Player Watch #29: Will Phillips [Part II] - Extends to End of 2025

I thought the same six months ago, but his ceiling just seems to get lower and lower every time I watch him. Even if he gets his fitness up, the type of player he would become is a dime a dozen and not one we have a great need for. We could get a better replacement now for free.

We need to be more ruthless with these decisions.
On that metric of "he's had four years" you would have delisted somebody like Lachie Neale.
Neale said he had no idea what it took to be an elite footballer until his 6th year of footy. Some players take longer.
Now maybe Neale had shown a bit more than Will early on but Rossy Lyon gave him the arse and he went on to a Chaz.
Powell only just got through a full season of AFL. Will hasn't done that, so maybe those two need more development time.

I'm not convinced on Powell either. But there is a lot more to work with than Will. And if we are going to put this long into a player before any return, I'd want them to have a big upside. Both those guys need massive pre-seasons.

Not sure you should be comparing Will to Lachie Neale. Lachie averaged 27 disposals in his fourth season, including some massive games. Will can't do that in the twos. Lachie could cover ground and rack up footy. He wasn't the finished product, but was well on his way.

**** mate did he run over your dog too?

Worst player we’ve signed this year? Brayden george hasn’t played a single game and got signed for 2 years. Did you not see the job he done on Daicos and Clarry? FMD
Agreed, Will Phillips is still a player who can develop into that mid averaging disposal from 20-25 if he can reach that peak. He is a really good tagger and if Clarko was smart enough to keep him on, Daicos would have not done the damage in that 4th qt.
Give the man some love like f*** me

Haha, brilliant.

Powell can kick further than Will can run!

Not comparing him to Neale the player. It's the length of development time.

Not surprised he got offers from other clubs.

Being a clean player around the stoppages gives teammates confidence to get ahead of the footy.

Nothing looks better than when you have manic numbers running forward of the ball to slam through a great goal.

Amazing that he knocked back two years at one of the most professional and successful clubs of the modern era. It's almost unbelievable.....

Exactly…. And you were saying he wouldn’t even get one year offered to him at our club, LOL…..

Averaged 5 kicks for the year.
Dropped 4 or 5 times.
Subbed himself off during a game.
2 coaches votes for the year.
Finished the year with 16 and 12 disposals.
Regressed in stats for the year.
Zero 30 possession games for the year, including VFL.

Explain to me where I'm wrong, please.

I'm guessing you're one of the people that thought he's a great tagger.
I'm one of those people who thinks its hilarious you've contributed roughly 15 whole pages worth of the basically exact same post for one player. Suits me, i want my boy to get a part 3.

Won’t be hard. The phases “coaches votes”, “30 possessions” & “can’t run” repeated ad nauseam…we will get to part 6.

But what does being convinced mean? What do you want powell to do?

His job is to be a 2nd wave mid to fill in the hole where the more talented can play their natural game, just like phillips.

You were saying he wouldn’t play again for the year…. Then he gets brought back in after playing his role in the 2s
You also said he won’t be offered a contract by anyone, let alone us… he gets offered 2 years by Geelong (according to you….) and then he signs a 1 year deal with us

Just leave it bro, enjoy your 10 hour a day scaffolding job and forget about Phillips for a while, I don’t understand what he could have possibly done to you, to be living rent free in your head

Where'd the scaffolding come from? 🤣🤣

Tom goes missing for long periods in games. He needs to improve both his strength and fitness so he can stay involved for longer.
