He's a hell of a lot quicker than Soldo and that was the preferred setup for most of the season.
He played on midget backs on the weekend, although he did play well.
Paul Salmon was the last super tall forward to make it unless they are quick and agile like the King bros. Ottens, but he was also a smooth mover for his size. 2m Peter is going okay, McKay, but he is quick, Sampson is not.

20m sprint means not much for the big fellows, they do it in half a dozen strides. 3.08 puts Ryan in the above average speed, which he isn't as the two don't necessarily translate.
Harry McKay on a lead in the AFL is difficult to stop because once he gets into stride he is pretty quick.
Ryan is not slow like Soldo but is not really a lead and mark type.
Plus Carlton only have one of his type, we have Lynch who is similar.
It was a disaster when we tried to use Nank like that in tandem.
It means he's quicker over 20m.
He's competitive, a good mark and a good kick. He's probably a better ruck option than Balta and Miller and a better forward option than Soldo and at least equal to Miller. Reckon he could cause some headaches with the 3rd or 4th best defender. Plus it means Miller or Broad can slot into Vlastuins role. Can't be any worse than Soldo or Nank as the 2nd ruck which we've gone with for the majority of the season.

Like Miller in the ruck? Or Nank forward? How is it any different to playing Sonsie in the middle? Or Cumberland forward? Fwd/ruck is Samsons natural position, it's not really an experiment.
Remind me how the experiment out of nowhere of Townsend forward went a few years back on the eve of finals

Honestly, it's like we want to change for the sake of change even when we got the change we asked for to begin with? It's a never ending death loop.
If you think Samson Ryan is the answer to the finals in a few weeks time then you're asking the wrong question.
Good on Samson for playing well but the bottom of the ladder VFL team is not exactly on par with an away AFL elimination final.
He is all of those things, although Miller might be a better forward option the longer he plays there because he is as agile and quick as most medium sized players and is going pretty well in that role. But certainly Ryan is a better ruck/forward option right now, although he is not Nank like who played like a ruck rover on the weekend. But I think in tandem with Lynch and Jack up forward Miller is the better option because with Ryan we would be too slow.
I thought Gibcus was reasonable considering how badly out of form he has been. Got to good spots defensively to mark but just dropped them so I would bet he will bounce back this week. He could play Vlastuin's role. I think we can cover Vlastuin with wings playing a bit more defensively (they do anyway). Our backs have some good intercept marking abilty, Dalta, Broad, Gibcus, Tarrant, enough to cover the Hawks.
Ryan is a developing prospect for next year I think.
It means a hell of a lot for a leading foward , Like 2 mtrs gap between him and the trailing defender
For a Ruckman , It means running foward to create an option foward after center bounce or making it to the drop of the ball not to mention if he can get the ball and run like Nic nat does

We'd have the same amount of talls as we did on the weekend, which worked well even though Gibcus was terrible. Ryan in, Gibcus out, Miller back.
It's hardly land of the giants, one bloke over 200cm. Lions play 2 every week. Carlton have done it most of the season. As long as they're mobile, which ours are. There are midfielders taller than Jack.
I don't think he's 'the answer' but I think he deserves a go. Did anyone think Townsend was 'the answer' in 2017? Just played his role.
No one is saying he should be playing an elimination final. Two BOGs in a row plus fair chance he probably would've played last week if not for concussion. Was emergency a couple of weeks in a row before those BOGs so he's clearly close. Good time to see if he can add anything before finals in case Lynch and/or Jack go down. Can't be any worse than Soldo forward.

Not quick, but quick enough.Are we really trying to say that Samson Ryan is fast?
All tall backs can run roughly that speed.
The point being, the athletic talls who can run can play forward. Ryan is a bit in between, not Soldo but not Lobb or Nic Nat and is primarily a ruck who can play forward and perhaps one day when he gets bigger take some big marks, of which he is starting to do. But up against Allir or Andrews etc he does not have the speed to break away and will be found out at ground level for sure. He is a project player and he played against 192cm backs on the weekend, no wonder he and had and Bauer day out.
Miller is going okay as the second ruck, not sure you want to upset that. Gibcus was far from terrible just dropped a few marks but made good positioning and was not beaten in the air at all. He is the future so until Grimes or Vlastuin comes back he is a good bet on the medium backs. Back him in with two weeks to go.
Gibcus did F all in the ressies (and the seniors for the last 2 months for that matter). Samson has been BOG twice in a row. Doesnt send a very good message.
