If it does come down to keep one and lose one of those two… I wouldn’t be happy with either outcome.

Maybe I am a bit sentimental but he’s a big part of why I got to celebrate a flag and bawl my eyes out after going through so many years of pain.
I couldnt ever say I’d let him go for a better offer.
I couldn’t do it mate
Yeah me too brother, gotta take the emotion out of it though.

Hope so. But wasn’t there some suggestion at the end of last year he wanted to head back north?
Even if he did want to play on, there’d be few clubs that’d take the risk, unless he was playing for peanuts, and that ain’t happening
see how Dion plays when he returns. he can play

but way to injury prone to go elsewhere. I can see him getting one year, heavily reduced contract. with retirement clause.

With baker wouldn't be shocked if you could burgle say about pick 14 & 45 with something like pick 30-35 going back the other way.

From Freo we could surely get around pick 14. But even then after all the Academy picks etc that will prob become an early 20s pick. It's nothing great and we wont get more than that.

He shouldn't get another year regardless. We have Hopper, Taranto, Ross, Dow all playing a similar role. What if he was fit all of next season? There would be no room in the midfield to play any youngsters in our best 23.

I'd like to see prestia play in another flag even if it is for the reserves he can play 5 or 6 games in a row when his hammy mends qualify, get it 30+ times most games in a canter and help the kids and if his body can stay good a few cameos in the ones, re-access for a one year deal if both parties can come to terms.

dusty, dion, dylan, marlion, JGTI, macca, hopps and tim should never be in the same side anymore, it makes us too old and too slow. maybe for dustys 300 for the sentimental side of it..... but I think Adem has already realised this and is now nicely blending the old with the new. and putting a few kids in the driver's seat. leaving the kids in the middle probably reinforces this.

AFL media is working for someone and its not the general public.

There is absolutely no reason the club needs to "pick" between Dusty and Baker. None.

We have TWENTY THREE players out of contract at the end of this season

I would sign Baker 1st, Dusty 2nd, Nank 3rd. Then i would wrap up MRJ, Campbell, Miller, Ross, & possibly Mansell & Dow in that order. After that i could wave them all off unless the deal works for us.

There is no "choice between the 2", that is mental. This is the AFL gaslighting Richmond people to normalise Dusty leaving to re-join Dimma in the Gold Coast as thats what is best for the AFL. I've said it for yonks, the AFL want this to happen. OF COURSE the do! Dusty and the Gold Coast community are a match made in heaven.

The Tigers try to re-sign him at all cost. In my lifetime, Dusty, Richo, Cotchin have meant more than any other player for the club. We do not, nor should not, treat our history lightly. The AFL gives ZERO ****S to the history of the clubs, but as a club we need to protect it.

The AFL are trying to normalise Dusty walking away from Richmond. The club needs to do everything in its power to not let that happen. COMMIT. COMMIT. COMMIT. Make him really chose.... are you going to walk away from the people who loved you, or, do you want to spend the last 2 years of your career on a weird side quest in a land where no one gives a real shit?

Ask Gary Ablett jnr how his time in GC affected his legacy. He at least went back right at the end, Dusty will not have that moment.

Its A Trap GIF

If he leaves, it is never under the illusion that it was "best" for Richmond. He leaves either via a "sign & trade", or he retires a tiger sooner or later. The AFL only care about how this will affect eyeballs on screens for 2 years, but once Dusty leaves and wears another shirt - the history of our club changes forever. They don't care about how it feels for us in 10,20 30-50years time.

Jack Dyer - lifer
Richo - lifer
Cotchin - lifer
Dusty - lifer

Thats what it means to be a great at Richmond.

Also don't forget

Dusty leaves, we get zilch

Baker leaves, we will get what he is worth

Bake's i a cracker, love him. But he is not a top 5 player on a premiership team. Far too small. If he left and went anywhere else, i can almost guarantee his best years would have been at Richmond. Mark it down. If we are rebuilding and putting that first, you let Baker leave, re-sign Dusty for historical integrity or he retires a tiger

I don’t agree

Jack busted his ass last year

But yeah I’m calling it. Dusty is gone end of season. No interest in a rebuild

Then he will sit behind Richo, Cotchin, KB, Dyer for me on the Tiger Pyramid of greats.

The choice is his. 2 years of gold coast or a lifetime of being "The Greatest" for the biggest club in Australia.

