Player Watch #7: Zane Duursma - out for 2024, undergoing shoulder surgery

Zane's less than stellar performance on Sunday may be simply down to him being played out of position.

He actually spent more time on the wing than forward and looked lost to me at times.

Did he play on the wing as a junior?

It's hugely underrated as a specialist position the wing and plonking him there as he's trying to make his way in the game is not ideal imo.

Poor kid is playing one of the hardest positions on the ground in one of the worst teams in history as a skinny 18 year old.

A lot of posts lamenting the fact that we lost out on Harley Reid but when this kid's had a couple of pre-seasons under his belt and put on some muscle, he'll be the x-factor match winner we're looking for.
95% of this board would have left this experiment with only one marshmallow in their belly.

* me dead, some of you need a lie down haha

He's an 18 year old first year player in a really s**t team, so let's give him a few more weeks before delisting him.
My only concern is he strikes me as that personality type who would love to play for one of the big 4 etc.

[She says this not knowing him at all!] #assumptions

I hope he's the type who would love to play for one of the bottom 4

Yep Harley has the biceps of an Elliot Yeoh right now so he's more physically able to break tackles.
And Reid is awesome to watch but he's ready made so it's too early to compare.

On Sunday, we played Eddie Ford closer to goal and Zane was running the wings and half back, to create an option when we were kicking the ball in after a point.

Eddie Ford had some terrific games on the wing last year.

But we are now playing him mostly forward.

Why wouldn't Clarko reverse the roles and let Zane play predominately forward and let Eddie play up the ground?

Eddie has more experience and is physically ready to play the role.

Zane just isnt physically ready to play that role yet.

Confusing...

Eddie has good goal sense and doesn't need much to find them I assume is the reason. I agree though, he'd do good swapping with Duursma. We drafted this kid to kick goals, let's see what he can do.

Agree, but Zane is getting pushed around and rag dolled in marking contests around the ground.

It cant be doing his confidence any good.

He just doesnt have the body to play that role yet.

Meanwhile, Eddie was very good on the wing last year.

I wish I had the footage of Duursma congratulating Mark O’Connor for kicking a goal on him mid game.

Absolutely hated seeing it and hope the coaches pointed it out to him.

At a minimum have pride in what you do and be hard to play on.

In my eyes it look like someone that didn’t care and thought it was one giant big laugh.

Ford and Scott on the wings - get back to basics Clarko!

And Phillips played some terrific footy in the middle last year.

The last game he played last year, he earnt brownlow votes.

Put him back in there and leave him there.

If we end up with everyone back in their best positions and see on-field improvement for it I'll be more than a bit frustrated lol

Delist? Execute?

Simply because Eddie's job was to make James Sicily accountable. You couldn't put that expectation on Duursma.

Well let’s not execute just yet, but my point was it’s not a good look.

I don’t remember too many successful footballers patting their opponent on the back and congratulating them after they have just made you look second rate.

I’m not asking for him to react like a rabid dog about it, but at least show that getting beaten is not a joke and something to be happy about. All that told me was the kid has no pride in his performance and doesn’t really give a shit.

But the career is 6 games old, so let’s hope it was an aberration (Bradism) and we don’t see it happen regularly.

I get what you're saying, it wasn't great from an optics point of view but I think Zane was actually laughing more at the Irish song playing moreso than congratulating him on kicking a goal.

Yeah that’s what I thought as well. Also reckon deep down Zane believes he will get his chance to make that bloke looks stupid in years to come.

When the forward half may as well not exist for us due to our inability to score, the wing becomes the HF line.
