Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

He's the perfect trade bait. As much as I don't mind him and think he'll be a solid wingman, jmac and gulden will be our wingers. Commit to it and move on to fill other needs.

Funny thing is, a number of our players starred in roles that they aren't playing in.

Stephens and Florent playing as an inside mid

Campbell as a HFF

Blakey, Mills and Heeney playing as mids (all started out of position, only one is a mid).

Because where you played as a junior isn’t necessarily indicative of where you’ll play at AFL level

Unless they are a KPP, most juniors with talent are played in the mids at junior level. It doesn't mean they will end up there in senior footy.

True, but it does call into question the “you can’t have too many mids” theory.
Mids often become small defenders/half backs if they don’t make it as midfielders, sometimes half forwards or pockets.

Our history shows that we have had far more success in drafting mids and having them end up in defence than taking junior half backs who have almost all failed (maybe all actually?).

So never have too mids from a drafting perspective is probably right as they are often in the mids because they have more talent than the smaller defenders at junior level. Just don’t expect them all to end up there I guess.

Dyl was OK. Some of his disposal by foot a bit iffy and he did drop off a tackle or 2 - Frankston had some big units going through the mids.

I thought he must have got like 4 kicks in the vfl after reading here

He honestly wasn't that bad, found the ball, spread to provide an option all game.

He made a few players and was struggling to lay a tackle though, but that's really it.

Personally I think his in next week

Exactly. It wasn't as if we didn't try Florent as a mid for example, he got moved to defence because he wasn't impacting enough in the middle. Stephens seems too skinny to play as a full-time onballer, whereas Heeney's skillset seems best up forward.

Seen him run up and down the wing

He didn’t get ignored he is just not good enough unfortunately

he has played some good games at times though, so he can do it
