I don’t really get it.

He has shown stacks of potential as a key forward and we really don’t have much depth in the key forward space compared to key defenders.

His contested marking style (put in front and at height) is far better suited to being a key forward imo.
Seems an obvious choice for 3rd forward / backup ruck. Putting it down to some Clarko education. I like that whatever role he’s been asked to play he’s shown something in that role.

It was just the one match sim. X played forward in that lesser forward line (with darling and Zuhaar). Also could just be some development.

I agree that it would be strange for him to play there for the whole year.

That said, he kicked a goal off half back.

Just keeps getting results for a guy that doesn’t know much about playing footy.

That’s fair! Probably a bit of overreaction on my behalf.

I’m just really keen to see him play a bit deeper as a genuine FF this year in the VFL as we won’t have Sellers as the focal point.

I don't think he is going to play as a pure defender. If I had to guess, it is a development thing given he is a part time ruck/CHF and is expected to drop behind the footy on occasion in those roles.

Fwiw I suggested Maley as an intercept defender a little while back.

His marking, athleticism and aggression could make him a weapon in that role.

Kicking currently too scratchy for an AFL KF.
I like it too. Intercept defender is a much simpler position to learn and suits Maley well - except for the kicking.

He has shown some promise as a ruck/forward, but that role is a combination of possibly the two hardest positions to learn in the game - which is why good ones are so rare. It is a big ask for a player who hasn't played the game all his life.

You'd want a Caleb Daniel or McKercher nearby for the quick handoff every time though.

Yep it’s always worth a try in the VFL for those raw types who lack some game awareness. Case in point Majak Daw. Although we tried this far too late with Maj. Dont make the same mistake with Maley.

Bit confused about the number of eggs we seem to have in the key defender basket right now.

Logue, Matlock, Comben, Maley, Corr will slot in when he's fully fit/back in good nick. Ditto for the Dawson brothers, whether that's the real thing or the magoos.

Meanwhile, the forward line is... what? Larkey and Darling? Maybe with Peakle as back-up?

Do we think every team's forwards have grown a foot over the summer?

Because of either indecision or a fondness for flexibility, I don't think we know which end any of Matlock, Comben, Maley, or Wawson will play most of their footy.

It could be a by-product of the fact that we only remembered at the end of 2023 that key position players are in fact important, and hence are now managing a sizeable number of uncertain prospects, but how many other clubs do you reckon play musical chairs with their talls?

It couldn't take that much to ask players where they think they're strongest and then stick them in that position, surely. It might all work out but I'm looking at this current situation and am slightly uncomfortable with both the constant rotation and the amount of trust we're putting in an old man and two bargain basement pick-ups to provide something as nailed-down forwards
