AFL Player # 3: Darcy Parish

the people trying to get rid of Darcy is the funniest thing.

we have been pissing and moaning for years for an inside mid to replace Jobe, we get an AA quality one through pure luck of having one on our list and people want to trade him.

Seriously, sometimes i ******* hate our supporter base.

The biggest knock on Parish is his defensive work-rate, his best form in 2021 was pretty damaging so meant he could get away with being a 5/10 defensive runner, he's not a Dusty that can be a 2/10 defensive runner though.

We unfortunately don't get access to the extra level of stats out there, but IMO Jobe would have excelled at contested possessions from hardball gets, whereas Parish earns his from looseball-gets and gathers from a hitout.

Parish is a good midfielder, you don't win Premiership with only one good midfielder so there's no pressing reason to push him out the door if he wants to stay, but if he does go, it might just allow us to rebalance our midfield with player(s) who win more hardball gets which complements a guy like Merrett who's at his best when he's getting the 2nd or 3rd possession in a chain and can run in to space.

if he wants to leave than that's a different story, but trying to push him out is ludicrous.

And now we have two proven one bigger body one with a year in the system who was rated the best inside mid in the draft and another just drafted .

Essendon has has been guilty of over rating exactly where we are at.
I personally am happy to see him stay if he keeps improving his defensive side but I am not ruling out accepting a great deal to build the list down the track.
No point trading out a lesser player if it is rebuild you are doing.

How on earth can you compare Parish and Watson as players?

If you're concerned with the approval of media, accolades and the stat sheet, sure maybe there is an argument.

But Watson bore the physical heat of our opponents for years before he had any real help. He became a front line mid in the game with players hanging off him. Parish rushes the ball away before the heat comes.

Jobe was a completely dog shit kicker of the football early in his career. He couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat in the middle of the pacific.

Jobe only became a gun when he was like 28 years old, before that he was mediocre at best.

Darcy is 25 years old FFS, and he already has an AA, and you want to turf him?

LOL

jobe carried that crap essendon midfield to finals in 2009. i feel like he turned a corner that year and was essentially top-tier inside players until 2014.

How old was Jobe in 2009? LOL.

Horsesh*t.
Penny dropped for Jobe at the end of 2005. Runner up in the B&F in 2006 on about 60-70% game time due to Sheed's issues with Jobes dad.
Still wasn't a great kick but his inside work in 06 was if not elite, then very close.

Jobe avg'd 4.5 clearances a game in 2009, Same age as Darcy is now.

Darcy is more than double that this year already, not to mention he already has an AA under his belt as an inside mid (175 clearances), when he was 23. had 20+ more clearances than when Jobe won his Brownlow.

Thats no sleight on Jobe, but to suggest Darcy is not comparable to Jobe at the same age is nothing short of laughable. He has plenty of time to fix the floors in his game, just like Jobe did.

Darcy is an absolute gun and is one of the best clearance players in the game. Saying he should be traded is just stupidity sorry.

The only reason Darcy gets traded is A) if he wants to go, and B) if someone gives us stupid overs.
