I disagree

Were a better side for having Parish in the team over Tsatas

That would be a negative effect for the next few years

Only responding to what i originally quoted in that Parish wont be in his prime in 3-5 years so we can not pay up that extra 50-100k. If the case then where does that leave elder statesman in the 3 i mentioned when clubs enquire about them
But people would disagree with you on the affect of Parish leaving. They arent happy to see him walk because of anything happening in 3-5 years. In regards to your hypothetical of Wright, Langford and Merrett being enquired about you'd have to wait til it actually happened and decide, but as it stands all 3 contracted and more than happy to keep all 3.

Parish is a 170 game player heading into 2024 in the prime years of his career

Tsatas at most is a 20 game player heading into year 3

You mentioned him walking doesnt affect the short term prospects.

Parish, Merrett and McGrath on my trade table.

Replace them with guys who can do a job, James Jordan, Bailey Williams and Eli Hollands, then go hard at the draft.

Dev Robertson as well if he's gettable.

If we offered Merrett to a contender and offered to pay his contract we'd get a fair return.

Langford, Ridley, Redman, Wright, Setterfield and Draper lead the rebuild.

Yes I'm likely crazy but slowly adding piece by piece is getting us nowhere.

Yeah because i think what he does can be covered by what we have, what we bring in during the offseason and the way we structure the best 23

Yep that’s 100% crazy pills.

Merrett is a good leader and has done wonders this season. He’s a player you use scaffold the rebuild

I wouldn't expect him to stick around for a rebuild, I'd ask him if he wanted to leave.

My proposals come from me projecting what I think of the list, I think we are further away than most. I'm not even sure on Draper and Wright as long term options.

gutting our midfield in prep for a rebuild is crazy talk. merrett has given so much heart and soul for the club, trading him (after being named captain) is absurd

Maybe but trying to win a flag with the same players that continue to fail seems absurd to me as well.
keep our best and get rid of dead weight, much better than getting rid of a first season captain, very kim hughes-esque, scapegoating the captain instead of dealing with the internal issues

Dead weight out does nothing, the best 22 stays the same, if adding McKay and a top 10 pick is all we do then we're in for more of the same.

Also I know trading Zach is crazy.

Lyons just isn't all that great and is the wrong side of 30.

Harmes not a bad option, a good size and still 'only' 27 so could be a good body to protect the younger blokes, especially if Parish goes.

Age isn't really important, if they can lumber around and yell at guys to get in the right position it'll be a big help. You bring them in for their leadership, not their direct footballing impact.

Turning over the bottom 3-4 on the list and replacing them with AFL standard guys will help in the short-term, but we still lack the high-end talent IMO.

I don't mind bringing in some outsiders to contribute to leadership and development. High end talent will take a while to accumulate. You normally only get one or two bites at the first round where the top end talent is normally found, and the odds of finding top quality talent outside the first round are pretty slim (and often require years of development before they're ready for AFL).

Let him walk and take the pick has always been the best option. He is not worth what he wants.
Quick question. If Parish decides to leave as a free agent does that effect any compensation you would receive if you bought in Mackay?

Bringing in Mackay as a FA would dilute any FA compensation we got from Parish leaving.

If either of those two leave their respective clubs via a trade there's no impact on the FA compensation.

Nth wouldn't stop McKay from exercising his free agency rights given they will be getting pick 2. If essendon don't offer Parish the contract he is asking and another club does it makes it interesting.

Well Norf would certainly be shooing him out the door if it looked like they'd get band 1 compo for him. But if we offered him enough to give Norf band 1 compo and then Parish left we'd probably get nothing for Parish and in return get a KPD who can't kick.

So I think that would be why we may have withdrawn our offer to McKay; if Parish is going elsewhere we really want to maximise our own compensation, and there's probably enough AFL-ish standard KPDs we can get that won't dilute that compensation.

The benefit of moving on Parish has nothing to do with the compenstion.

It would be an acknowledgement that everything we have been trying to do since 2017 is wrong.

That and freeing up a best 22 spot in the midfield is worth more to Essendon than a first round pick.

i agree with this but its more like 2004. people like to revisionise the hird era, but really that midfield was pathetic and consistently found out under pressure. they couldnt run, and hird didn't play runners on the list.

bomber designed a gameplan to compensate that got us close to a final win but that would have been pyrrhic and is irrelevant.
