It is in interesting take but I don't agree with it. It would be like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Stewart, Reid, Ridley, Laverde, Cox are out injured. Our lack of options is down to injury.
I think Stewart is done. 29 and injured more often than not. He isn’t best 22 and if he’s injured all the time he ain’t reliable depth either. I don’t know that he’s really the guy you keep around just to teach the kids a few tricks.

But yes. We can add to the list via draft and free agency without giving away our best players for effectively peanuts.

Top 10 picks are about 60-40 gonna work out to be a 100-120 game role player, and probably 15% chance they turn into something really good that wins BOG medals and AA jackets. Better with Top 5, and better some years than others. Haven’t heard a thing about this years draft being much good, other than Harley Reid.

If you want a good chance of replacing what you already have without necessarily improving the list at all, the price is probably two firsts or a top 5 pick. Odds on we don’t improve the list, coz we rarely do. Get a skinny flanker or injury prone tall instead 😒 but at a normal club that’s probably where it sits.

If he wanted to leave via trade a year ago it’d be something to think about. This year it’d require us to match, which I don’t think we would.

Best case scenario is if we lose him and get something that we actually need of a similar calibre in return (as Lloyd suggests), but list management overestimates their own ability with a top 10 pick and the marketing potential of pick ~7 is enough to keep their jobs anyway, so ultimately that’s all they’d need to be satisfied.

yeah DERO- you didn’t even think of all that before you posted did you?

If we were to trade one of the best clearance players in the comp I'd want more than Ben McKay

He says we are not too bad in that area and can afford to lose one of our top 2 mids. Last year he was saying our midfield was no good.

I'm convinced that no former Essendon champion should have anything to do with the club anymore. What's it done in the past 20.

Spot on. Yuck that feels weird

But really they’re only right occasionally, bit like a broken clock.

Do not flame me. Just posting the story.

It's not that absurd of an idea for mine.

Are we better off matching an offer and forcing a trade - or just letting him go?

If we were to hypothetically sign McKay, let Parish walk and finish 12th, we end up with (as far as I understand it) -

Out: Parish
In: McKay, Compensation Pick (8)

And we have our own pick 7.

It'd be nice to just have a set and forget full back for 5+ years.

I also get that Parish is a very good footballer, but we have who appears a ready made replacement in Hobbs.

Think people are misreading Lloyd's quote when they say things like "I'd want more than McKay". The quote is:

“Do they say, ‘We can let go of a midfielder, because we’re not too bad in that area’, and can we go after not someone that’s available like a (Ben) McKay, but to a club that desperately needs a midfielder and get a centre-half back?”

Lloyd's saying use the asset of Parish to go to a team and get a gun key defender (Not McKay).

Not my opinion on the matter, just clarifying the quote.

Our compensation would be affected if we just "signed" McKay instead of trading for him. We could trade our compensation pick for McKay and Port's first. So essentially we'd be losing Parish for McKay and a teens pick probably

Oh yep, that makes a lot more sense. And a little less desirable.

I know he says some dumb things, but the premise of this idea is far from his worst imo.

I'm completely on board with it. Our midfield mix doesn't work. It's Parish or Shiel for me, and the reason I'd prefer keeping Shiel is because Parish is worth more on the trade table.

i've gone beyond that.
I'm now in the boat of neither.

Merrett, Setterfield, Hobbs, Caldwell, Tsatas, with Stringer/Perkins rotating in
Langford, Martin, Duz on wings.

and i'm starting my obsessions with players we likely won't draft (i.e this years Sheezel, O'Driscoll, Matt Johnson).

If we can land Archer Reid & Tholstrup, i like the balance that brings with a good, young x-factor forward plus what looks like the best KPF that isn't already spoken for.

Also if we move on Shiel and Parish we can target someone like Hollands, Dow, Robertson, Bytel, Fiorini, Flanders to not leave us with a lack of depth.

If I was Parish I'd be keen to leave.. to go somewhere and feel wanted.

I imagine being a top 5 pick who is constantly in the top few disposal winners in the comp and still being a whipping boy would not feel great.

I mean I am willing to pile on to some degree... I just reckon any decent AFL player would be up for a second chance.

I think the percentage of people who don't want him are inflated on this board. Which I doubt he reads :)

They'd be breathing a sigh of relief that he is out injured because they now may not have to work as hard on their arguments on downgrading the relevance of selection in the All Australian side.
