Ihle (Essendon): Sparrow is trying to burst through the front-on tackle. The Tribunal should ask: Who is the prime mover in the direction of Sparrow tipping forward? In my submission, it is Sparrow trying to free himself of Merrett's grip.
Not a great submission, Sparrow is trying to back out of the tackle from what I saw.

Ihle (Essendon): We're not disputing Sparrow's head made contact with the turf ... what we're saying is that this was not a dangerous tackle because it was not unreasonable in the circumstances.
Again, weird submission.

First contact is clearly landing on Merretts body. Contact with the ground was secondary

Will we though, and if so, is that a bad thing?

Players are given far more time to dispose of the ball these days. It's pretty quickly clear when a player is unlikely to slip a tackle, why give them more time to not slip the tackle which escalates the situation because the tackler feels like they need to bring the player to ground just in case. If they want to limit the opportunities for dangerous tackles, then calling a ball up and quickly throwing it up is likely going to be better than waiting around for them to either get dumped or still have to do a ball up.
You may just be thinking about the times the end result is currently a ball up. Easy to say in hindsight that blowing the whistle earlier was a good idea.

I reckon the early whistle earlier will also catch a lot of instances where the ball was about to spill, even though it seemed unlikely.

I honestly don't think we see the ball spill all that often, once it's under a pack or a player is properly held then it rarely pops out. Which means we're holding up the game to watch players do... nothing.

I'd rather a quicker ball up call, followed by a quicker actual ball thrown up with the whole ruck nomination thing scrapped.

gets dropped a lot, which used to be incorrect disposal
