Now hear me out..

We MUST give him some genuine and consistent midfield minutes in 2025.

We have not given him the best opportunity to be the best player he can be.

Absolutely!

He obviously has talent. He hasn't displayed it so far at AFL level. I reckon just give him a go for an extended period as amid and see where he ends up. Doesn't matter if it doesn't help us win games. If he can make it as an AFL mid we win long term big time.

I reckon his major issue is actually in his head. Get him more physically ready (reports sound good) and let him know he has eh spot we see if he can fill it.

i reckon he will most likely fail. But then I also see him making it, and if he 'makes it' he is likely to be very good.

we didn't gift dow games.

we had no players left in that position.
Dow played from Ground zero, with TT, JH, Prestia. Killer T_Sonz was suspended. Although he and Kmac2 were mids in the VFL Round 1. Then Dow held his spot.

Both Sonz & KMac2played well in the VFL.

Kmac2 and the new toys, maybe Ross, MRJ, are battling for mid time.

Ross peaked in 2019, now wing. Sonz peaked late 2022, its a shame Killer aint better up fwd. We desperately need goals kicked. Bolton & Martin need replacing.

You only have to watch that final in Brisbane to work out how much we have stuffed up his development since that game. Dimma only had his eyes on the prize when Taranto and Hopper said they wanted to come to Richmond.

Sonsie should have left then, not sure if we can turn around 3 years of damage though, he is a shell of that junior player, has no confidence and has forgotten what it takes to get a clearance.

I know a few here like to put the bloke down as lacking courage but this one really irks me with how the club has mishandled his development. Actually makes me wonder how our recent recruits are going to fair if they get treated just a poorly.

It's most definitely a mental thing.

Because of how we have played him he seems to not believe in himself as much as he should.

It's all about feeling like you belong.

We need to get to that point with him.

If we stuffed up players development then our ex-players who were poorly developed would be regularly popping up at other clubs and starring.

But they aren't.

Sonsie plays a certain type of game in the midfield where he probably needs the team functioning well around him to be damaging. He is good at what he can do well but his game seems limited to that at this stage. I am not sure that is the club's fault.

People saying "no free rides", "he has to earn it" etc I'd typically agree in any other year, but what do we lose by giving him a proper run of games on ball this year?
We aren't making finals, we are a lock for bottom two.

We don't actually lose anything by giving him a go. That way, people like myself won't have any excuses anymore.
Imagine if he kills it and gives us an added dimension to our midfield?

We are on the floor of our rebuild, we may as well test the foundations.

The coaches/selectors see these guys in training/match sims just about every day. If he was able to hold his own in an AFL midfield before now he would definitely have been played there. If he becomes capable, the coaches will know before us, and they will play him there if there is a spot available. They have to be left to pick the teams and positions according to their best judgement on the available evidence each week.

If Sonsie looks less capable than your 4th best mid of playing midfield, are you really giving him a block of games ahead of other young mids who are deemed better?

The selectors aren't there to satisfy our curiosity about whether a player could succeed in a given role.

We do lose something. 10 valuable games of experience that needs to go to a player that has earned the right by performance. Not gifting games. He needs to kill it in the preseason and demand a spot, else back to the reserves and probably his swan song.

I really hope Sonsie can grab his chance but no gifted games. Do it and do it hard Sonz.

This is my thing with Sonsie. He isn't forcing his place, and hasn't adapted to playing other positions. If he cna step up the level and hold his own I reckon he'll just keep improving and become that good to very good midfield in the AFL.

As long as he can play to the level I say give him a solid shot at being AFL.

Big year for Sonsie and im confident he will take the next step in his development and show his talent
but i do think he needs to be kept on the list another year atleast with the state of the list
We have players like Young Bauer Kosi Dow Prestia and even kids like Smith & Green either delisted or retire before looking at getting rid of a talent like Sonsie

mentioned it before , Fladers from GC is a very good example of how a player can just POP in a year and they are very similar types

There is a couple that don't so they can say "I told you so". Gives their self ego a boost.
This is a bullshit post. Richmond supporters want players to turn out to be guns. It's just that supporters who have a player earmarked for success that doesn't workout, get uppity when some one labels them a spud. I hope Sonz kills it this year but I can see the point of view that others have of him as at this stage he is not up to the mark.

I think his main problem is he lacks a yard of pace and doesn't have the quick feet/movement to buy that movement that some similar types have. That's no problem if you are a big bodied mid, but he isn't.

He possesses good skills and is a nice mover, but we all remember his Brisbane finals first half and we are waiting for that to materialise again. MacIntosh's first game destroyed Carlton, but he's never quite gone to that level again. Cumberland was great for a bit. Plenty of players look great when they come in, not all of them go on. His elite skills deserted him in the VFL on plenty of occasions as well.

If he gets a run in the midfield he better play a blinder because we have half a dozen others either in front or up his tail. Hopefully he has put on some strength and can compete better around the ball, that is his only chance.

Could be tried at half back as has been mentioned. He has class no doubt but it has gone missing. A bit of confidence and you never know.

Struck me as being a gym dodger and bare minimum effort type early days. He's worked on his fitness a bit but it's only really just getting to adequate levels for a mid now. His size is what will hold him back and why he hasn't had a proper go in the middle, just gets brushed aside. Haven't seen any improvement there from training pics.

He kills it in the middle in the VFL yet plays HFF in the AFL.

Until he plays a run of games in the guts at AFL level, we will never know what he can/could have been.

I am sick of players playing well in a position at VFL level only to be flipped into another at AFL level and struggle.

Yeah I see your point and I'm hopping he hits the season running. I don't want him gifted games. As I've stated earlier, he has to demand a position and I think if it doesn't happen early, then it probably won't at all. If he's hasn't nailed it by season end then he'll just be seen as another list clogger and most likely be delisted

I haven’t labelled Sonz a spud, I want him to succeed but time is running out for him. You need to grow up and understand that people have different opinions about players. Your bullshit remarks just show how you’re over invested in Sonsie and will spit the dummy if he’s sent packing at season end. Also you’ll be the first to brag I told you so if he does make it. Immature is what you are. Learn to respect other’s opinions, even if they’re not yours.
