Had 10 or 11 in the first half when he was on the wing a lot more. Teague left him deep forward most of the second half, hardly a moment on ball all of the 3rd and 4th.
 
I think SPS is our player with the most potential upside. He had 35 in one of his very few full games on-ball.

I am pretty desperate to hold onto him. I believe our best midfield rotation looks like (in order of most minutes to least)
Cripps, Walsh > Dow > Kennedy, SPS > Cuningham > Martin, Williams

Curnow to always play from the wing, even when tagging. Put our biggest body aside from Cripps as a defensive mid at the Center Bounce if someone is getting off the leash and Curnow can sprint in and take them with Walsh/Cuningham/SPS spreading to cover the wing.

SPS adds something we lack - silk. Cripps, Dow and Kennedy are great clearance players. Rather than them jamming it onto the boot, if they can dish to him as we do with Walsh then it allows for another deep, clean entrance inside 50.

Cyril was always low on possessions but could impact on the game…. If he can use his ability to find time and space and bring in other players with his disposal, especially on the angles, then he is invaluable.
I was never convinced seeing him on the HB line. Playing as a creative high half forward seems to me to be a natural position for him. He can also give the ball a fair roost as we saw on Sunday.

I don't see any Cyril Rioli in SPS

I definitely like him at HFF more than defence, it's a much better position for him. His good disposal is much more beneficial for us forward as opposed to the backline.

Surging up to mid table…… if you look at the sides that are there tigers eagles dockers giants- they are all good sides and could easily play finals. So no disgrace to put ourselves amongst that group- which with a bit of luck, might still happen given our draw.
We just need to keep winning.

and as it stands, like it is for a few of our recently maligned/out-of-favour younger players, their value to us (in potential?) is significantly greater than their value on the trade table.

We looked so much more dynamic and damaging earlier in the game with more mid/wing/hhf time going to Dow & SPS alongside Cripps, Walsh & Kennedy, compared to later on when Ed was shutting down Laird. I'm not actually sure the negating Laird was as good an outcome as it may sound, it might have been other factors too, but when SPS was getting higher up the ground he was really doing some great work in moving the ball, opening up the field, hitting targets.

...and hopefully we won't hear too much more BuT hE cAn'T kIcK mOre ThAn 12m!!!...

I didn’t say he is like Cyril, completely different players obviously. But his impact on the game can be Cyril like, even with a small number of possessions, which is what was being discussed.

I'm not certain he can. A lot of Cyrils impact came from his defensive pressure. SPS doesn't have much of that in the same way or the goalkicking nous that Cyril had. Cyril was also an explosive athlete, SPS isn't.

His 14 touches, while good, weren't exactly game turning.

I said the same thing earlier in the thread but I am coming around to Coops' perspective.

Given that, who is a more apt player comparison? Do we even have one?

I don't know if low possession games will be the norm for SPS, as his body of work to date is inconsistent.

I think it's safe to say (feel free to call out where you think I'm wrong):

He'll get around 20 possessions per game, and his disposals will mostly be kicks.

He will get back to defend but looks most effective moving the ball into our forward line from the middle of the ground.

He doesn't regularly do mercurial things, but he is lightning fast with his gather and disposal, and very clean even under pressure.

He cracks in hard with ferocious tackles, but is not what you'd call explosive.

He has proven to be a wet weather specialist.

Still no idea who I'd compare him to and maybe that's just fine - he's our Samo.

Mathematically he was covering the same portion of the ground with the same logic you just applied….when he was playing half back. He’s now half forward. When on half back he regularly ran down to the half forwsrd flank.

He can no more now be referred to as a mid given he’s olayign half forward than he (or Saad or Williams) could have been when playing half back. He doesn’t attend centre bounces. At midfield and defensive stoppages he was typically not engaged. That removes him from a lot of opportunities.

Point I’m really making: I think if he slotted into the mid 7 rotation his output would jump. People should rate his output as that compared to miss - because he’s not playing that role.

He doesn't have to attend stoppages to position himself through the midfield in general play.

Others have recounted seeing him line up in the midfield during the game and in the plays I'm referring to, he was running both ways between the arcs and linking up so playing like a midfielder.

My point is, it's a bit picky to have a shot at the title. Others know what I meant.

I think around 20 disposals a game is fine for him, given he's not the run - carry and give/receive 1-2s type of player, he'll generally run a short distance and hit up a target, not get multiple handballs up the field like Walsh does.

I've always thought he's similar to the older version of Burgoyne. Not so fast, 2 footed in kick, harder tackler than you'd expect, quick disposal, 20-odd disposals a game.

I'll also admit that I thought of Burgoyne and then tried to think of someone else, wondering to myself "why do all the comparison players I can think of end up being indigenous too!?"

Edit: and yep, 20 disposals is more than fine. Just wanted to establish the facts, or opinions we can all agree on :)

Burgoyne for his career averaged under 20 and he's one of the highest regarded players around. So 20 is enough so long as they're an impactful 20.

I know how you feel, I wondered to myself whether or not I was only considering it due to racial bias. But I can't think of anyone else as close a match really. I thought maybe Sam Mitchell, but he could accumulate like a madman. Maybe aside from being able to get 40 disposals they'd be similar, or even Simon Black on the outside. SB was excellent inside too which maybe SPS doesn't match but outside I can see it.
