His facebook profile lists his interests as : Beer, ciggies and women (couldnt help but stalk) hmm

Good to see Brodie Smith likes "You're a top bloke. LOL JK, you're Victorian". Although he might now need to delete the group "Period pains... try picking Richard Tambling over Lance Franklin" from his profile haha.

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

He also joined this group. 'hi im a boy; food, wanking, xbox, sex and football is my life:)' Good to see the lad has his priorities right, we all love a good bat!

Used to go to school with him, he was a pretty nice guy and I can remember him dominating every single sport, from table tennis to footy.

Like hearing this - he sounds like a great get for his football, but it's nice to hear he's a great bloke as well.

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

Thought I'd summarise Lyons' stats in the TAC Cup this year. Worth noting that he also played two VFL matches midyear, one of which he was 4th best for his team (in a 7 goal loss).

Jarryd played 17 games in the TAC Cup this year for Sandringham. You can view the stats here if you wish: http://www.sportingpulse.com/team_i...ent=1-118-10447-102874-9815583&ocompID=102895 - or I have written them up below. Afterwards I'll include some averages. I particularly like the large numbers of handball receives and tackles - indicates someone willing to bust their gut and demand the ball from whoever has it :thumbsu:

Sandringham vs Northern Knights - 15 disposals (10 effective), 11 kicks (7 effective), 4 handballs (3 effective), 0 marks (0 contested), 6 tackles, 4 frees for, 0 frees against, 5 handball receives. No score. Not in bests.

Sandringham vs North Ballarat Rebels - 36 disposals (18 effective), 17 kicks (6 effective), 19 handballs (12 effective), 6 marks (3 contested), 3 tackles, 0 frees for, 0 frees against, 14 handball receives. Score 3.1. 1st best.

Sandringham vs Western Jets - 28 disposals (17 effective), 12 kicks (7 effective), 16 handballs (10 effective), 1 mark (0 contested), 2 tackles, 1 free for, 0 frees against, 9 handball receives. Scored 2.2. 2nd best.

So that was a lot of numbers! What do they all mean?

Firstly, Jarryd averaged 21 disposals a match, with 63% disposal efficiency. His disposal efficiency is relatively poor, though this is probably a symptom of a lower comp, where you're relying on your target to give you a decent lead, or your teammate to give you the ball at the right time. I'd love to see some figures on what is the average disposal efficiency in the TAC Cup. Certainly Jarryd's kicking efficiency is a concern - only 54% of his kicks were effective over the year.

Jarryd averaged 7 handball receives, which is a very nice number indeed, given he spent time a fair bit of time up forward as the year went on :thumbsu: On the other hand, he took relatively few marks, averaging 2.5 a match, and averaged less than one contested mark per match. Despite this he managed to score a number of goals, so presumably these were from swooping on loose balls, or the aforementioned handball receives.

Jarryd scored 25 goals in his 17 games, though it is worth noting that his time up forward reportedly increased later in the season, and 21 of those goals came in his final 10 games. In that period he scored multiple goals 8 times. His goalkicking efficiency is well within acceptable range at 70% (23 goals to 10 behinds, ignoring his 2 goals haul against Murray because the behinds were not reported).

Jarryd averaged 3.5 tackles per match, which seems a fine result to me, and averaged one free kick per match. One interesting thing is that he was almost never pinged by the umpire - he only gave away two free kicks for the entire season. Presumably this is testament to his evasive skills, and good tackling technique.

Jarryd made the bests in 10 of his 17 games. His aggregate bests score was 37, which was the 17th highest result in the TAC Cup.

Well, anyway. That was a good waste of an hour :p

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

I know this lad very well. Great skills, footy smarts, courageous and an absolute ripper kid. But please be realistic. Pick 61 is what it is. Jarryd is a bit of late bloomer, only 1 year at TAC level, no Vic metro selection and at this stage not quite in the ‘elite’ junior class. May not play senior AFL footy next year but with a bit of luck he will be a gem for your club. I wish him well. A great kid from a great school (De La Salle Malvern) and a great junior club (the mighty St Peters JFC East Bentleigh). Your club has done well. A bargain at 61.

