Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Just had it confirmed that they had to put a hard tag on him
I thought Stephens looked average in the first quarter but worked his way into the game really well. By the 4th he was running rings around much of the opposition. Be interested if the hard tag was from first bounce or as he started cutting loose. If it was the latter, the tagger shouldn't get paid because he got torched.

To be fair, I think tagging at the lower level is significantly harder and typically less effective at the lower level than it is in the AFL. In the seniors, someone given a tagging role will be studying their designated opponent in excruciating detail and practising to do it for most of the week leading up to it. In the reserves, someone is often given a tagging job at half time of a game if someone's getting off the chain, and they end up getting sent to a player they might've seen highlights of at best.

It was when he started cutting loose

I've long wanted to see Stephens on the inside, but I don't know where there's a spot for him.
Papley, Parker, gulden?

I think Gulden is a better winger than Stephens, Parker we've all moaned about, and Papley really shouldn't be in the mids much. Worked against Richmond, and Richmond suck.

I don't disagree with any of that, I'd definitely be okay with a straight swap of Gulden & Stephens taking each other's roles. I don't think Horse would be okay with it as it would mean potentially taking opportunities away from his main quartet to give some to Stephens. He was willing to do this when it came to Gulden, but Gulden is Gulden. I don't think Horse is quite as enamoured with Stephens as he is with Gulden.

He also so stubbornly persists with the Parker/Warner/Papley combination at centre bounces. Since the GF, when that combination absolutely killed us, I've watched them pretty carefully when used together, and they just work together horribly. It's easily our worst centre bounce combination, so breaking that up and maybe trying someone different like Stephens with each of them might be a good thing.

Can i double agree

I would bring stephens back, at least he gives chase and works hard.

I am not sure our current coaching group will ever get much out of him

I think the Stephens criticism is a bit harsh. He's shown enough last year to suggest he has a long career ahead of him. Does seem to be a bit of a confidence player, but I think as he continues to develop his game he'll become a very solid player for us.
He’ll become a good player.

But he hasn’t re-signed.

Good chance he’s not a Swan next year.
