I think you're pretty spot on about the source of support for Trump within the US. And of course, it boils down to self interest.

I'd just like to hear some valid reasons as to why Australians posting on a football forum support Trump.
It’s would be a type of self interest - similar demographic type left behind by change to Australian society, probably compounded by cost of living and housing issues, wanting a simple solution similar to a trump that hurts those that aren’t them - immigrants, the “woke” city types, women etc

Also what is Trumps “peaceful” resolution in the Middle East?

But it’s so edgy to be a fan of Elon and Trump cos they own the libs.
In seriousness, I don't think Elon really gives a shit about MAGA ideology. IMO he has sided with Trump largely because of Vance and his links with Thiel and other tech bros. Elon first announced his endorsement for Trump a few days prior to the announcement of Trump's VP pick, I'm sure he had the heads up in advance of who the pick was. Even Zuck has praised Trump as being "badass", the pendulum has swung back towards the right for big tech.

The other key reason is Elon's frustration with regulation slowing down SpaceX's progress and Trump's offer to let him have a position where he can reduce that. A total conflict of interest for sure, but as long as it gets results and doesn't impact safety then go for gold I say. Who doesn't want to see man land on Mars? Having been a space nerd since age 5 I'd love to see some quicker progress, it's been 55 years since the moon landing.

See, you can identify it is pure self interest.

What can’t you do the same for Trump?

Suspect he is ok with rich immigrants who don’t take from government in welfare (just subsides for industry..)

It’s pure self interest with all of them of course, and it always was. Of course the GOP are always going to be better for rich tech bros from a financial and regulatory perspective.

Due to the sick system of donor/lobbyist money in the US, the Dems have to keep up being friendly with Wall Street, billionaires, AiPAC etc as well otherwise it would be like the 80s when they were being outspent all the time and losing.

"State of the Overseas Voter" ( Federal Voting Assistance Program)

"OUT OF THE 2.8 MILLION OVERSEAS CITIZENS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE, 3.4% VOTED IN 2022

Since there is no list of all U.S. citizens living abroad, FVAP compiles foreign and domestic data to estimate the number of voting-age U.S. citizens living in nearly 200 countries around the world. Not every individual in the overseas citizen population is 18 years of age or older and thus old enough to vote. Of the estimated 4.4 million overseas citizens in 2022, about 2.8 million were of voting age.

OF THE ESTIMATED 2.8 MILLION ELIGIBLE OVERSEAS VOTERS, MOST RESIDE IN CANADA AND THE UNITED KINGDOM"

"DNC Announces Innovative Six-Figure Investment in Democrats Abroad To Ensure Engagement of Key Voters Living Outside U.S.

August 12, 2024" (Democrats.org)

With under 100 days until Election Day and ahead of the Democratic National Convention, the DNC announced a significant six-figure investment in Democrats Abroad, for the first time ever in a Presidential cycle, helping fund their efforts to win the votes of approximately 9,000,000 Americans.

Interesting difference between the 2.8 million figure the Federal Voting Assistance Program states can vote from overseas and the 9 million figure the Democrat party claim can vote from overseas lol.

One of many things the "Right" in the USA and Europe completely lost control of over the recent decades; is self awareness of their own naivety.

Sadly - I think it’s trump 281 as well. As crap as he is, people in those close states equate the cost of living to the presidency (and immigration fears)
