Re: #30: Paddy Ryder - Officially signs 4-year deal

It's been crazy that we have manage to keep our team together despite the introduction of GWS + GC.

Congratulations to Paddy and the club.

Re: #30: Paddy Ryder - Officially signs 4-year deal

Why the hell would anyone leave the best club on Earth to go and get your ass whooped everyweek in the boonies..

Give me big games on the MCG, access to multi million dollar endorsement deals and the chance to win a grand final any day..

Also it is not like we are paying chump change.. what is 200K when you make more than that with the EFC brand attached to your image anyway??

Still awesome job so far keeping the list together and happy and building.. awesomely awesome..

Stanton and Davey are pretty much my only 'must signs' left.. so very happy

It is?

The serious clubs haven't really lost anyone to the expansion clubs, just the Mickey Mouse ones.

Geelong lost Ablett.

I wouldn't regard Geelong as a "Mickey Mouse" club! Except if you're attempting to blow another one of Bundy_28's gaskets, that is.

You're right though, Ablett aside, Footscray and Adelaide have been clearly the hardest hit.

Re: #30: Paddy Ryder - Officially signs 4-year deal

Winning, it does wonders for a playing group, a club, and supporters. This would be the most buoyant the club has been since Paddy was drafted. If he loved it before why would he want to leave now?

Had a big grin on my face when this was announced last night. Great news.

Could tell when interviewing Hird that he feels plenty of man love for Paddy.

Freo and Melbourne, too. One could argue that losing Palmer was a plus for Freo, though.

I think the Ablett case is an (or the) extraordinary one. It doesn't seem to be any great coincidence though that the clubs that have lost a player to the expansion clubs have either lost their coach that year or within a year. Club stability plays a huge part.

Rischitelli and Brennan. Power was retiring though.

Being at the players' sponsors' night this week, I can tell you that there's a real sense of excitement at the club at the moment. It's not just the thrill of a few wins, but a genuine belief and that intangible feel that something special is brewing. Makes me want to donate more to the flight plan (srs).

Re: #30: Paddy Ryder - Officially signs 4-year deal

After the dismal game on Saturday night, did anyone else notice that Paddy seemed to be very upset as he walked off?

He looked sooooo gutted.

I thought it was a good sign from a player that some people say is too lackadaisical.

I hope he and all the others bring it like there is no tomorrow against the Swans.

Still keen? ;)

Re: #30: Paddy Ryder - Showing more emotion in 2012

There was an incident during the Sydney game last year when Heppell backed into a marking contest and got knocked arse over tit. Can't remember who the Sydney player was, and there was absolutely nothing untowards about it, but Paddy was noticably upset and was prepared for remonstration. Always stands out in my memory because it seemed so unusual. Not the case anymore.

Reprimand for tripping

"Patrick Ryder, Essendon, has been charged with a level one tripping offence against Dan Nicholson, Melbourne, during the first quarter of the Round 10 match between Essendon and Melbourne, played at the MCG on Saturday June 2, 2012.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 66 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has an existing bad record of one match suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 10 per cent to 88 demerit points and a reprimand. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 66 points towards his future record."

Haha, yeah. I'm not massively upset by the loss. In comparative terms, it was an improvement on 2011, which is all Hirdy asked for :p

Is he now officially a forward/ruck?

Still our best ruck by far in my view, but almost becoming too good a forward to spend much time in there. Bellchambers will likely take most of the rucking, though Ryder will be especially effective when he goes in there.

Really? What I've taken out of the preseason games is that TBell has really developed well up forward. To the point that they could share it 50/50 or split it 40/60 with either capable of being the primary ruck. They both offer different things at both positions.

Before the preseason games I'd thought that TBell being a bigger body is more sustainable as ruckman and Ryder's talents makes him a far more damaging forward. While this is true in theory Ryder does lose intensity during the periods of waiting that a forward must do and TBell occupying the goal square allows Crameri and Hurley to push high offers a different structure to the team.

I'm still holding out faint hope that Ryder's leap, pace, hands below his knees, kicking skills and ability to play in all thirds of the ground that if he pulled his finger out and played with intensity consistently that he could be rated in his prime as a top 10 player in the league. That he's actually capable of that this year.

I look forward to his battles with Kruezer and Nic Nat over the next 5 - 10 years.

I also still hold out faint hope that in the future that TBell can get his fitness up to a level that allows him to ruck out 80% of a game and Ryder is given absolute free reign off a forward flank and the relief for TBell is shared among Ryder and Daniher.

In two years time "talls" of:

..... Carlisle Pears
...... Hurley .....
TBell/Watson
Ryder/Crameri
Daniher

Is pretty exciting. However, I still think it comes down to Ryder, i.e. he's the cream that makes very good into game destroyingly exciting.

That could easily be

..... Carlisle Pears
...... Hurley .....
TBell/Watson
Ryder/Gumby/Crameri
Daniher

or

..... Carlisle Pears
...... Hooker.....
TBell/Watson
Ryder/Hurley/Crameri
Daniher

Personally I could see this team pushing for a flag in 2014:

Harding Carlisle Pears
Hibberd Hurley Hibberd
Stanton Goddard Heppell
TBell/Watson/Zaka
Jetta Ryder Crameri
Davey Daniher winderlich
Myers Hocking Howlett Kavanagh
