Don't understand your reasoning here.
On one hand your saying Sampson is up against some average players(Like to know how you know this)
Yet you'd consider someone like Gaunt(I think your thinking of)who also plays in a 2nd tier comp and has been delisted and never to return to afl.
I was just assuming Sampson was up against average players, I mean, if we want him for the now then whoever he is playing against in those highlights are not gonna be anything near what he will be up against in the AFL. Yet in those highlights he gets knocked over a few times by little guys. Doesn't look ready to help us now, again, if someone for the now is what we wanted.

I think it's Gaunt or Gault or something yeah, apparently he got the best and fairest twice in a row for his club and he's playing great footy. Surely if we just want someone readymade as a backup, he could have been the guy?

Can't I have an opinion without professing to be in the know..? Isn't that almost all posts on these forums..?

I back the club but just having an opinion here, that's all.

I love reading back on these threads 3-4 years down the track. So many “x or y was a muchhhhh better option available at that pick”. Nine times out of ten we are nowhere near it..

I’m not saying we shouldn’t comment (it is a pharken footy forum), but it’s still very amusing nonetheless

remember when people wanted to draft Cale Morton instead of Trent Cotchin 😆😆😆

For sure mate.Everyone can have an opinion its all good.
If its just someone for now then for sure a Gault would fit that bill as a rookie.
Just by the looks of it Sampson isn't just about next year.

Knew nothing about him beforehand but after doing some reading, etc i reckon its an astute pick up..

Might take a while to develop but he has all the tools and has a huge frame

Most promising sign for me is that he only turned 20 yesterday but already seems to have that confidence playing in his size

I know a few really rated callow but for him not to be picked up by any club says to me we don’t know the full story with him

Would have to have flunked the interviews or medicals or something surely. For no one to even take a sly punt with a late pick.

Look at it this way guys,

With Nank in the AFL, Soldo out until 2022, and CCJ suspended for the first 4 games, it means that we have to play Chol as a ruckman at VFL level and our forward line suffers. We are significantly weak in the VFL ruck stocks now due to Soldo and CCJ. Needed depth.

A few queries on him. We liked him. But apparently clubs feel that his inbetween height and his lack of athleticism may not translate to AFL. Feel he has gotten by by being bigger and stronger than his opponents which will not be the case in the big time.

That’s what I was thinking as well

I also read a lot of the pre draft write ups questioning if he looked better than he was due to having that size advantage playing against smaller bodies

will be very interesting if he gets picked up today in the rookie draft or not

With the development success we had with Soldo,I'm confident we won't die wondering with this kid.
As for Callow i think it come down too him being in a mans body playing against kids.No upside.

Should get picked up. Especially as a rookie. May even be looked at as a supplementary draft pick. Have him train with a club for 3 months and see how he can translate his frame and skills against quality, seasoned, bigger framed opposition. If it doesn't translate, let him walk. If it does, he could be a bargain.

Been the knocks on players like Rich and Darling. Worked out well for them.

This is a real surprise this one. Trying to figure out why you take him at pick 40 rather than as a rookie.

He is about 18 months older than and average 18yo draftee so I guess he would be closer to being able to compete at AFL standard than most 18yo rucks.

But with:

Nankervis and Soldo specialist rucks

Coleman-Jones and Chol ruck/forwards

Ryan and Colina as possible long term developing specialist ruck prospects

it is starting to look like we have a lot of specialist rucks.

Possible reasons:

- Richmond identified a high priority need for a back-up specialist ruck 2021, see Ryan as best available, just didn’t want to risk anyone else taking him in a year where rucks are seen as a bit scarce and valuable.

- Richmond continuing a bit of a tradition of bringing in players of a type together, and looking at matching him with Colina. Perhaps this is seen as the best way to accelerate development to get them competing against each other, but also gives the club a clear choice in future years, as with Castagna/Butler, Collier-Dawkins/Ross, Coleman-Jones/Balta/Miller, Baker/Higgins.

- Needing a ruck and not liking the look of any mature prospects, Richmond figured why not grab the best young prospect who has any real chance of playing effectively 2021.

That’s about the best I can come up with. Our recruiters know their stuff really well and I am sure they have followed sound reasoning here.
You take him in the draft because as a ruckman he'll require at least two years to developed. A smaller player can be rookie picked and if at the end the year he's done nothing then you can just delist.

After watching the post draft interview with Clarke on the club website
Wouldn’t be shocked if we skip with our rookie pick in the draft today and elected to take that option and trial sombody over the pre season

It may also be a bad sign on how bad Soldo's knee might be. :(

Would love to see us do this with Baldwin. Feel he could be anything and back our medicos as they have been the best in the business the past 5 years.

100% he is the ultimate high risk high reward prospect at this point
Our list is in a good spot and with a very strong draft hand for next year now is the perfect time to take a risk that

Could be. Or the fact that we don't have high hopes for Colina. Or the rumours that CCJ is gone at the end of 2021 if he doesn't get gametime.

Would be a good understudy to Jack. Low risk as a rookie/supplementary list pick.

It’s hard to say
Bar CCJ we don’t really have any genuine rucks being developed so the club might just prefer to have a few options in the future

True in regards to Darling although if i put my tin foil hat on he did end up at WC where they do have a rep of hiding players.Rich on the other hand.Different type of player but has one great weapon.Kicking.

To be fair on Darling, also had the incident at a school camp and was seen as a risk as he was known to smoke weed.
