Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

We had Graham and Prestia out in stints. We’ve never fielded our best midfield all year. Who goes out when all the cavalry is back? Also Higgins looks like a regular fixture who is in direct competition.

Not to the worst thing to keep Higgins hungry like Short last year.

It’s a long season especially for a first year kid. Conca is probably slightly ahead in most areas at their current stages of their careers.

Cats, Gws and the bummers had a go at run and gun through the corridor.
And they all got through us.
Conca and Graham didnt play against two of those...
I reckon I’d pick Conca ahead of Higgo for finals.
It looks like it might come down to a choice between those two, and I would go the same way. I suspect the match committee would too.

He certainly deserves to, and I've always been a fan. But 3 midfielders coming back in means 3 out from last night. Baker obviously, Lloyd probably but played well last night. Conca, Higgins and Graham all deserve games. Butler looks to be too far back almost now. Interesting times.
To get our best 22:
In: Cotchin, Prestia, Lambert, Astbury, Butler
Out: Garthwaite, Baker, Lloyd and I reckon Higgins and Ellis at this point.

We are currently playing 8 defenders where normally we play 7. Rance, Astbury, Grimes, Broad, Vlastuin, Houli, Short, Ellis. One is likely to miss.

We are also playing one less forward (Townsend) for an extra midfielder.

There’s a bit to go before we understand who is ready to go , I don’t believe butler will come straight back in , he ll play a vfl final . It may come down to Higgo v conca and that will be a tough decision. If conca put in another performance like last night next week , he d go along way to firming a spot.
The VFL has a final during the AFL bye week. Hopefully Buts is right for that. He's important.

Ellis would be stiff. Playing more wing last few weeks because as you state, one to many defenders. Thought MacIntosh might be in the gun, but the last two few weeks has been very good. Maybe it will come down to injuries.

There will be more than one very unlucky player.

Cotch, Prestia, Asrbury and Lambert will all definitely be back in. I reckon Conca will keep his spot - gives us some midfield clearance capability. :thumbsu:

Butler is no certainty to get back in just due to timing. He'll miss the last game and bye, then might have to come back through VFL in first week of finals. If we win the first final, club will be reluctant to change team like they were last year. If he's in contention, likely to be between him, Castagna and Higgins for 2 spots.

Lloyd, Baker and Garthwaite will all go out next week. Leaves a least one more to come out for Lambert - probably Kmac or Broad most in the gun. Ellis has been good since he came back from being dropped.

jack graham might need a good game against the dogs as well, like a few has been good but hasnt set the world on fire, thought he has been poor in last 2.

I would pick Higgins over Conca every day of the week. Higgins has been very important recently. He has the ability to create goals from nothing whether it's a quick off the ground or crumbling a pack front and center. He is a football genius.

Conca's disposal is questionable, he is a hard nut and attacks the contest, but he is a big injury risk coming off limited fitness base this year.

I'd also play Butler before Conca. Conca has been proven not to be essential to our finals campaigns.

He would want to be producing better than what he did on friday night , 14 touches and 2 tackles in a game of bruise free footy where he received zero attention and with the big 3 Lambert,Prestia,Cotchin out he should of had more output.
Not his best game

Don’t think higgins will be dropped but he’s probably in that last 2-3 players in our 22 that are near the edge along with Ellis, and Macca. Going to be tough and if Butler gets back then 2 will need to make way

Butler is best 22 if fit. If we are trying to win a premiership then we should throw him in the first final because we will want him firing by GF day. Slight risk for the first final but worth it imo considering how well we're going.

conker on a bad fur day > his butler

Conca has the added bonus of being one of our best defensive and clearance players in a team that has had clearance issues all year and defensive issues through the midfield for the last little while. Higgins is going to be a great player but his role is more replaceable which puts his position in more danger. If it comes down to it, I actually think we'll see Higgins shifted back forward into Butler's position, at least until Butler has a few games under his belt.

By the time finals come around, Butler won't have played any football for about 8 weeks. Will need a game or two in the VFL. He is coming from a long way back.

A fit and in form Butler is best 22.
But we might be playing him with the hope he can produce his best, I dont want to be taking a punt rather than making a deliberate decision based on the imformation at hand.

The last time we did that in a final was picking Conca and Griffith.

I’d change it up, I’d keep Garthwaite in- can use him everywhere, I’d keep in Lloyd( physical, can kick and use the ball well and is versatile) and Higgins(same except his set shots are bad) shuffle the team a little because a rolling stone gathers no moss!!

it’s gonna be interesting with all these players on the verge of putting their hand up.
Out is George (I’m in the camp that think he is a one trick pony, baker who is not ready yet, and who ever is not fit to play.

Yeah I agree. It's probably McIntosh/Conca. Macca was good on Friday night but Conca gives us clearance help and is better defensively. Might depend who we play against in terms of their game style....
