Wow, junior development is getting even stronger?
And more than St Ignatious has a footy team now?
Geeze, major developments in just 5 years since I left.

And just thinking of how good it could get if the AFL is putting more money into development. I know for a fact one of the 2 or 3 guys they had around 2004 working on the development of the game found a player at a school auskick session, brought him into his team, coached him up from u12s-u15s and then he gets a scholarship. Ediriwickrama would have done better if he wasn't so injury prone.

The game will get only stronger in NSW with even more junior teams and even more AFL reps going around to schools for auskick sessions. Definently looking good, and who knows, we might eventually get that 3rd AFL team, and it'd be hilarious if they're based at Birchgrove Oval :p

At least 20 years away IMO. They are doing well at a grass roots level and are trying to put a sherrin in the hands of as many kids as they can just so they can make the choice. But a third team is at least one generation away, probably two if footy catches on.

No, just no.

Yeah agree with this, its all good for football.

I posted that article because it was written by a RU tragic.
I was surprised that he had predicted a second team for Sydney but he does seem to be in the know about sport in Sydney and not biased towards AFL.

.

This is about growing a fan base and lower level participation numbers and therefore a slight expansion of the talent pool. Nothing to do with an additional team.

Kids playing means parents watching, that is TV viewers. A larger pool of youth means healthy academies and a stronger reserves comp, therefore more potential draftees.

No more Sydney teams i'd rather the next team to be Tasmania.
Teams at Wollongong, Canberra, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Cairns would all have a greater contribution to the AFL than Tasmania as the 19th team.

Why do people say that?
If you want a Tasmanian team then you need a partner.
One additional team does nothing to the market.
Two additional teams mean a quantum leap.
(That's unless you're talking about relocation which has nothing to do with more Sydney teams.)

.

Like others have said, junior development is all important. I'd prefer a more quality NSW players in the AFL (such as Kieran Jack) rather than more Sydney teams.

Juniors have seen the benfit of recent investment.
There are more NSW players in the AFL and more Sydney players.
More NSW players doesn't neccesarily mean more NSW players in Sydney.
Any new team would obviously after the current new teams have settled in
and further investment/development has taken place.

A third Sydney team? Let's see the GWS get a decent level of crowd support before we start thinking about these fantasies. Maybe in 50-100 years time? The AFL will not expand with anymore teams in a very long time.

Well this article is from a RU stalwart.

The AFL will not expand with anymore teams in a very long time.

I've seen the introduction of an elite Australian Football side into Sydney, Brisbane. Gpld Coast and Sydney again. I've seen the formation of the NEAFL and the dramatic improvement of grassroots football in Sydney.
I see scenarios where there could be further expansion and I see the AFL already eyeing various prospects.
It's really quite impossible to predict with any certainty,

Oh dear after reading that rather piss taking article, i really have to wonder if cos isn't 5 beers short of a six pack.

You do klnow he was taking the piss cos? yes?

Regardless, where would a 3rd AFL side be positioned?
The North and East are the support for the Swans
so that pretty much leaves the South and Illawarra.

Knox is a school which could be considered in the same sentence as the GPS schools (SCEGGS, St Joeys etc). To have it played in a GPS competition is crucial to gaining and maintaining sport within Sydney (after all, alot of the future CEOs are at these schools).

A third team should be on the cards. It shouldnt be a matter of waiting until the right time and then starting to plan. It should be heres the right time lets implement the plan.
I think 4 teams in NSW is very achievable, and I would aim for 5 (with a whole lot less in Melbourne). Think Swans for the North, GWS the West, Pioneers in the Shire and surrounds, Coasters at Central Coast, and the Calvary for Newcastle!
There should also be four Queensland teams (two Brisbane, one GC and a Nth Queensland.)

That's too much, 1 or the other, or heck, a combination, but not both.
