Player Watch #41 Sam Banks

Watching the replay of Banks' performance in the Hawks game, and after seeing Jud Clarke and Sonsie and Brown in recent weeks in the VFL, I can't help but thinking our recruiters are a chance to have nailed all 5 picks in that 2021 draft, injury permitting. It would be no shock if all 5 were permanent fixtures in our team by 2025-26. Banks is just turned 20. He looks a good learner with good focus. More a runner than an intercept marker, but that bit of height still comes in handy to allow him to get a hand in at times. As Grimes then Broad then Vlastuin retire, you could see Banks, Brown, and Gibcus replacing them very capably in our back 7.

You may actually be right for once as they're all looking great. Sonsie I thought would be the top pick of them all, but it's Clarke and Brown for me.Nothing wrong with any of them and the future looks bright.

How awesome would that be, I was watching with humour Cornes roasting our club for not having any youth relying on Riewoldt (LOL) Cotchin and Prestia still. I don't normally watch the Footy show but was too good to refuse.

I seriously doubt Cornes watches many games and just comments on stats.

Cornes can't even tell you what is going to happen after it has already happened. But then David King stated emphatically in 2016 Richmond and Carlton had the two worst lists in the AFL. So it is a great sign if Kane Toad has never heard of our Yewth.

I have him on par with Juddy who played some fantastic footy in the mid part of the season but dropped off

Really looking forward to both of them next season should both be looking to play every game imo

2024 with a whole new coaching philosophy I'm tipping Banks will be the player who makes the biggest improvement. Ralphsmith, McIntosh and Pickett have had there chances. This kid on a wing will add some much needed polish and if Lynch plays will love leading to him as Banks won't just bomb it in and hope. I reckon he'll easily be in the top 10 in the BnF and will kick 12+ goals.

Would love to see him and Short as our Wingers but don't see it happening. Been too long since we've had quality players in the position. Would be nice to see some attack and long penetrating kickers instead of just defensive hacks.

K-Mac won’t be pensioned off for four more years and Pickett has to get his 100 games So Banksy should get a look in in 2028

Copped a fair bit of flack when he was playing for us but we have really missed B Ellis since he left

I like Banks, think he will become a good player. Just not 100% sure on his position, but that's because Dimma used the wings not as attacking options, so if Yze does, someone like Banks could shine in that role.

187cm, good height for a winger, can run and kick. Just needs to pork on 10kg and will be a gun.

Agree! We’ve had those defensive minded role players on the wing for years, time to bring some more attacking flair and skills to the table

I think Banks can do both. Big tank and a good attitude. Another preseason in the gym and I reckon he'll be a first team player next year.

Really keen on Banks developing his game next year.
Yze did empathise on those with skill by foot to be the cornerstone of how we execute our gameplan.
Banks by foot is his strength.

Hahaha ridiculous take. Even if you could make a call on a player after two years (which you can’t) no one is labelling any of those picks as failures with what they’ve managed at AFL level
