Townsend ... up there with Aaron Keating, Scott Howell, Mario Bortolotto and fellow Richmond alumni Daryl Freame as the outright luckiest people in AFL history.
Maybe Freame was the luckiest, but Townsend is in the photo finish.
Somehow found himself in the semi-final team against Geelong in 1980 without having played a game all season.
Got in due to Rowlings and Cloke being injured for the semi and Landy getting suspended in the opening final v Carlton.
Then sat on the bench in the qualifying final until Sarah and Tempany got hurt and got even luckier when Dennis Collins 'allegedly' missed a session with the club sports psychologist during GF week.
Sometimes every single planet aligns.
Only managed two games in 1981 (including a one possession game in round 18) before being gone.
Yes I remember reading some story on Freame about 18 months ago and how he basically even admitted he was the luckiest man on Earth playing in a GF in such a team full of champions. As a 16 yo kid I could never work out afterwards whatever happened to him.

He went to WA in '82 and played about three seasons for Perth.
Actually played in an under-19s, reserves and senior premiership with us.
I tell you who was stiff - Ian Scrimshaw.
Played really well in both finals but found himself out of the GF team.
17 possessions and a goal in the semi-final.

Don't recall any of those blokes kicking 11 in two games in the lead up to finals, kicking important goals in each final, taking defenders away from our only kpf and then keeping the opposition's and arguably the competition's premier intercepting defender quiet in the GF as well as changing the whole vibe of game with a tackle on their best midfielder of that year.:$

I thought he got injured. I loved Scrimshaw and bc of my remote country living I didn’t know what happened to him.

HB it’s not the point WR is making. Location location with planets aligning my friend.

lmao 0 touches in the GF but even his stats leading up to it - htf did he even keep his spot? Be like us winning the flag this year with Bradtke in the fwd line.:$

Doubly lucky when you also consider Norf only won that year because the unbackable Bummers choked in the prelim.:$

As has been mentioned by others previously, none of us have any real clue as to what is being asked of players from week to week depending on the match up. I was just using Ross/McCluggage as an example of how a player who we as fans may have thought played well may get dropped, because they didn't meet the criteria set for them. At the same time, it could explain why players some think have been in poor form for most of the year remain in the side, when most of us are calling for them to be dropped.
And for most of the season, especially the early/mid part of the season when we were playing poorly and languishing around 14th on the ladder, those fans who thought player x or y could do with a spell in the VFL to find form were probably right. Traditionally that was what the VFL was often used for, and it usually works. But Hardwick's loyalty, which was both a strength and a weakness of his in my eyes, didn't allow it.

Some of those players now are finding form at the right time, albeit maybe to late, hopefully not.

Yeah to me "lucky" latecomers are like Mooney in the '99 GF not blokes who actually earnt their medals.
One thing about Mooney though was I bet they knew he was there. He and Max Rooke weren't much chop but they were physical beasts and split packs and brought the ball to ground, where Ablett, Bartel, Johnson, Chapman and co. were waiting. Would take Mooney right now at CHF for the same reason.

It still is used, but as I said the reasons why certain players are seemingly locked in to the 22 despite 'performances' are not known to many of us average Joe supporters. The majority of us usually look at statsand say 'Oh they had bugger all possessions so they're not in form and should be dropped', while ignoring the fact that most players in the team have specific roles they are asked to play and they will keep their spot as long as they are fulfilling that role.

That is what has been a strength of our side since 2017, system and structures that allow the team to flourish. When you read Steve Morris' report in the VFL, he'll talk up players like Green & Bradtke who might only have 10 disposals but what he emphasises is that they are understanding our systems and structures more and more.

Well they mustn’t be asking for much from about four players then ? That’s a cop out statement and contradicts why he still wasn’t sent back to the VFL after the Swans game to work on these deficiencies. Lol.
Its bs RT and I’m not buying any of it.
We've had this discussion previously and you ignored the fact then that we're a systems & structures based side that doesn't necessarily rely on players getting plenty of possessions and you continue to ignore it now.

The 4 players you constantly harp on about as being badly out of form have kept their spots because they perform the roles asked of them it's as simple as that. No conspiracy theory about coaches looking after favourites. The fact that we've had a change of coach and those same players remain in the side disproves that claim.

I recall he only got a run when the game was well over, so no he was as fortunate as ****

I get that but many of us also watch the game and who is influencing it and who is not, this has not changed in the 40+ years I've been watching footy, and the very good players go on to play season after season without controversy, and the average players who get questioned get found out or squeezed out by young players coming through.

I also get that we are 10th on the ladder and a loss to Melbourne will see us right back with the pack outside the 8. We cannot keep going back the the system that has had us finish 12th, 7th and somewhere between 7th and 14th this year.

Steve Morris always talks up his players, that is is job to give them the confidence to rise to the next level.

