I wonder if Will Phil regrets signing on for another year? With Parker and Houston coming on board, I doubt Will Phil plays a game in 2025.
If he's good enough he'll get games and if he's not he wouldn't have got them elsewhere either.

Pretty obvious as to what his review was all about….Running, running and more running. Club want him to drop a few kilo’s to help with his running capacity. The club still see a long term player there but he needs to take the next step with his endurance and repeat efforts.
Damn I thought he was already pretty lean. Stocky, yes, but can definitely see the need for a far superior tank. This exact time in 2015 I was doing placement at Whitten Oval and I remembered seeing Libba in the centre of the ground doing gut running repeats on his own. Grey t shirt, cap on, overcast day. No thrills just gut running.

When I make fun of a team in the off season who has finished last for the past four years, it’s because there are others in the AFL system that know exactly how much extra they have to do.

He needs to do what Froggy Dumont did a few years back, and really lean up through the trunk. He is lean but he is carrying too much weight in his legs. Unless you are a real explosive athlete like Holmes, Dangerfield or Wardlaw, having chunky legs is more of a hinderance than a benefit.

Those extra running sessions is exactly what’s needed for Phillips and plenty more players on our list.
 
Don’t worry guys. Jack Darling will soon be an NMFC player and he will set the training standards for Phillips and all our other mid paced footballers who struggle to run up and back on our list. :stern look

Doing power running sessions - is that going to reduce weight in his legs or build muscle? I'm no expert on these things, just wondering.

He will leave no stone unturned.

Attended many preseason training sessions where his poor running stood out. He'll likely have to start next year in the VFL but i'd love to see him get rock hard fit and really tear it up for a month there.

The club do not see a long term player. If they did, they would offer more than a one year deal. Pretty simple.
 
His problem is also that he has lost a lot of zip compared to his junior days.

Doing what Froggy did is a nice way to ensure you never become anything more than a temporary role player.

My two cents

There's nothing wrong with having muscular legs and if that's the club's genuine opinion then I'd shoot our SC staff out of a cannon to get them away from the players. As an elite marathon runner, maybe, but as a contact sport burst running athlete then it's ridiculous.

My interpretation though through losing some kgs and leaning up through the trunk is that they think he's carrying too much body fat rather than leg size.

To answer your question

He will lose size (and fat) if he eats at a deficit and will gain size (and fat and muscle) if he eats at a surplus.

If the stimulus he gives his legs is enough to grow the muscle then it will either retain better in a deficit or gain more muscle in a surplus.

Hard to say but I doubt changing running focus will move the needle either way compared to gym work.

Would love to see Parker take WP under his wing over the Summer and mentor him for his best year ever at the club. We have shown patience with the likes of X, Chom, Archer who have come good. Would love to see him in our best 22 with whatever role the coaches deem he adds the most value to the group.
