So the trade aside (I actually think it was a good trade under the circumstances) I wonder why we went for Matt ahead of his brother who was slightly higher rated? Or Shanahan for that matter? Could it be character related? Or does Clarko like versatility that much?

Does the club see him predominantly back or forward?

A lot of recruiters think shanahan could maybe even end up a defender

I hope we didn’t take Matt just due to exposed versatility

Just read through the weekly scouting notes for the bush rangers and the whitlocks.

It was very interesting looking at stats and getting a rundown of how the twins were being used.

Matt had games of 24 disposals, 11 marks at chb and then 5 goals 15 possessions as a close to goal forward, or 15 disposals 10 marks as a high chf pushing up to the wings and hb.

His ability at ground level and his ability to beat his opponent on The lead were often highlighted. The draw back was his marking was not at his brothers level as consistently.

One thing that stands out to me visually is he seems really comfortable carrying the footy/running past for a handball.

Re his brother, he kicked more goals than him at Coates and equal to him in jis 1 game forward for vic country. But added to that were some domaine games down back as a rebounding/intercepting defender.

Clearly a Comben replacement option if not a kpf in his own right

I wonder if this choice is as much about the type of player MW is - a tall, nimble and agile type.

As I understand it, Shanahan is a more stay at home KPP and JW is seen in that same vein.

Maybe MW is a sign where the game is moving - a high velocity rebound game.

The era of the Tom Hawkins types might be coming to an end.

I reckon that we are after both brothers and Jack is going to slide to where we can get back in, while Matt wasn't going to make it there.
