Player Watch #34: Jack Graham - MOVED TO WCE - PICK 42 Received

It's frustrated me for ages Graham being the 'defensive' player as his best work is his offence. Nobody can run a game out like him. Very similar to Lambert, they work back then surge forward. Graham and Lambert both have neat skills and they don't fumble, which makes them very handy link players. And Graham can still do his defensive work, that's a given.

If Graham makes this kind of game his standard he is A grade and likely AA this year.

Always knew he could do it.

I've now reached the point where I actually want Cotch to fit in around Graham, not the other way round. o_O

Different players really. Cotch is hard at the ball and the man in and under, Graham is a running linking player who with Lambert play a fair bit half forward and take Dusty's man when he plays midfield (who hangs around the middle of the ground). I'd like to see Ross replace Cotch as I think they are similar sorts, centre square mids. Would like to see Cotch rest forward more as well, perhaps changing with Bolton.

Seems to me football is going back to those days in the 70's and 80's where players like Bartlett and Matthews played mid resting forward. Bont, Cripps, Danger, Fyfe all spending more time forward. Bolton / Martin / Graham / Lambert perhaps Cotchin genuine mid / forwards. Much rather see these players 'resting' forward than sitting on the bench.

I hope we don't see a drop off v Hawthorn & it wasn't just a one off.
Trending upwards is Jack G. Pretty solid run of good games. Including finals last year. Cotch back might affect these high stats he's getting. But, seriously, just play our game get the win first and foremost.

Cotch is contracted until 22. Ross is AFL ready just can't find a spot at this point. Interested to see what selectors do with Caddy, Aarts, Pickett over the year. And if Ross can slot in. Hope so

Not sure we're headed back to 70s/80s overall. But resting a gun player forward is a good move. Dusty has made it a big thing. I remember Ricuitto (sp?) doing it towards the end at Adelaide, worked well. Those big strong mids can play medium forward well. I reckon Jack, Graham that is, being able to rest forward with impact. But his thing is just going all day, so resting forward is maybe losing more than you gain.

Really looking forward to seeing Graham's next 50 games. 2, 3 4 more premierships and a couple of AA's would be nice.

I have no doubt that Ross will force his way in, it's just a matter of who and how and when. I would keep him in, and at least one of the the players above you mentioned should make way. Injuries always give opportunity, and Ross was excellent when he got his chance, Caddy, Aarts and Pickett weren't, although it was only one week.

I always thought his ceiling was limited. Defensive player, didn't get the ball enough for an AFL midfielder, lacked quick decision making in close.

But second half of last season he looked a totally different player. Looks like he's gone on with it again.

It could be that getting chased by multiple other clubs with big offers, then us emphasising how keen we are to keep at the club long term has given him more confidence in his game as a player verging on elite

Someone posted he attended 16 centre bounces, would have been lucky to attend that many all of last season.

Might have also benefitted from the new rule a little as well as he always been available for the kick on the 45 but often ignored whereas that kick is on more often now.

But mostly its a result of hard work and if you were going to follow anyone off the ball at this football club it would be Graham. He and Edwards caught Williamson holding the ball in the third quarter and it was a result of 100m of chasing that forced Carlton to over handball it and left Williamson searching for his left with Edwards wrapping him up and Graham going third man in. Shouldn't have been Grahams kick mind you.

Play Cotchin forward..

He probably won't get the same numbers as last week but if he drops off as much as 20% he's still going to play a very good game.

Have loved this guy almost from game one, just relentless and so honest. Definitely agree he's a contender for Captain in the future.

Not sure if it was Tom Lynch or Jack Riewoldt, but one of them said if they could pick a player to lead out to it would be Jack Graham.

I'm sure it didn't hurt, but it's easy to forget or discount the fact that he's only just over the 50-game mark.

That's the traditional marker from where most players really start to make quality contributions, with the 100 game mark traditionally being the graduation point to quality, fully senior player.

Like most traditional markers used to guage a player's progress, Graham's way ahead of the curve.
