Seriously, that is the problem with clips. Half the posters on here could take clips of themselves and look pretty good in around 3 minutes of footage.

So true, so many people are 'sold' too easily based simply on a highlights clip, forgetting just that- they are highlights.

Hell, I remember I arsed a checkside on the run in a game years and years ago. Put it in my highlights reel! I am the recruit of the year, minions.

Problem is, such clips don't show the other 186 times I've tried doing it and ended up kicking it out on the full.

Obviously these kids are somewhat talented to be even considered but "Buyer Beware" when looking at You Tube clips! I imagine somebody like Andrew Dunkley didn't have a great portfolio before he got traded.

In terms of trading over the last 3-4 years, I think Dodoro/Keane have done a very good job with what would have to be one of the better success rates in the AFL, but I'm finding it hard to get excited about the latter picks this year. Sometimes the obvious picks are the best picks and we've heard them all before but Parker, Christensen...Garlett. Been wrong before, hopefully I'm wrong again. I'm not sure now is the time to be safe with GWS and GCS potentially being fairly formidable opposition in the not too distant future

Im pretty content with this pick, he has grown on me, dont get me wrong I would have liked us to take a chance on Garlett with a rookie selection over Dell.

But this kid has proven himself over 6 players, is apparently hard as nails, has pace and knows how to kick.

Im more excited about this kid then our draft.

Give him a couple of years but I love players that go in hard.

As much as I wanted Garlett I would never use it against this kid.
He obviously worked harder and wanted it more, so he has my support.
Highlights and reports look exciting, can't wait for next year.

Absolutely astounded. Dodoro you dud how could you not risk Garlett? We will regret this.

Welcome Hams you are an absolute gun and I know you will be proven a worthy pick! :thumbsu:

There, that should just about cover all bases for future quoting purposes.

The player i wanted if we didnt pick Garlett was this kid. I guess the reason he went so late was because he doesnt look like an outstanding athlete by any means. Not sure of his teting but i dont think they would be great for speed and for someone who is light framed needs bulk to be able to play against the men and is only 177cm, doesnt have that X factor that is required. Either did Rory Sloane an many other really good players.

As someone that praised what was shown in the clips the one thing I left out for I recongised that the clips were not AFL standard matches but from lower levels. the lack of pressure did help give him time to look up and dispose, some of the passages were due to soft checking from his opponent but that doesn't take away the positive that he was willing on several occasions to go for goal from 50 out.

I too can point to the day I got nine kicks in a quarter, if only a bomber recruiter was watching I might have been in the 2000 premiership side

Yeah, look obviously highlights are a good guide for what a player can do- their X factor, if you will.

There are some intangibles they don't show as well- second, third and fourth efforts, do they keep running all day, do they have a tendency to go missing for large sections of games, and so on.

It's why recruiters and scouts will always have a much more valuable opinion on players than regular internet experts like us!

The three things I've liked reading about this kid are he is an endurance machine, hard as nails and can kick a footy. If he's got the footy smarts to go with it then speed won't be an issue. Ironically apart from the kicking he sounds like the polar opposite to Garlett.

If you could just entice him to grow about another 2 inches, he'd be a better chance IMHO.

To all you Essendon doubters ,i've been watching this kid (Will Hams) through all his juniors locally around here and IMO regardless of all other KPI's that the clubs like to have ,this kids courage on a footy field will astound you ,think Steve Silvagni ,or your own James Hird ,does not know the meaning of the word fear.
Out of interest, what club's he originally from?

We've taken a few Gippy boys recently... Ross from (I think) 'gul and that blonde kid from Leongatha...

I know exactly what you're saying.
We've been steady, safe, predictable... boring.

Guys that tick a lot of boxes, don't have any/many glaring faults, and add to the general quality of the list, but maybe a bit *too* generic (from the cheap seats)?

Rather than "that lightning fast kid" or "that kid who dominates inside" etc.

Garlett would have probably quit to go home in a couple of years anyway. Nah, Hams looks good. Get behind him guys!
