Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Fox had Flanders too. Stephens at 8, Serong at 10. Twomey even mentioned there was little difference between Serong and Stephens.
Except that Serong was a swans supporter and far less go home factor about him. That alone should have put him ahead at our pick if there was little difference between them and the reason I will forever be pissed that we passed on him. It was a golden opportunity that we pissed up the wall.

I agree with you for the most part. I’m disappointed that Stephens didnt work out but at the time we had no good outside players. Florent wasnt good on the wing, neither was whoevrr else we tried there like Bell or whatever I cant remember exact players.

It just so turned out that JMac, Gulden, and now Campbell are much better kicks and can cover just as much ground as Stephens. In the 2s Corner might end up ahead of Stephens too. Yep Stephens was a blunder but there was some merit and need behind the pick.

But yes the narrative that we pick up scraps elsewhere and turn em into gems is bullshit and covers up what is simply not a sustainable plan. For the most part the scraps are still scraps. Eg thurlow, lewis forget his last name

I copped s**t the saying Ladhams and Hickey were god awful over two months ago. Our ruck situation is abyssmal. We should just play McAndrew. we arent going anywhere with Ladhams. Hickey is done.
Stephens didn't work ##########################

He's had his chances which he hasn't nailed. He'll likely get another chance because of injury/form to others but it might be his final chance with us unless he nails it. There's a footy player in him at AFL level imo but I don't think he'll find the opportunity/position with us. He might need to go to a lowly team where there's less pressure on spots & more opportunities.

Sheldrick was interviewed several times by Freo (Pick 21) and Geelong (Pick 24).

He was a rapid riser up the draft boards late in the year & people only say “reach” because he didn’t appear in early phantom drafts.

Stephens might still turn out to be a very good AFL footballer. Personally, I hope he re-signs. He’s the type that could just have a break-out game, gain confidence from it & it’ll all click.

I feel he was unfairly dropped several times & it set back his development.

There were a few clubs interested yes, which would be why we went "early". However he didn't appear in the top 25 even in the latest phantom drafts. Twomey didn't have him in his Top 30, ESPN had him at 35 etc.

Anyway my point was really about those who thought we reached for Stephens, and are willing to play the hindsight card.

I'd re-sign him too. If he's willing to stay, why not.

Thomey who gives a f what he thinks , you people are conned by journo's

Were you in the interviews with them? There obviously wasn't a go home concern with Stephens, and he justified that by re-signing despite outside interest. He wanted to earn his spot. For all we know Serong could have interviewed badly, wasn't seen as big of a need.

As I said, I wanted Serong. But I'm not going to moan about it as much as others who think drafting is easy.

Because they are the best guide we have unless you spend thousands of hours watching potential draftees. I don't go by one in particular, you can look at a bunch to get a sense.

Feel free to come up with your own rankings before drafts and we'll see how you go.

Not interested i leave it to the club and trust them to do the right thing and once they do nothing can be done about it

Is 15th on the ladder a lowly team ?

I seriously doubt that they spend 'thousands of hours' watching potential draftees.

Their lists are based on what recruiting managers sometimes tell them.

A random number generator would be about as accurate. I might actually make one.

I didn't say they did, but they would watch more, and be in contact with scouts/list managers. They give a guide as to who the top 20, 30, 40 will likely be. They get a lot closer than what us randoms without the patience and free time to analyse everything ourselves, would get. Some are pretty accurate.

It's also relevant when you have people making claims about reaches or not picking best available. What else are they talking about, if not the guides and commentary we get from media. Or just speaking from hindsight, which any armchair critic can do. So it's fair to use the same measurements to show they aren't remembering these rankings that well.

Peopl,e forget how good he was leading in to last years finals and that goal against the Demons
He was ok. Over arching because he was better than his previous showings and we all wanted to see him play well.

The thing that I noticed, even in his good games, is he tends to find himself in no man's land too often up and down the wing. The only time he was cracking in was during stoppages along the boundary. Compare that to jmac who knows how to attract the ball into open space and find overlap. The odd time Stephens was involved in good link up play I was always pleasantly shocked and would tense up when he would be on the end of it, even his better passages seem a forced struggle.
