Everyone is society is held to a much higher standard but this guy can do what he pleases. It's mind blowing. I would be sacked on the spot if I rambled and carried myself like he does at work tomorrow.

Kamala uses a more pronounced southern accent or doesn't have every detail for her policies to help the country and many pundits go off on here.....yet Trump can talk about penises, boast about sexual assault, call Kamala mentally ill etc etc
But it’s so hard to fathom how the trumpers listen to this rubbish and still think - I’m voting for this guy. It’s not like an isolated example- all his speeches are like this. He’s out of his tree and they must be too.

Wonder if Harris or Walz will make a trip there 🤔
I suspect it's too late but it's a good question.

Neither Trump nor Harris has campaigned in Iowa following the conclusion of the party’s primaries and the last time a Democratic nominee won Iowa was Obama in 2012.

That will change now I think.

The breakdown of the polling numbers for Iowa tell a strong message that I think will play out across the country:

Lead pollster Ann Selzer says in the Des Moines Register (their daily paper) that “Age and gender are the two most dynamic factors that are explaining these numbers,” :

- Harris leads Trump among women independent voters by 28 points, 57% to 29%, and has a huge advantage in the over 65s leading Trump by 35 points, 63% to 28% among senior women. Her lead is significantly smaller among senior men, just narrowly beating Trump 47% to 45% according to the survey.

- Trump was ahead by 10 points among independent men voters, 47% to 37% according to the poll.

Not sure people are listening at these rallies - I mean why would you? He's babbling incoherently most of the time. These MAGA groupies just cheering or jeering when they hear the words they've heard before and understand. A mass gathering of drooling Pavlov's dogs.

But it's when you play back or read what he says in full and in context that you realise the nightmare that awaits if this guy gets anywhere near the White House again

Rent a crowd, paid to attend.

Hard to say what any of these polls really mean. The Des Moines poll was 28-31 Oct. The Emerson College poll (1-2 Nov) has Trump 54, Harris 45.
The Des Moines Register poll is creating a stir because of how historically accurate it has been. It's an Iowa-specific pollster that understands Iowans and knows how to weight accordingly, as opposed to the other pollsters who take polls across the US and don't necessarily weight their polls according to local issues. And clearly there is no herding bias with this one.

So the theory is that the Des Moines Register poll is picking up trends that the other polls aren't. Both in Iowa but more broadly across that region. Which would have big ramifications for where the race is really at.

But you're right, it's hard to get a good read on the polls generally. We'll all just have to wait and see.

Former BBC US political analyst and author, now based in Australia and whose views I trust suggests it might be significant...a new bellwether state perhaps.

It’s definitely thrown the proverbial ‘curveball’ out there, though those numbers in terms of the preference of women isn’t a surprise.

I did read earlier Walz has said he wants to get “down there” (to Iowa) in response to the poll, so hopefully they can do something.

Cause for optimism at least :)

Batshit ****ing crazy.

For some reason it made me think of the opening to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and thinking this is where a large part of the US population is now.

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.
