Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Dylan Stephens
DOB: 08 January 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #5, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Red Cliffs (Vic)/Walkerville (SA)/St Peter's College (SA)/Norwood (SANFL)

With Lloyd out this week, will he get a reprieve?

Personally I'd love to see Rankin get a shot at it with the season shot.

I'd like to see Dyl given a chance at AFL level on ball. I recognise his disposal by foot is a bit hit and miss but his ability to find the ball and burst away from the contest has come along nicely at VFL level. I think we have missed this with Chad injured.

As a general comment, with the season all but gone, I think it's an opportunity to have a good look at guys like Stephens and Gould in different roles before we stamp their papers.

Club have moved on it seems

Cut ya losses

Pick 5 * me the recruiting team

Being hard to attack players we can’t afford to waste first round picks

Worse case we need something back imo, otherwise its a disaster.

May as well play him now, seems he went well in the reserves

Fear not Punts.
I'm sure the club is looking for the next cheap disvovery lurking on another club list somewhere, feeling unwanted or at their career crossroad for whatever reason. Too risky elsewhere but no risk in Sydney.

Someone like Paddy or Francis. You know, that feel good story so that the Vic biased commentators during games can rant on about what a fantastic club we are at finding these 'gems' & reigniting their careers.
What a great club for getting senior games into a player no one else wanted. A player that fits our inclusive club.

I'm eagerly anticipating what we have in store next.

HEY RECRUITERS!
JUST .ARCKEN PICK THE BEST AVAILABLE PLAYER AT PICK 3 OR 4 THIS DRAFT & PASS ON THE SHIT PICKS.

DO YOUR JOB.

Oh! And Ladhams?
What a disaster chase we made.
A disaster.

People talk about Stephens as if he was some kind of reach. He was considered Top 8 or 9 by most guides, talked about for our pick 5 as well. He wasn't someone we plucked from the projected 2nd round.

I wanted Serong (later than Stephens in some media mock drafts), but I'm not going to play Captain Hindsight and hang the club for it. Drafting is an inexact science, we seem to do it well compared to most, that's pretty much all we can ask for. Inability to rate any talls in the last 2 national drafts aside.

If anything Sheldrick was a bigger reach and I'm not hearing much angst about that these days.

Anyway, he's still on the list with 7 games to play, I'll consider it over if/when he leaves.

GOOD POST , BUT WHAT IS THE TERM REACH ?

Where a player is projected to get picked up much later, but a club "reaches out" to their predicted position and selects them much earlier.

Sheldrick was predicted mid to late 20s at the earliest, we reached out and got him in the teens.

Twomey had us picking up Flanders as our first choice but noted Stephens and Lachie Ash as alternatives.

And interesting Adelaide at pick 6 Stephens was also mentioned.

I agree with you for the most part. I’m disappointed that Stephens didnt work out but at the time we had no good outside players. Florent wasnt good on the wing, neither was whoevrr else we tried there like Bell or whatever I cant remember exact players.

It just so turned out that JMac, Gulden, and now Campbell are much better kicks and can cover just as much ground as Stephens. In the 2s Corner might end up ahead of Stephens too. Yep Stephens was a blunder but there was some merit and need behind the pick.

But yes the narrative that we pick up scraps elsewhere and turn em into gems is bullshit and covers up what is simply not a sustainable plan. For the most part the scraps are still scraps. Eg thurlow, lewis forget his last name

I copped shit the saying Ladhams and Hickey were god awful over two months ago. Our ruck situation is abyssmal. We should just play McAndrew. we arent going anywhere with Ladhams. Hickey is done.

Fox had Flanders too. Stephens at 8, Serong at 10. Twomey even mentioned there was little difference between Serong and Stephens.

Sheldrick was interviewed several times by Freo (Pick 21) and Geelong (Pick 24).

He was a rapid riser up the draft boards late in the year & people only say “reach” because he didn’t appear in early phantom drafts.

Stephens might still turn out to be a very good AFL footballer. Personally, I hope he re-signs. He’s the type that could just have a break-out game, gain confidence from it & it’ll all click.

I feel he was unfairly dropped several times & it set back his development.
