So we can conclude that Collingwood's 'core' support is about 30-35k.
Or on the same level as Essendon, Richmond, Carlton, West Coast and Adelaide.

No. We don't have access to the whole stadium's seating for a start, and we wouldn't even fit 35K of our supporters in against Victorian teams there. As a consequence, a lot of our supporters just don't go to Etihad. We only play there 4 times a year. The MCG is a different scenario.

Actually in WA we care about as much about Collingwood as you care for West Coast.

Which is shit all.

Essendon is the most important Victorian team here.
Yeh, understand the WCE/Essendon thing. Shit all is an exaggeration though. You only have 1 local rival and of all the Melbourne clubs, the biggest is near the top of who'd fill a bigger stadium. It's a bit acedemic though because you basically sell out your stadium before a ball is bounced.
A 45k crowd at the MCG wouldn't affect your core support.
Core support is the number of supporters who attend week in week out regardless of opposition or venue (unless of course the match is interstate).
There is no such thing but if you equate your definition of core support to the worst crowd you could attract then you can have that definition all to yourself. I can't understand how you would conclude core support to be anything other than 45k if 45k turned up because the game was next week at the G.

Good for you. We've got the most members and make the most money out of every footy club in our state, too. Gold stars all round.

Three cheers for the biggest fish in the small pond.
small pond? cmonson.
what does that make WA? :D

West Coast crowds/membership figures are impressive, but the fact is that they are one of only two clubs (and were the sole AFL club for a significant period) in a footy mad state.

Collingwood compete directly with 9 other Victorian clubs for local support hence why our crowd/membership figures are of considerable distinction. The upside of having to directly compete with these other clubs for support is that we enjoy the benefit of being able to have our home games at the best football stadium in the country, capable of holding 100,000 (as opposed to the small derelict stadium you've been whinging about itt), the benefit of being able to have 18 games in Melbourne (as opposed to 12), the benefit of having numerous blockbuster matches and genuine historical rivalries (as opposed to 1) and the benefit of being a club in the home state of Australian Rules Football.

Being the biggest club in the home state of Australian Rules Football? Why yes, it IS good to be king. :)

Because core support is core support.
It's like how NSW labour managed to attract 23% of the primary vote on Saturday.
Because the labour party (and the liberal party) has about that much core vote who will always no matter what, vote for the same party.

A core supporter will attend every single match that they can reasonably attend. For them supporting their club is not a pasttime but one of the most important things in their lives.

35k is a very large core support for a 9 team town and is one of the biggest of any sporting team in Australia (if not the biggest).
It is however, despite how much some 12-13 year old Collingwood fans on BF might claim, not comparable to Manchester United or Barcelona.

That's not really core support then is it?

If we decide to play our next home game at McGilvray Oval with 100,000 standing and watching on for free can we conclude that our core support is 100,000?
There is a million miles between moving the game a few km and a week to your scenario and in any event I don't know that you'd get 100k so it is just silly.
You could consider the moon to be made of cheese, but it doesn't make it so.
That's because it isn't but the reality is Collingwodo v Carlton round 3 will be heavily capacity constrained.
If Subiaco held 100,000 and West Coast played Freo on a public holiday then you could argue that it would be full, too.
Sure, and I've said that often enough. How is that relevant to Collingwood's support? I don't care how big your's is, we are talking about mine.
Some people are so easily phased by marketing spin.

I'd happily go and watch Collingwood in 2011 because they have a very good side. If people would rather watch an ordinary Collingwood (and they've been ordinary a fair bit under the Eddie reign) than a talented Kangaroos, Dogs or Demons side because 'it's Collingwood' then that's sad for them and a win for the coffers of Collingwood/the AFL.
So you believe the differential in club A v club as opposed to club A v Collingwood is all Collingwood supporters yet you want to have a go at Collingwood's core support.
We're fine, but thanks for the concern. We'll leave needing a manipulated fixture to thrive/survive to your state.
Yes, I know WCE are fine. Never said any different. Not sure why you have your defence up about it. As for the draw, as I have said countless times, I would much prefer a random or rolling draw and match schedule and eat what you kill but the reality is that will kill the clubs whose supporters whinge the most and that is why those clubs themselves do not ask for it. They don't even ask for it on a shared revenue basis.

TT there is nothing worse than being a Legends member and getting shoved all the way up on level 3 home and away at Shitihad !
so Fing true mate

i pay almost 1000 for my membership and im sitting on level 3 12 rows back?? like seriously what the F

Because core support is core support.
Of course it is. It isn't however the lowest ebb.

It is entirely possibly that core supporters deserted the party due to leadership/policy/performance issues as well so 23% might be baseline but that is not necessarily core and in any event, you can't measure a clubs support on a single game any mroe than you can conclude essendon will play out the season undefeated based on week 1 and being on top of the ladder.

I couldn't care less about those teams or your inappropriate interpretation of analogies used in such claims. Calling Collingwood the MU of AFL is not calling them MU notwithstanding the fact that the EPL has global reach that no AFL club could compare with under any scenario.

Really? I love those seats. At Etihad we ALWAYS sit on Level 3 Aisle 36 towards the very back. Love it there.

Ditto for MCG. Q17 Waaaay up the back by choice. Best view in the house for us.

edit: I have to give kudos to all the trolls for managing to be able to continue baiting us for this long. Nice work. Seriously. Credit where credit is due.

Anyway, enjoy holding us up for a few more seasons... We'll try not to put on too much more weight, but these premiership cups are heavy. We'd let you hold one, but...you know.

Q is a great view if you want to watch ants run around. Level 2 (N) is the most sort after location for a reason.

My MCG seats are magnificent, my Etihad seats are rubbish.

Can't wait til the season really starts - Round 3 at the G against Carlton. For now it still feels like the NAB Cup.

Just thought I'd drop in and say hi.
Collingwood are the reigning premiers, and the most supported sporting club in Australia.
Thanks for your time and we look forward to winning the 2011 Premiership.

Actually, Fremantle do

In all fairness, that was a 3 game ticket that was sold late last year that won't be offered again this year (mainly due to there being no available seats). It also wasn't technically a membership - it wasn't counted in any tally and it gave no access to finals tickets. A bit like Sydney's 3 game superpass that isn't counted in their membership tally.

The closest membership we have to a 3 gamer is a country membership which gives you access to either 5 or 6 games - the 5 gamer having the more marketable games like the derby. The cheapest country membership is $208, and it's inclusive of full club membership (i.e the equivalent of GA membership in Melbourne). So it's hardly a cheap way to pad out numbers.