I haven't mentioned possessions and only mentioned asked you what they've brought to the team that Ross hadn't . You are referring to some theory about roles performed , yet they hadn't been performing their roles as we were at one stage as low as 15th on the ladder. You still have ignored why Ross wasn't sent back to the VFL to fix these imaginary deficiencies he wasn't doing in his role. You're making things up.

Has our midfield really improved since our 2020 Premiership side although we’ve picked up Taranto and Hopper? I will add our Wings also. I’m going to do a rating on both QUALITY and SPEED of the 2020 midfield to our current midfield using Cotchin 2020 as the point of reference and every player ranked around him. Cotchin gets ranked 100 for both QR and SR in 2020. Don’t panic as these are reference points a bit like the density of water is one and then every other element or compound is compared to it. Cotchin’s 2023 ratings will of course drop as he’s no longer the player of 2020. Every rating in both seasons is compared to Cotchin 2020. A good way to look at it is Prestia in 23 has the same SR as Cotchin was in 2020. It’s a bit in depth and I’m sorry I can’t simplify it any further.

2020 Midfield QR/SR

COTCHIN 100/100

PRESTIA 100/150

MARTIN 175/125

GRAHAM 60/75

EDWARDS 100/160

LAMBERT 90/140

BOLTON 150/180

Pickett 80/100

KMAC 80/120

Total 935/1150

2023 Midfield QR/SR

COTCHIN 70/75

PRESTIA 80/100

MARTIN 100/100

GRAHAM 50/65

TARANTO 100/100

HOPPER 80/80

BOLTON 150/180

ROSS 80/90

KMAC 70/100

Total 780/890

Analyzing the results there has actually been a drop of 155/260 in our side. Our list managers probably couldn’t predict such a rapid fall in both areas as they were quite drastic. They probably went with outcomes from 22, which would’ve been detrimental bc that side wasn’t a premiership side. They needed to base their projections on our game plan where we won our last premiership.

A QR difference and SR difference average tells us (155+260)/2 = 207.5 that we are still two quality midfielders short around the wings included. So, is it a myth TT and JH have helped us solve the mf problem? They actually have as without them we’d be four mids down. Our issue is none of the kids have really stepped up except for Ross. So looking at the comparisons above we need at least four guys to supersede some of the underperforming names above roughly by an average of 30/60 in both areas.

Yeah I'm talking about his '99 premiership when he was still a skinny kid at North. No doubt he earnt the medal at Geelong.

The problem is that footy has changed. All teams now are about systems and structures that allow the team as a whole to perform well enough to win enough games so that they can hopefully win a premiership. We've had players that many here have considered to be below average players, that have walked away with premiership medals, because they played their roles in the side that allowed the team to flourish and we've had players in the VFL side that many have considered to be much better options who never got the chance to win them because they didn't play the roles asked of them well enough and they were the ones who quickly got spat out the other side.

The one thing with Morris is that he doesn't just talk his players up, he also isn’t afraid to give them a clip when they're playing below the standard expected.

Okay, previous years then. He did play 221 games and has 3 premiership medals to his name, so he was no mug.
Exactly. If he was fortunate to be a member of the 1999 premiership side for North, that was not the case for Geelong's 2007 and '09 flag winning teams. He was definitely an important member of those teams. Somebody with his size and aggression would be perfect for us right now at CHF.

Sorry got my years wrong. Forgot about how young he was at North, should have done my homework with the date. I vaguely recall he a very low possession Geelong GF game, but he was really important in other ways.

Go tell that to Collingwood who right now play full on attacking football. Their system is not safety or about structures, its about giving the players the licence to attack, get the ball rebounding as fast as possible from their average back half to their average forward half with the leagues best by a fair way midfield in between. Fly has the players all on that page. Much like Hardwick in 2017, he let the players go and they responded in much the same way.

As far as our Premierships go, I have a different point of view to most in regard to the team ethics/structures thing. Yes Hardwich galvanised the playing group into playing a certain way, but without absolute champions, who rate amongst the best players I have seen at Richmond since I started going to the football in the late 60's/70's, I doubt we would have won those 3 Premierships.

Martin x 3 Normies and in the top 5 Richmond players of all time. Riewoldt in 2017 was incredible and ran the forward line on his own. Getting a star like Lynch to partner him enabled 2 more. Rance for me the greatest backman with Bourke I have seen. Cotchin the greatest captain and about the mentally toughest we have had. Under rated stars like Vlastuin, Grimes, Prestia a swag others made us a great team and with the help of role players gave us 3 flags, not the structures etc. Structures enabled us to win 3 flags, but without the stars we would never have gotten there, as has been evident by some of those same role players still being there, but the stars are not. New ones like Balta and Bolton are not there yet and you need a swag of them.

And because someone doesn't agree with you it doesn't mean you are correct and they are incorrect and it is like talking to a brick wall.