Very short-sited of Dusty if he were to do this. Surely money is no longer an issue for him. Club would re-sign him on a decent contract either way. If he wanted to leave he needed to do it last season when we could trade him out and it be a "fair result" for both. As it stands its a crap way to leave - exactly like Dimma

There is no real cost to signing Dusty for another couple of years if wants. It would be on much reduced dollars. It's not going to stop us paying players we need to, end of the day our list generally doesn't deserve to get paid full tote given where we are at, it's only that we have to pay min salary cap. And we don't have enough decent picks where spending one on Dusty is going to matter. He has been the best investment we've ever made and it will cost us nothing in opportunities lost to give him another two years.

It's standard Ralph Carr speak. Always leaves the door open intentionally.

Yeah its a strategy.

My point has been though, at this point in your career, what need is there for strategy unless you have a plan?

Cotchin, Jack, Hawkins, Selwood - these blokes had no "strategy". They got to play as long as they like at their club. So does Dusty. Why the strategy then?

Nah, not good enough for us MR.

I genuinely think we could (and should) be extracting the equivalent of at least a Top 10 pick for him (Baker), if not more. His whole is greater than the sum of his parts.

You must have missed last year when Hawkins mate Josh Jenkins 'leaked' that the Dees were interested in Hawkins. He had a new deal from the cats soon after.

ill throw my 20c in the hat.....

Dusty is a legend of the club. I dont feel he will play on next year but I do think he would be great to have around even if he is not firing on all cylinders. He is such an amazing role model and would give kids an amazing buzz to play with one of the all time greats.
I think keeping him in the forward line last week was a insight into what his last year or two might look like if he chose to stay on.
I don't think he is worth anything of value equal to what he/we deserves as a trade TBO.

I Fully agree we have more than enough depth but Yzes round 1 team selections have me worried that a lot of the old injured cripples will hang around.

I agree, that's why they need to go. I don't really have a problem selecting them if they are available. If you stack the VFL with the oldies the club can fall apart. The dogs have dropped a couple and everything seems to be crumbling there because of it. We need to position the list going forward so the the best 23 has room for young players even if everyone is healthy.

Rubbish as he holds us back moving forward and some of his efforts Sunday showed he didn't give a damn . He was awful for team spirit and morale. Any clown knows he's the greatest player the clubs ever had, but that is not the point here .lol

Norf retired off a couple of their all time greats in Boomer and Petrie (went to Eagles for a year). How’d that strategy go?

Or what about Bombers encouraging Lloyd into retirement? Haven’t won a final in 18-years.

Demons forcing out Robbo, James McDonald and others to play the kids? Disaster.

Or Hawks shoving Mitchell, Lewis and Hodge out the door … how’s that looking for them?

I’m struggling to think of many examples where fast tracking club legends into retirement or trading / delisting them has proven to be a positive move? So not sure why anyone would think it’s a good idea based on a pretty bleak track record for clubs who’ve done it to ‘move on’..??

I hear a lot of people saying Dusty owes us nothing. I get that point of view and obviously think he’s the most influential player to a club since Carey.

BUT if it wasn’t for the clubs patience (especially Cotchin) and good culture he wouldn’t have won any flags, if it was any other club he would’ve left to rot at North or GWS.

I personally expect that Dusty owes us to be a 1 club player after what RFC has helped give him even if it means going down with the ship.

Maybe I’m harsh but Richmond have a great history with 1 club players I don’t want that ruined because he can’t be stuffed playing in a shit side and wants to hang out at the beach. You have plenty of time to do that when you retire.

With our injuries you would most likely be 99.99999999999999999% right.
List strategy is to clean out every one that won’t be there for our next flag in the senior ranks
Of the ones who want or could be traded out they go next .
Keep all kids except probably NIWL, Dow , HRS , Colina and Coulthard
Keep Kosi one more year even though I would like to get rid of him , but three years?
Bank as many picks as possible hopefully for next two to three drafts.

Many probably thought the same thing when Pies finished 17th in 2021… why keep Pendles, Sidey etc..when they won’t be part of next flag? Or Cats after they got demolished in the 2021 PF by Demons … they looked cooked. But they weren’t.

If we look really honestly at our season thus far, if we had 2-3 players out and not 7-8, where do you think our win/loss would sit?

GC: Loss
Carlton: Win
Port: Loss
Swans: Win
Saints: Win
Eagles: Win

Even being quite harsh we’d be 3-3 and in the mix.

It’s crazy to write off the next 4-years when things can turn so quickly in AFL footy.
