I'm in an accidental beard growing comp with Grockadoc it seems after last night ha ha.

could be a good bet!

A good bet actually. If Sonsie gets his mojo he will be first team. But there is that doubt whether he will/can do that.

If you win, great. if you lose we know something about Sonsie.

Judged by who? The AFL scouts had a closer look at his football talent then anyone else and he went where he went. I like him as a player I don't think it's fair that he's being judged like he should be performing as a top pick when he certainly wasn't that

He went where he went in the 2021 draft. I mentioned the year before the draft. Some watchers had him going in the top 10 based on his under 16 year. Read some of the draft profiles.

One doubt I have after watching the VFL game, has he enough pace to break tackles to play that inside/out game at the higher level. Did a tonne of work at the contest but a lot of his work was contested and not particularly clean. I thought McCauliffe and McCarthy were cleaner in that respect. So is he a genuine mid, or is he better across half forward where he can use his clean skills better. As an outside mid I'm not sure he's quick enough either.

Only way to find out...is...test him!

in the VFL i have him as a genuine mid, but in the AFL things change a little and i think a forward flank suits him, i think he could take a wing too at times.

A bit more freedom, I also like the wing idea, not necessarily full time but in rotations with perhaps Ross or whomever.
He’s an onballer for sure. Finds the footy and generally has great vision and uses it well.
We need to play players in their positions of strength. He was outstanding as a mid at junior level, and was mooted a top 3-5 pick the year before his draft. I was so happy when we got him where we did, will be a very good player imho

Plenty of very good juniors don't transition for one reason or another. My query is not ability but pace for his position right now. Seems he had to work really hard to get easy possessions on the weekend. A bit the same last season. As he gets stronger that might not be such an issue, but doesn't have that zip off the mark that many good mids have to break free.

We are desperate for this kid to step up. We need some foots kills around the ball. Banks too.
We are desperate for all five top 30 picks in that draft to step up.
Gibcus will be fine.
Given that they all won't be stars, we absolutely need one of the other four to be a star and one to be very good.

reckon mcauliffe pick up was massive. kid looks like he could be a genuine star. eases the pressure on us having to have nailed all those high picks by plucking a gem from a write-off draft.

That’s not how I remember him at the beginning. Did have a very limited first pre-season though. I think he was a good player but he just went to another level from 2017 onwards, his hardness at the ball and the man just so inspiring.
Sonz only turned 21 about 3 weeks ago, and he has the skills and footy smarts to be a star imo. He hasn’t shirked any contests from my observations, and it’s only this current off-season that he’s building the body to withstand the rigours of playing on-ball at senior level.

Then you really must not remember Cotch. Some of the things he was doing in 2011, 2012 and 2013 were downright unbelievable. His clean hands in tight and his evasiveness were off the charts. Rewatch some of his games from 2012 in particular. Definitely better individually than 2017, but his transition to ‘tea first’ style of football propelled us to the dynasty team we became.

Hmmmm, I thought he was drafted in 2007? By 2011, he’d had 4 pre-seasons with us? Sonsie only getting to that now, which was my original point and with his skill set, clean and good decision making with great skills, he can reach a much higher ceiling than he’s shown to date.

Yeah and I can still go to the moon
I don't think he'll win it. Was more the fact that I was surprised he was still eligible, by the skin of his teeth in both age and games played.

In saying that, we've only had 1 nomination in 4 years, which was Ralphsmith. Would be nice for the kids to get some public recognition to shut the sheep up.
