Simpson is a bit of an enigma to me.

He is probably the most understated captain in the AFL - quiet and unassuming. Great ball getter and statistically very strong. Seems very well rspected as a leader although he doesn't seem to have those qualities publicly - not a dynamic "follow me to war" person. But club folk I speak to are 100% supportive of Simmo and see him as a quality captain and club leader - I bow to their judgement.
However I just cannot overcome his poor disposal. Game after game he lets himself down with poor kicking and handball. it just irks me that your captain can lack those basic skills. I suppose when you have a set against a player for a particular weakness any example of that stands out like knackers on a dog so maybe I just see the bad side and overlook the good.

Bullseye! But the good is that no matter how great your skills are, if you don't get the ball you can't use them. Simpson can seriously get the ball!(just handball to Wells, Harvey etc.)

Agree with this. Simpson's courage and ability cannot be questioned, but his disposal can be exremely frustrating, especially when he turns the ball over and a scoring opportunity is lost, or given to the opposition.

North must win, says Simpson

April 08, 2008 12:00am

NORTH Melbourne's match against Melbourne on Saturday is an absolute must win, according to Roos veteran midfielder Adam Simpson.
“If we lose this we’re in a bit of strife,” he said today.

“With Hawthorn we tried to close the game down a bit too early. We thought we had the legs but to their credit they were too good. And Melbourne are showing some good signs so it’s going to be a bit of a battle.”

Improving their running game will be a challenge for the Kangaroos.

Simpson said he doesn’t think having a high number of interchange rotations will make the difference.

“You used to play every minute of every game but now you’re lucky to play 80 per cent,” he said.
“But it doesn’t really seem to change how you play.”

The star midfielder also laughed off concerns about ‘squirrel grabbing’, following Jason Akermanis’ complaint against Robert Harvey on the weekend.

“I’ve never been grabbed there before. I don’t think it happens too often and if it does I’m sure it’s accidental,” he said.

Why on earth would you try to close down the game if you thought you had the legs (particularly when they had two injured players who could not come back on)?

FFS!!!

This is such a defeatist attitude.

Morale-sapping, spineless sh*t.

May as well hang a sign that says "Here we are, please, run all over us. We'll just ignore team mates running hard to make space and just chip it 15 metres until the opposition forces a contest and a turnover and ....woops"

To win we need to replace some of our 'in and under' midfielders with some pace to run the lines.

I will be disappointed if Watt, Brown, Power, Swallow and Harding aren't all under the microscope this week prior to team selection.

Hopefully Sinclair and Smith are ready to come back to give us some run off half-back, and Urquart, Grima or Ross come under consideration to come into the team.

My concern is that if there are no changes, and we beat Melbourne, Dean will believe we can go further with those named above!

Settle down everyone.

Settle down.

I am happy to hear Simmo's comments on Melbourne.

Would much rather that mindset that puts some pressure on themselves to perform rather than go in thinking the game is in the bag and under estimate the Dees. Quality teams perform under pressure.

His comments on the Hawks game are pretty much what most of the fans thought anyway. Hopefully the team will learn from it.

As long as Simmo didn't say, "We are not under-estimating Melbourne this week." Because as soon as a player says that, you know they are & the chance of winning is zero.

Or 'we want to regain the respect of the football community.'

Watch the video on the Hun website. He does say it and its got me worried. Was guna post the same thing in another thread ....

We didn't run out of legs in the finals, we gave up once we were down in the second quarter:

Geelong 3.5 10.10 16.16 23.18 (156)
Kangaroos 3.0 4.1 6.1 8.2 (50)

Port Adel 6.0 9.3 17.10 20.13 (133)
Kangaroos 3.2 3.7 4.10 5.16 (46)

How could we not have any legs after the half time break?

Why is it that other teams can put teams away by 50+ points and still have legs, but we try to close down the game when its barely over and either lose or win by a paltry margin?
Thats why we always have a bad percentage.

The worst thing the team could do is change their style of play when they've got all the momentum - it just kills it.

Tell us something we don't know.

Anyway can anyone tell me why was Simpson asked about the squirrel grip incident in this article?

Because the journos have access to 22 players and 3 assistant coaches, and can't risk going back to their offices with an empty notebook. So the topics of the day get discussed while they have the players' attention. Nothing sinister I reckon.

It just seemed odd and off topic!

He knows how to take the interview, he just doesn't know how to hold the interview...
