5 Worst Successive Captains

100% right, fearless player and leader. Free would've become one of the great Richmond captains IMO. He played the entire game out after Brereton fractured his jaw in the first half at the MCG in 1994. Was the leading kickgetter in the competition at the time.

I had that Henwood bump on video for years but lost the tape; 'twas the same game as Michael Mitchell's seven-bounce goal of the year.

Didnt Mitchel also take mark of the year that game? Tambling reminds me so much of Mitchel:)

I was sitting right in front of that, it was huge.

Whatever happened to Mitchell?

Too many knocks to the head, neurologist told him he risked brain damage by continuing. Didn't receive a lot of publicity at the time as Richmond were shit (yes, then as well) and the AFL have never encouraged that sort of thing.

In fact he only played another 26 games after the MOTY and 9 after the GOTY.

Another plus for Vandenberg is that he was instrumental in implementing discipline at Hawthorn and set an example that the other players looked up to.
What???
Hawthorn are still ridiculously undisciplined. Have a look at the SF against the Kangas......Hawthorn blokes lost the plot and went the man. Hawthorn try to act tough by going the man instead of the ball.....perhaps now that Vanders is gone and they have a proper leader in Mitchell this trait will be gone from the team?

I never called Lloyd a poor player, just a poor leader.
What makes Lloyd a poor leader? Because he wont go around hitting people?? Lloyd takes strong marks, kicks important goals.....it is hard to continually inspire a team from FF but Lloyd does a decent job.

But after all that i agree with the opening post, they would have to be the worst 5 consecutive captains of recent time.

Vandenberg was the biggest pretender seen on an AFL field. What was the example that he set? Being a coward and attacking a player in a brawl who was being held down by two other hawthorn players? He is a soft, gutless player that didnt lead by example at all. What is this discipline you refer too? Getting into brawls?
You call Lloyd a poor leader but why is that? What has he shown that makes him a poor leader? Leadership qualities are things like stepping up when the team needs you and getting the best out of your players etc. What are your reasons for calling Lloyd a poor player? You know you are talking trash with nothing that shows Lloyd is a poor leader at Essendon.

If Lloyd was a good leader, then more Essendon players would follow his example and have their shorts up around their ribcages.

QED.
lol well fortunately players at the Bombers have realised how ludicrous it is to play a game of footy with your shorts stuck up your a** crack. Perhaps that is why he wasnt kicking as straight this year compared to past years. Because his shorts were too low and hence his head wasnt looking as straight as usual with the usual wedgie stuck up his a**;):D.
BTW what is QED?

2004 (year before Vanders' Captaincy) 4 wins.
2005 (1st year with Vanders as Captain) 5 wins/25% improvement.
2006 (2nd year with Vanders as Captain) 9 wins/80% improvement .
2007 (3rd year with Vanders as Captain) 14 wins/56% improvement (including finals).

In each year of Vanders' Captaincy, the Hawks have improved.

Take a look at your own captain first before mocking another. Hird will not be there to help highpants out.

Yeh

the more he got injured the better they played.

Hog was a Coleman medalist
Free was as tough as they come, played with a broken jaw after that snipa Dermie king hit him.
Knights was a class player, who devoted himself to a club that didn't deserve him
Campbell, I agree
Johnson, he has struggled with form but leads by example off the feild as a good captain should, Premiership player X2.

Frankston Rover you are a joke.

Freo's captains 1995-2001

Ben Allan
Peter Mann
Chris Bond
Adrian Fletcher
Shaun McManus

Ahh, we have a new contender. :thumbsu:

Well done, Ron.

No, YOU are the JOKE.

1. Jeff Hogg NEVER WON a Coleman Medal.
2. Knights was never a 'class' player. He was an in and under, blue collar midfielder.
3. Johnson, after being carried by Adelaide to two premierships, is a dud. What has he done at Richmond?

Get your facts right before you make yourself look stupid. :thumbsu:
