I think our midfield is fine over the ball but a bit of class and speed on the spread would be handy. Lalor and Hotton will give us that down the track, but it does come in handy. At our peak, Dusty, Bolton, Cotchin, Edwards and even Prestia were sharp over short distances especially. Taranto, Hopper and Prestia now are not, Ross medium and McAuliffe might be but hasn't shown it yet. When the other side gets the ball we looked awfully slow on the spread last year.
We are still to find out what players like Green , Smith , Clarke , Campbell , Alger can produce
also with KPP sorted and inside bulls in place the free agents we chase could be the players that you mention

Season hasn’t even started and some campaigners already saying dud delist

Rubbish. Im very positive about our chances for the Wooden Spoon and that Sonsie is a sooky dud.

Sons, mate, Get a hold of the the pill, get some T/O's and play a part of link up's that lead to score involvements. Occasionally, be that bloke that your teammates run to and and pat on the back because you did the one extra thing that jagged a fork in the P. Cripps / L. Neale / Daicos / Pussy three votes game.

Do the high percentage stuff that everyone knows your capable of. Bust a gut for your team. After you've done this, do it again. Want it a bit more this season. Force others to play just that bit better. Make your name and your next contract.

Tough? Yeah, but totally doable.

I liked him in his draft year, from memory he trained with Hawthorn pre draft. Hope for him and you guys he has a good year
we'll trade him to ya for greg dear

I’ve been quite critical of Sonsie but I just watched the first half of R8 v Fremantle and he was very solid with a couple of elite long kicks. Maybe they are looking at using him in that Baker/Lambert style small utility role because he is an elite user.

Has to play around the pill. He’s not a utility a back or a forward.

If there’s one guy on the list that’s a mid it’s him. Hoping he’s like shedda and clicks quickly with him

can still get involved in midfield contests as a high half forward, maybe thats the plan for him.

I get the feeling they want him as a flanker who will go up to contests on the wing and act as an extra midfielder. Still though, he has shown more around the pill than some others that were given multiple starts in the centre last year.

Don’t quite agree with the last comment
Sonsie gets a lot of it at VFL but he couldn’t win a hard ball to save his life and is a repeat offender when it comes to shirking the contest to avoid contact

It’s always cheap ground ball from spill outs or Tom Mitchell 1 - 2 handball chains that inflate his numbers in the VFL

I’m not a massive Dow fan but if at least he always cracks in to try and win a hard ball at the coal face

Might disagree there. I have seen Dow stand at the contest a lot more than I have seen him crack in and try and win it.

But then your other points kinda go for a reason we should have Sonsie play more than Dow. We don't need 3 mids all at the same time cracking in and trying to win it in the coalface. If Tarranto and Hopper are in the midfield then I would want a Sonsie around the contest to distribute the ball with hopefully sole composure instead of the hack kicks that don't land anywhere near our players.

That’s fair enough but for me it’s about intent if that makes sense

It’s not that I would always want Sonsie to try and crack in every contest but more I want players who absolutely will without hesitation when they need to

Especially if they are playing in the midfield

Just dosent seem to have some of those intangibles and competitive nature and I would prefer to prioritise the kids who have shown it like Kmac2 who just seems to have “it”

Sorry, just cannot agree with that MM. He’s being (unfairly imo) painted as a soft outside player but I don’t agree with that at all. He will put his body on the line when it’s needed, but perhaps, and I’m guessing, he’s been told to stay out of the contest to be that link player as he certainly has the requisite kicking and decision making skills.
He could still be a bust pick, but with the skills he possesses, and remember, he was touted as a high draft pick from U16’s right through to his draft year, he has the talent to be a very very good player. Needs to step it up, no doubt, but like many, I think he’s a player that needs to be given the chance to be around the footy.
He’s shown at VFL level he can find the ball, even when he played those 1-2 games for the Dawks in his draft year. We definitely haven’t seen the best of him thus far, but he seems be be building his frame to play more on ball. Just hope we give him the chance to play to his strengths, which as a junior were always his ability to get the ball and use it to advantage. His clearance work as a junior was very good from what I saw.

Utility in the sense he works over most of the ground, mainly in the front 2/3s. He looked best as an additional number at the stoppages around the ground. He struggled at centre bounces, albeit everyone did.

In 2022 I would have agreed regarding him being one of our only genuine mids. However, we have added Taranto, Hopper, McAuliffe, Smillie and Lalor (and Hotton) to the mix since then. When everyone is fit I think it would be hard to see Sonsie get picked in our top 5-6 mids at this stage. His best option is establishing a role at half forward working across the ground as an extra mid and occasionally going on-ball as the outside midfielder. It took Shedda and Lambert years of playing forward before they became our permanent midfield rotations.

If you look at the passage of play with about 3 mins left in the 2nd quarter (R8 Freo) you will see exactly where Sonsie can be most damaging roaming the ground from half forward. Brown and Short also do well in this passage and other passages with Rioli pushed further up the ground.