Thanks for that Mr Rooster 24. It is always great to get some of the personal input and knowledge. Cheers mate!

Very much appreciate your input mate :thumbsu: Have you spoken to him since being drafted? What's his thoughts on it all? Is he a hard worker?

Yes I have. He is very excited about going to Adelaide and, while the obvious preference was to stay in Melbourne for family reasons, he is more than happy to be heading interstate. The Crows showed the most interest in him and have been totally professional. Club officials arrived yesterday to collect him and he starts training today! A very hard worker and a quiet, humble kid. We all hope he does well. Adelaide seem like a ripper club (that from a long suffering St Kilda supporter) and the family are comfortable that he is in very good hands.

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

Lyons was very lasy as a young kid as most are but once he realized he wasnt going to make cricket he turned to the AFL.very bold risk at #61 but can pay off,he will need to improve to cut it at the elite. p.s can take a hanger

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

I might have missed this being mentioned in this thread, but Rendell after the draft stated that he wasn't so disappointed in trading away #50 now because he would have taken Lyons with that pick anyway. Alex Browne, who was strongly linked to us at #61 went to Collingwood at #48. So maybe Daffey actually had a bit of decent inside information there.

Thanks for the input... I honestly dont think any one expects Lyons to play AFL in his first year. I would love to see him play the year with a strong SANFL club and taste a bit of finals action. Problem is you would think at least 2 maybe 3 of the Port boys selected will get picked up in the SANFL draft before him. Hopefully most rookie selections from Port and Crows will come locally otherwise if another 4 or 5 mature interstaters get picked up he may well find himself at my mob, Souths, which will be a bloody tough gig for a young half forward flanker. Would love to see him at Norwood with the great man as his coach:thumbsu:

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

I thought the Crows may have thrown up an interview with Jarryd by now but can't see anything on their website.

I know they probably don't want to hit him too soon with all of this and I would understand if he wants to concentrate on the big move but as he was only 1 of 2 draftees I want to see and hear from him on his reaction to becoming a Crow and what it means for him to play AFL under NC and his first impressions of the club and the town.

I think I can do the interview for him.

'Yeh, I'm absolutely stoked to be drafted. Adelaide looks great, I met all the players today and they were all really helpful and I can't wait to settle in and get into training.'

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

Would have flown over on Sunday or Monday, joined the boys on camp and will be returning with them for Thursday training when we'll see an interview.

No, it was just on very quickly on 5AA after the draft. Couldn't have been much longer than a minute. Rendell didn't have much to say at that point and just kinda mocked the whole thing.

"You must be pleased"
"Well, I think everyone says that now"

He said he does go for the local boy if its 50/50 but didn't say whether it affected his choice of Smith.

That was about it.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, I recorded it and put it in the draft thread at the time. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

Jarryd was interviewed on 5AA yesterday if anyone is able to find the link. There was also an article in Saturday's Advertiser detailing his diary of last week if that is online.

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

we may not expect him to play this year, but he does.

good on him

I don't really see any reason why he couldn't, he's already of a reasonable size, so assuming he's good enough and doesn't get injured like the rest of our 1st year players tend to do, he's every chance to get a game or two I think.

forgive me for laughing but i couldnt control my cynicism - and nothing personal against Lyons - you can virtually substitute any 1st/2nd year player's name - unless of course we have a million injuries

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

Reading the article on AFC website - I like the kid's confidence. Why not set a goal of getting a few games? He knows nothing of past culture/decisions - just wants to get stuck in and see what happens. Good luck to him!

Re: Draft Pick #61 2010 - Jarryd Lyons - Post your thoughts here!

Looks to have that ability to wait just a fraction of a second longer to dispose of the ball in order to ensure he hits a taraget, very similar to Stiffy in that regard. Hope he gets a game or two.
