Agree. If Walsh wins it will be for the same reason players win other awards and AA selection: stats and groupthink over actual impact on games of football.

Of all the Rising Star eligible players, Stack is the best player having the best season. If he doesn't win it it will just be further evidence that the AFL doesn't have a clue about the game it runs (into the ground).
Who cares....Stacky has bigger awards to win! ;)

Stack slices thru Crows, 1-2 Dusty, silver service to Lynch

guarantee you'll find this looped on a screen at a sperm bank near you...

spot on, I really dont give a shit about winning the ward itself. I do like the recognition nominations give the players, our club and development coaching staff so get a bit dirty when some of our players unfairly get overlooked for players who have more or less been earmarked for most of the noms it suits the AFL and shifter Sheehan narrative

Sydney Stack’s high five with Eddie Betts makes people outraged for the sake of being outraged

Jon Ralph

No doubt Sydney Stack’s high five with Eddie Betts grabbed attention because we want our footballers to be dour, robotic creatures. Can we save the outrage for the truly outrageous, asks Jon Ralph.

Can we save the outrage for the truly outrageous?
As usual there has been the usual froth and bubble over Sydney’s Stack’s high five with Eddie Betts for one reason.

Because it was different.

No doubt it grabbed the attention because we want our footballers to be dour, robotic creatures who frown when they are sad and smile when they are happy.

But footballers - and the current generation - just aren’t built like that.

Sydney Stack certainly isn’t.

Just as Essendon’s Dyson Heppell smiled for a brief second when he comforted David Myers after his missed shot, Sydney did what Sydney does.

Which was high-five a football idol after a lead-up that gave context to exactly what it happened.

As Betts himself said, “Stack is a great young player but he keeps pushing you.

“Sydney kept saying all night, no special goals tonight brother.

“When I got it I said to him, told ya brother”.

The game was over as a contest and this brilliant young stud of a player had been schooled by the old veteran.

Stack flew for the contest, Betts stayed down and conjured yet another goal in a highlights reel as scintillating as anything Buddy Franklin or Adam Goodes have conjured.

The interaction was organic, immediate and brilliant.

Eddie Betts and Sydney Stack celebrate

If anyone thinks Stack isn’t a baller, or doesn’t give 100 per cent every single contest, they haven’t seen a second of his play this year.

When it comes time to go he goes like a raging bull, ironing out Jack Viney in one of this season’s iconic moments.

He should be every bit the Rising Star favourite alongside Carlton’s Sam Walsh.

A generation ago a throwback senior coach might asked Richmond players why they went over to Josh Jenkins to see if he was all right after his knee buckled behind him.

Why show any sympathy when you can instead put the foot to the throat?

Footy has changed.

So much so that Rory Sloane praised the Richmond players post-match for their care for a fallen player.

Players interact on social media, they become friends on International Rules tours and indigenous pre-season camps.

And above all at Richmond, they try to have fun while also play ruthless winning football.

Career-best work by the dopey self-loathing Richmond fan Ralph. Not a high bar, his previous best was not tripping over getting out of bed.

Apparently Gaddy Lyon had a crack
Without a shadow of a doubt, the most miserable, bitter, shiteating ****head in the AFL industry.

You cannot compare these other first year players with Stack. Sam Walsh could be the next Chris Judd or Robert Harvey and worthy of being considered the best of a normal group but Stack is like a Leigh Matthews, he can just do everything, including smashing opponents, great high marks, exhibiting brilliant and precise disposal, splitting packs, bringing down much bigger opponents in tackles, and it just goes on and on. These guys don't come along in every Rising Star group or even every 10 Rising Star groups. Walsh is like a Walter Hammond, would be the best of his era other than being contemporary to the greatest player ever, Bradman. If Stack plays out this season on his current trajectory and doesn't win the Rising Star the award is a farce. You only have to watch him turn disputed situations one after the other to his team's advantage and compare him properly to others to see that.

I wrote on this thread after Stack had played a few games I would be offering him a contract of $350-400k as soon as he is eligible for it, and why. People didn't seem to think that was the done thing, but if this bloke isn't worth that then nobody is. If I was any other club in the competition I would be trying to lure Stack away with a very healthy contract. And if I were Richmond I would be making sure that doesn't happen. I am pleased to see Stack is now receiving the recognition he warrants on this thread. Not that any of us doubted he was very good but I think it has taken people a while to get their heads around just how good he is.

If any remaining doubt exists post season in the minds of the Rising Star judges, they should just round up the leading contenders and kick a ball to them and see who comes out with it and who is left in his wake. If any of the others beat our bloke in a fair contest I would eat my hat, dandruff and all.

I believe you, i'm just waiting to see how Marlion turns out for us!

don't think I would swap Sydney for Walsh or rozee. he has got toughness, courage, skill and maturity on field that few 1st year players have. get another preseason into him and watch out. a great pick up by the club. he's the the late pick success story that helps teams maintain future strength. that episode last night was great. bett's in an interview said that stack kept saying that he wasn't going to kick a miracle goal on him tonight. then did that great smother and gave bett's "I told you". then betts kicks one from his pocket and they have a laugh. gees you couldn't question stacks competitiveness.

But you wouldn't think it watching him play! Last night there were moments where I thought, you're gone, but he somehow managed to out maneuver or out muscle his opponent! Imagine how much stronger he'll become!

Yep. Imagine Sydney with more strength, speed and endurance. He's such an obvious high quality mid. Hmmmmmmm

I can’t wait until he’s physically developed. There were also huge question marks on his tank pre-season according to Kiwi. He still has massive improvement in him.

I might be proven wrong but I don't think Stack will get a lot better physically, maybe a little, but to me he looks like he has got himself into his best condition by pushing himself beyond normal limits in the pre season. Where his improvement is more likely to come is just from the team learning to use him to better advantage and things of that nature.
