The club is smart with 1 year deals for older players. If their form is good they will be best 22, and if they are best 22 they are unlikely to leave for a longer deal, as not many trades poach guys 30+ on long deals.

I'm sure it comes under the understanding that if form warrants it they will extended again and so forth. Gives the club important flexibility though in list management.

1 year deals allows us to pay him more. Good for him.

Pay Me GIF

Personally i think its crazy not to give him 2 years

We gave Tarrant 2 years and no reason not to for Pickett

Eagles are going to become a sh!t show in 12 months time and will have cap space to spare and will be looking at experience to keep them in games and could throw a $500k deal at Marlion for 2 years in 12 months time
  • Go Home factor
  • 2 years on the table at his age will be tempting

I would have tied him up for 2 years at $400k a year

West Coast will be looking for kids. No chance we lose #50 to them. Freo are a bigger risk.

At his age, a 2 year contract is risky (e.g. Higgins to Geelong at age 32). You can end up with "first 22" money clogging up your salary cap long after a player has been dropped due to injury / form / desire. That means clubs offer less money per year if they are forced into a long term deal. Assuming Marlion wants to maximise his money, he's better off taking rolling one year deals for as long as he can.

Believe me, we aren't going to let him go. We'll always pay him market rate. We want those boys. He'll play 100 games for Richmond, barring a serious injury.

Great player is #50. Counted on to do:

Hard yard
The tough work
Grunt jobs
Never checking out

Team mates walk a bit taller when he is in the field. Always capable of a bit of spectacular to delight the supporter.

Even though this song gets a run at Port, for me this speaks of Marlion.

With Marlion we know what we get and his standard is AFL level
he deserves 2 years why not just give it to him and be done with it rather than yearly contracts makes no sense to me

He may not of wanted it and preferred the 1 year to leave his own options open

So a worst we'd hypothetically lose a guy who is 32 years old for the 2024 season. Hardly a concern.

By that stage you've got another two drafts, trade periods, plus development of all the current young guys on the list to fill the role. He's a good player but hardly one to protect with a contract as someone you can't replace.

I'd be a lot more worried for the team if in 2 years time we don't have a better option than him.

I was trying to think of another player that is the equivalent type as marlon in the afl

They're by no means identical, but Jiath has a lot of similar attributes.

Was hoping to see the Hawks play him on a wing in Marlion's role this year (as they briefly toyed with last season), unfortunately he's either played back or been unfit/injured all year.

This guy doesn’t get enough credit.

Last year in my opinion would’ve been leading our bnf up until round 10 at least.

Was very good last Thursday night off a very limited pre season.

Defensively brilliant. Offensively creative and intelligent. Physical, tough, humble…

If there were 22 marlions each week we’d be unbeatable.
