I’ve said it a few times, you select the player not the position.

188cm, very good aerially. Hard at it. Disposal isn’t great yet nor is it shocking. Can play forward or back and never been in an elite system.

Those attributes and that potential doesn’t mean he’ll be locked in to one position or another.

Worth the punt.

We do miss a left footer coming out of the back line since Houlis departure. In saying that Trezise needs to improve his kicking significantly to get to AFL standard let alone to Houlis standard. Do however love his competitive nature, should at the very least be a good shut down/intercepter but his ceiling will be defined by improving his disposal.
He'll fit right in with our team then! I think his kicking efficiency will improve though with more training. He's hardly been in a professional environment for very long.

Didnt we spend a high draft pick for tom brown? His position is redundant as we half many half back flankers

Should have used the second pick on a speculative tall forward like buller. 6 months then delist if no good.

Very safe and uninspiring. Might turn out okay but this was a chance to roll the dice on a higher ceiling player. Draft picks you have to give 2 years.

Why so demeaning?

demeaning

  1. putting somebody in a position that does not give them the respect that they should have
  2. SYNONYM humiliating
    • He found it demeaning to work for his former employee.
WTF are you talking about? Last time I checked a 20yo 188cm 76kg's professional footballer would be considered a weed. Sorry I keep forgetting my sensitivity training.

Sorry petals maybe I should say he looks like we've picked up a Matt Arnott clone.

Have you seen him play? He is extremely strong. He doesn't need to put on 10 kg like some to gain strength. Some people just are very strong naturally.

LOL. In that case maybe suggest to Meehan he sheds 10kg's as we don't need EXTREMELY strong. Imagine how fast he'll be whilst still remaining relatively strong.

This. Why make stupid comments when you have NFI? I'm not saying he's the next superstar but imagine if he was and you are saying we shouldn't have drafted him just because he played for our VFL side? He is new to the side. He has only played half a dozen games with us and in just that short time he has impressed. That says a lot. He is strong, good overhead, a nice left foot kick, reads the game well and tackles well. Pretty good all-rounder.

I just don't think we need another "pretty good" all-rounder, mid-sized flanker. Sounds like Ross etc. And adding a 20 year old who plays the same role as every single pick we took in 2021 draft - just makes it harder to share their game time around to ensure they don't flame out. Doing it this way also means we don't even add a new player to our VFL list, which could have been handy (or not)

As much as i don;t know his game, I have watched a number of VFL games in the past & never noticed him either. So the fact i don't know his game is not a complete pass,

Nothing safe about the two guys we picked.

Literally played 8 games of SANFL/VFL footy combined.

It is unlikely you are going to get a superstar in the mid season draft. Getting a good all-rounder is actually a win.

He looks solid but I’m confused as to why we picked him up when we have these sort of players already. I was expecting another prospective mid/wing type or forward to be honest.

A wing would have been great.....

Wonder if the club had intended to take Narkle and Port pipped us? I have done no pre-reading on this draft so not sure what everyone was expecting etc - but Narkle would have been a good addition at this point

There is no reason he cannot play wing. Don't forget we have Banks who looks to be a very good winger, still waiting for a game.

you would have to think he will get a game very soon. He was playing in our VFL side already, I wouldn't be surprised to see him named very quickly

EDIT: Or, with the recent obsession with intercept marking down back taking over the game, Richmond have noticed a need? Who gets dropped from down back for him to come in though?

He's played 6 games for our VFL side. That's it. I doubt he'll be picked in the seniors straight away but funnier things have happened.

Trezise has AFL traits for sure. It’s a very good pick and as I said earlier, he was interviewed by West Coast, North Melbourne and GWS. He had a lot of interest.

I’m not sure why GWS passed to be honest.

He now comes into a full time gig with full time training for the first time in his life. To be at his standard without this previously is amazing. He’s raw but has so many tools.

I also think it’s good to get our own VFL talent on our AFL list. We missed out on two I really liked to Essendon previously so I’m happy to have James on board.

Give him the number 23.

How many times have you been recruited to an afl list tough guy?

Just seems a waste to me. Role is not required & we already know what he is

Got a chance to see someone new & you throw give the spot to a guy you already control and see all the time?

He might turn out great - i have NFI on his game. But as an opportunity to get a good look at someone else, its a bit of a wasted opportunity for me.
I think we have room for better kicks, which is what I suspect Trezise’s strong in (suspect and hope, but I don’t actually know tbh). Our kicking efficiency is one the worst in the competition right now, so this is one of our priority areas. Of course, whether he is a good kick is a whole different story, but we’ll see I guess.

You get these players in if they look good. He is a great tackler. It opens up possibilities like trading out a player like Jack Graham for eg on $450k and replacing him with a guy on $200k or less for a couple of years. You might get a 2nd round pick for the exisiting established player, and save $6-800k or cap space over a few years. And if the new bloke is decent you may notice little to no drop in team performance.
This would be the benefit of picking up a player like this over a speculative key forward for eg, that has little chance of ever fulfilling the role to the level you need it to be played. And it saves you money you can then throw at a key forward who can fulfil the role the way you want him to.

If you go back over some of our lower value picks....did we appear to particularly need Lambert, Short, Broad, Baker, Pickett when we drafted them? All would have played a couple of years at least on really low money, allowing us to retain and recruit players that may have otherwise not been possible.

Another similar one is Tylar Young. If he can hold down a key back position(tracking well so far) we may be able to deploy Balta or Gibcus forward, or trade one of them for a key forward or do something else that improves our list.

These low cost guys are gold if they end up being good, as Lambert, Broad, Baker, Short and Pickett in particular have shown.

This guy will be a gun. He's only been in the system for a few games and he is already showing a lot. Importantly he is a left-footer which is something we need more of!
Good selection despite the obviously ignorant comments already made.....

Yeah but can he turn it over like Greg Tivendale?

Never see a bloke with a great kicking action butcher it like him. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get that from him

Pretty sure I’ve been the most vocal on this board about us having far too many flankers, with very little pure midfield depth and basically zero quality key position depth.

And I’ve been saying this since the 2021 draft…

So what does the club do? Goes and gets another one… fmd.

In the best 22… Vlastuin, Broad, Baker, Rioli, and Short (playing more mid atm). None of them are being overtaken by anyone anytime soon.

In the current 22 but probably shouldn’t be… Ralphsmith (also a hybrid wing type), and Mansell (has been turned into a forward).

And the rest… Brown, Banks (more a wing now seemingly), Smith, Green, and now Trezise.

That is a total of seven half back flankers (with one currently a forward and the argument that two are wingers) currently outside the 22 or in it but shouldn’t be.

Meanwhile the five in the 22 are all quality premiership players nowhere near retirement age, so very little chance a developing kid gets a crack outside of lots of injuries. And if one gets a crack there’s a long queue for the others to get a go. A pure midfielder gets injured and we have Dow and Sonsie (very outside player) as cover and that’s it.

This is the 90s and 2000s all over again.

That said, Trezise actually does look like he can play. Definitely like the look of him.

But if I see Matthew Clarke say that they feel either Coulthard or Trezise have genuine upside with the ability to possibly push into the midfield, I will go mad.

Meanwhile, Essendon make out like bandits once again. They either steal from us or watch us not pick who we should have and grab them.

What is going on…
