t be excited? The challenges this kid has been through.

I think he deserves the criticism though. Just watch out for 2025 :)

Lazzaro couldn’t kick over 20m, hit a target by hand or foot and ran in areas where he was rendered useless. Wiph gets a whiff

Lazzaro career before being on a list wasn’t even close to Will?

Laz never wanted it either. Will desperately wants to be in the leadership group no matter how delusional people may think that is. He has that mentality

Lazaro was cat from the moment I laid eyes on him. Will at least, could be good with a clear run at it.
Wow lots of hate for Laz. He was a limited footballer who tried his very best. Absolutely not his fault we selected him.

I'm not sure what you are getting at.. I don't hate him, I'm calling his football ability as I saw it.

He nominated for the draft, so it really is nobody else's fault but his.

There are plenty of hacks, he just happens to be the Captain Courageous of them. That he tried hard is almost more of an indictment, not only for him, but also on our recruiters at the time.

I don't hate anyone who pulls on the stripes, let's get that one straight. I'm just not as lovely as you may be, I personally would take the win/Premiership over making new friends worrying about feelings or how someone would feel if they were to read it. Not my concern.

I have written before but Will always seemed to be destined to be a 200 + gamer clubman that will be looked back at being a solid role player but not a back page advert star. You need multiple of him that don't drain your salary cap or we end up in constant player movement like giants. He had one of the worst starts to AFL possible, covid draft, the dirty fever, a top draft pick in a struggle town team in a poor draft year etc.. Getting Parker with Wards injury is looking like a smart move as he could now take a lot of the inside mid muscle work and Will as the apprentice. The likelihood of shorter qtrs will help impact players like Will and not 30 plus possie marathon runners. FOS taken for impact. We have enough class, he can be the engine room grunt.

The legend grows every pre season. Let's wait and see how he goes.
